Why would you care if people wear or stop wearing a piece of safety equipment?

And OP before you claim you don't care.. You started a thread out of the blue AND you added a snarky comment!

It's weird man!

I’m not using my Atlas if anyone is looking for one.
I won’t be riding anymore for a while

Why do people need to start threads to validate their decision to not wear a neck brace?

Jemcee, I think you and Mav have a unique position on these debates and discussions. What do you think about the braces?

Ah yeah well put it this way.. I wish I was wearing one so I could know for sure if it would've helped me or not!
(They came out later that year or the next)

I understand people not wearing one for whatever reason they have.. I don't understand the smirking snarky comments from those that think they know better, cause I can almost guarantee they don't

Edit: Also I'd give any of anti group about 3 hours of being a quadriplegic before they started looking into buying one

Neck braces were the original vax/anti-vax argument.

I have only worn a OG leatt neck brace, didn't like that one and haven't tried anything since. I wouldn't mind giving the new Atlas brace a go though

That’s what I assumed! Thanks for sharing. I think your answer is exactly why I wear one.

There are no neck braces that will protect from you from a full axial impact nor any that will claim to. These are the impacts are will typically cause paralysis. You can argue if these braces prevent other types of neck injuries but there is no argument regarding a full axial crash.

I've heard there's a few studies that show they actually raise your risk for spinal injuries. Im no scientist or doctor that's just what ive heard. I still used mine all the way up until i quit riding and i would probably still use it if i was still racing.

Ryno would say wearing a neck brace is dressing to cause a crash.

Just like he'd say for knee braces. How'd that go in Keefers real world experiment?

When I'm at the races and see a guy wreck and get carted off in the mule on a backboard and neck collar I guess I find myself thinking "I hope he was wearing a neck brace" Not "Oh I bet he crashed from wearing a neck brace"

Backwards logic. That’s like saying Sipes’ crash was from his neck brace. “If he could of unlocked his hips better his bike wouldn’t of flamed out”

I'd like to try a modern-day Atlas, just to see. The 1st-gen Leatt made a great case example for Ryno's opinion, i.e., that they cause crashes. I rode in it for 2 laps and immediately chucked the thing. It was not a matter if IF, but WHEN that thing was going to make me wad up. I understand the newer Atlas braces are much lower to the body; that may prevent incidental helmet contact, which was my major gripe with the Leatt.

I bought a Leatt GPXII around 2010 or so. It is bulky and you have to get use to it.
I ditched it this year for a Leatt GPX 6.5 Carbon and hardly notice it's on. Full body chest protector too; dress for the crash...

I stopped wearing one after I rode without it for a day (after a buddy was arguing with me that they do no good) and realized how uncomfortable my riding was with one. It was causing a very large amount of restriction in my head movement. I'm not anti neck brace for everyone, but it isn't for me. I have a very very short neck so there's almost no configuration that would be comfortable for me, except maybe that new Atlas Vision which I haven't tried yet

I have been using the Vision brace for the last 3 months and the air for the last 4 or so years.

The Vision is a big improvement in mobility vs the Air but of course only protects for compression injuries. The one person I know that has a spinal cord injury was from a compression, down hill mountain biking so I guess that helps me sleep at night. I would recommend trying one.

I don’t know if they are going away or not, but Leatt is looking for an outside sales guy.

I bet that job has more to do with new 'colorways' than it does neck braces.

I've been in the Leatt brace most of my career, won't ride without it. I've put it to the test multiple times, and I believe it has saved my neck multiple times. The most recent being my crash at Red Bull Imagination. I felt like it was almost impossible to not get hurt falling from that high up to flat. Feet and ankles got spared because the bike hit me from behind and took away some downward velocity. My head and neck hurt afterward, so I looked at my helmet and neck brace. My TLD helmet was broken all the way through. Shell, foam, everything. I didn't have a concussion, so the helmet did its job. My Leatt neck brace was broken also, which meant it took a heck of an impact. An impact that could have been absorbed by my neck instead. My old neck isn't strong enough for that. Long story short, I'll always wear my neck brace. It doesn't negatively affect my riding and it provides protection. Easy decision.

Dude, this is awesome, thank you for coming on here and explaining your experience. That crash was freaking nuts, so glad you made it out alright. That's all the information I'd need to hear to sway me in the direction of protection.

I always wore a neck brace pre-thoracic fusion (not mx related) and now that that is an area of concern I can't decide if a neck brace is more protection or danger, being a lot of the force could be directed to the thoracic area of my back.

It never bothered me to wear one in the past so I'd really like to again but I feel I'm risking two different things depending on if I wear one or not.
