It’s easy to figure out who he is, but it’s far more important to respect his desire for semi-anonymity.

I don’t much care for his online persona most of the time, but can’t imagine anything that he’s said that would make me want to ‘out’ him…….

But for reference, he raced at least 2 Saddleback Nationals, and finished what I’d consider pretty damn well. So while his silly season and ‘Industrie’ rumors are sometimes pretty whack, I’d say that he had a very personal experience with Suicide Mountain…..!

I do not believe an industrial complex was constructed on this site. pretty sure it is undeveloped to this day

My memory is vague between saddle back and Indian dunes but I do remember a water truck rolled and people were seriously injured (or worse)
I Believe it was the AME promoter that rolled his tractor at the dunes and killed him self, same thing that happened to the promoter at OCIR. I showed up that Thursday night only to be turned away with a horrible story about a promoter that I really liked a lot being killed….Steve Crosby. A couple incidences closed Saddleback. I was at the track for the final one…. I was waiting on the start line for the first motor to take off, as the pros were always the first race immediately after practice for Saturday Saddleback races. we sat there waiting and waiting…..and waiting. Finally either Jim Beltnic or Terry Wytal (< sp ?) came over to the start line and instead of giving us the swirly finger “fire-em-up” sign, he gave us the cut throat “shut-em-down” sign. He told us there was an accident with the water truck near the start line and that the track was flooded. The races have been canceled for the day. Later we found out the water truck driver was killed. A fucking awful time in MX! OCIR closed, then Saddleback, then the Dunes…..all within in year!….at least Carlsbad will be there forever….right?!Dry

Well don't know if it's easy to find out who Uptite is as most people DON'T know and I just recently discovered who.

But I havta wonder regarding the class he raced if he ever CLEARED SUICIDE MOUNTAIN, cuz that's what had me wondering as he stated "it wasn't that hard" 😳

Very sad times in SoCal MX for sure and the closing of Indian dunes was the final nail in the coffin. I was going to go ahead and move with the company to Arizona as I was still on the fence about it.

My dream was to be able to ride out of my garage like I use to in my youth and make tracks in the desert.

While I lived that dream for a number of years and there were great tracks to race now with all the Californian's also moving here 33 years later most tracks have closed it's like history repeats itself. Dry

I use to test for a team, one weekday during testing I did it, not out of the turn, but by making a run at it. I did it that day and so did two others that were on the factory team.

There was a jump that was just like another jump we use to do in the hills near my house.

I was a SoCal guy, but I was never a SoCal guy, I live a bit inland. I can still ride right out of my door and it’s great.

I use to stay with a guy who lived in Simi Valley, there was 8 or 9 tracks in the hills within a 10 minute drive of his house that are all housing tracts now, sad.

Oh yes I do remember you said you did it by getting a run at it but that makes it a totally different jump versus a tight right hand corner right at the bottom.

But that said there still is no way way I would even think about it either way. Shocked

I rode a track up there on a hillside that Eric Kehoe use to ride on.
It was epic, off cambers steep hills and there was a road crossing jump, natural terrain at its finest. 👍

All of those tracks were basically a bike ride away in my backyard growing up. Watched all of you guys ride when I was a kid and it was awesome.

I know that one of the water truck deaths was Saddleback. The line was backed up way down the road to get in. We still raced that day , but there was a very somber vibe that day. Not sure about Dunes , but I know there were at least 2 incidents where riders hit the tractor. I was involved in one of the crashes , but did not hit the tractor. My friend did. As you old guys like me remember , they would water the track without shutting it down , and on Saturday afternoon they ripped the track for the Sunday races. They would begin at the start straight , so you knew they were there and you had to be aware of them on the track. This incident happened on the blind jump at the far end of the International track.

Another great picture from Vic, looks like the GOAT bought the Farm!!! Woohoo

Just found this on the interwebs gives a good perspective of Suicide Mountain in the background before it was ever considered a new section of track.

Keep in mind there was a tight right hand corner at the bottom is what made it REALLY challenging for the Pros.

Nothing is there. I drive by often. You can still make out most things there. Kinda heart breaking

Didn't know Jimmy hated those bikes but on those machines is where Donny earned the name "Holeshot Hansen".

I'll never forget the day at Indian Dunes and I was on the next gate at the Infamous Shadow Glen track behind him. He had such a jump on the pack wheeling down the start slapping the clutch lever like a newborn! Woohoo

One of those things you never forget.

Looks like Juan Benavidez was Holley's teammate on Kolbe Can-Am's.
I don't remember that, just on the Factory bike.

Is that a 1976 Yamaha YZ 80 with Mono Shock? If so does anybody know the story behind that bike. Just curious.

No. I believe that’s a 125. My friend had the last yz80 that had 2 shocks, 1977. The 80 didn’t get a monoshock till 1978. That was the bike that I caught the MX virus on.

That’s what I originally thought, too, but the tank says ‘80’ and the kick starter is also from an 80.

100% not a 76 YZ125.

Looks like a YZ80 with shitload of suspension

here's a stock one for comparo... the tank looks way closer to the exhaust on that one compared to the stocker too. IDK WTF that is.......suspension looks a lot like 76 YZ100

Above posts... yes does look like 1976 100cc or 1976 125cc cantilever but as Sully says has 80 stamped on tank and also the 80cc Kick starter- would imagine is a mix of a 1976 80cc put with 1976 100cc or 125cc cantilever suspension. Cool bike for the time- talk about trick for that time.

Who was the family in the pics and riders of these bikes I wonder?
They may have been quite good to have a bike like this and the effort it took to make it back in 1976 thereabouts.

Reckon SLAPAHO is correct... is prob a mix of 1976 100cc cantilever and 80cc engine.

Edit- just remembered something similar here- abit later though- was a very fast kid from South London area who rode for Team Suzuki in like the early 1980's- his Dad modded a '81 125X Full Floater with early pre- production frame(would have been one of the first to arrive here) to house a tricked out RM100 aircooled motor- the kid was quick- did the Nationals and was up there with the fastest at the time.

Funny back in the earlier years only a few people seemed to mod the bikes like this- think nowdays more people do it

I'm wondering if it might not be a Dave Miller/Miller Mano creation?

Just found this on the interwebs gives a good perspective of Suicide Mountain in the background before it was ever considered a new section of track.

Keep in mind there was a tight right hand corner at the bottom is what made it REALLY challenging for the Pros.

Is that a 1976 Yamaha YZ 80 with Mono Shock? If so does anybody know the story behind that bike. Just curious.

Sure looks like it. I'd be curious to know about it too.
Ok boys I had some time to track down where I plagiarized the photo from.
I contacted him and hopefully he will reply with the info.

He was not from SoCal and was on a vacation to Disneyland and Saddleback with his buddies.

Also found a few more pictures. Smile

Ok guys the story on that bike, it is a 1976 YZ80, it was my buddy Brads and his dad was a master fabricator in those days and somehow made a Mono shock system for it but i can not quite remember the details on how or what he used for a shock and mounting/swingarm but it was pretty amazing for that time, he also used to make us differnt silencers for our exhaust system that were pretty trick, plus that is my photo with my awesome and cool mom sitting on the trailer in 1977, i posted more on facebook site Saddleback Moto Lives, dig this thread, thanks.
