The way I look at it is like this, who do you regard as legitimate title contenders for the MXGP title? For me it’s Gajser, Herlings, Prado, possibly Cairoli, Coldenhoff, Seewer, Febvre. I don’t see Watson as a title threat so that’s how I come to the conclusion that Herlings isn’t really pushing at pre season races. We will see what happens in Russia.
Did you watch the race? Because Watson isn't a title contender on paper you concluded that Herlings wasn't trying hard?
I try to watched the race, through the constant pausing of the stream, cameras following lapped riders & empty track.

To get to your point, no I don’t think Watson is a title contender, do you? To me Herlings wasn’t pushing the limit on a track that looked hard to pass on. Herlings has got his start money so he doesn’t need to push the envelope on a non event. He walked away with the overall, in his eyes job done.

Watson did look solid on the 450, I’m not denying that. As I said earlier, let’s see what happens in Russia.

I can get how you would come to that conclusion, but Herlings was pushing. He came to Lyng to prep for the GP’s, if he just wanted to ride around and not push he needn’t have bothered coming. I don’t think anyone is saying that Ben is now a title contender because of this one race, but yesterday he was a match and more for what Herlings could do. I can accept that Herlings wasn’t at his 100% sharpest, but even an 80% Herlings is good enough to beat 99% of riders in the world, so Ben deserves more credit than to just write it off as Herlings not trying. They were both hauling the mail

Not surprising, in the 2nd moto there was less than a second in it at the end and their fasted lap times were within in a gnat's tit of each other.

I may come across as though I’m downplaying Watson’s ride, I’m not. He looked smooth, his starts were perfect & his looks like he’s gelled with the 450. On TV Herlings didn’t look his normal aggressive self. That maybe due to his recent injury.

What I’m trying to say is, pre season races normally mean nothing results wise.

All BS aside, this has to be the biggest shot of confidence that Watson could have received before the first 450 GP. If your in his camp, you can reference this race all year as a confidence boost. I’m assuming we all thought Herlings was gonna be able to start backwards stop for a cup of tea and still nearly lap the field cause I sure did.

Back on topic....

Did JH just hit this race in the UK so he would be a little closer for his flight to the US or what?

Can't argue with much of that

Herlings needs to work his starts. If you doing nationals and start around 5-7 in mxgp there will be 20 guys ahead and Gajser/Prado/Cairoli always start at front.
Its kind of funny that brits see Watson matching Herlings after one practice race.

You must’ve misread. None of us are saying he’s a match for Herlings in general, but yesterday he was, and he deserves a lot of credit for that. It doesn’t mean much heading into the season but it’s a big confidence boost for Ben and validation that he is more than worthy of that ride

We dont, we just enjoyed watching the best rider we currently have , give the best there is a run for his money on the day.

None of us are expecting Ben to beat Herlings in GP's, but then again , nobody expected Gajser or Febvre to win the 450 title at their first attempt.

But what we did see, which we have waited a long time for , is that he looked instantly at home on the bigger bike.

Its going to be a great season whatever happens, i want to see Herlings back to his best , Cairoli fit , and all the others ride to their full potential. I dont care who wins, as long as the racing is good.

There is a meeting tthere the week before Matterley, GP i think..

Its one of the classic tracks i have yet to ride,,have done Hawkstone, Farliiegh, Matchams, Nantwich, Wakes Colne, Elsworth, Mallory (its a GP track lol) and Canada Heights, but never Lyng,.

To be fair, i am far too old and slow now to justify the trip, but its not often you get to ride somewhere new.

There were some subtle changes from last time i was there, in the field, and through the finish area and on to the start straight, but it still follows the original route pretty much.

The club has always put on a good show, the place looked spot on as always.

I think without confirmation the week of it appears unlikely

fair play to watson he looked very good. Herlings is cranking it up slowly as he wants to be injury free first half of season but still when your mixing it with the bullet your going good. Hope watson can keep it up at the GPs

I really enjoy Tommy’s vlog, well put together & funny too. The footage Ed captured was better than the paid version.
