I've never done a assembly with missing tool or parts, but I do second guess myself on ring installations for example that I installed them correctly in the right direction and referring the installation to point where I actually consider tearing down to check.

I bought a cr125 from the a guy who ran a dealership previously and offered race services in the Suffolk area only to find a ride in that a tyre leaver was coming through the side wall

At a local race one day and we noticed that one of the fast lads who was at the meeting didn't turn up at the start, after the race we went looking for him and a small group of guys was tearing his bike down, bike wouldn't start it had fuel, spark, air but wouldn't run. They'd tried bump starting it while pulling it with the van still wouldn't run. I picked the spark plug up to look at it and it was wet, don't know why but I gave it a sniff, this plug smells like diesel I said. Oh fuck one of them said, they were illegally running the van on gas oil which is diesel stained with a red dye, because of fuel taxation laws in the UK, no to low tax on red diesel. Their 2 stroke oil was red also.........idiots.

Adjusted forks in triple clamps before a moto, sitting on starting line watching last lap of prior moto and I noticed pinch bolts were backed out. Shocked Raced back to truck and snugged them up, made it back to line with about 20 seconds to go. Had plenty of adrenalin for that moto.

I had a well known engine builder in El Cajon, CA port the cylinder on my 83 RM250 in 84. They also stress relieved the top of the piston which removed the direction arrow on the piston. Of course I put the damn piston in backwards. Ran great for a minute... Had to have the bottom end rebuilt. I hated to tell the mechanic what I had done.
Would that engine builder be Danny Duncan? Lauren's dad from Duncan Racing?

I know I'm not the only one to do something this stupid, Fess up, lets gear some of your maintenance and upgrade mishaps.

How do you like that "No Pinch" tire tool?...Wink

Ha, it definitely doesn't pinch! I seriously have no idea how it made it 7 hours like that.
Honestly I don’t use one, I’m good enough with irons...but I wouldn’t say no if one were to show up in my toolbox. If I were running mousses forget it

Sorry Lenny, i misread your response...

Murph, I wasn't to sure on the no pinch tool either, its a little cumbersome at first but once you get the hang of it its really pretty nice.

Working on my TX300 a couple years ago removing the fuel tank to install a high comp head. Finished it, bike ran great! Went to work on another bike of mine and simply could not find my 10mm socket for the life of me so I ended up buying another one. A few months later I sold that TX300. Then the new owner text me asking if I was missing a 10mm socket, I said yes. Sends a photo, it was still attached to the top bolt that mounts the fuel tank to the frame under the seat🤣!

In the mid 90s, I put an XR600 motor together from the ground up. The counterbalancer was a two-piece design held together with a snap ring.

Imagine my joy when I had the entire motor re-assembled, in the frame and oil lines purged when I saw the counterbalancer snap ring laying on the work bench....
What did you do.....leave the engine sit for a week and re tackle it ? Throw a wrench ? Or just start tearing it back down...

Channeled my inner Chris Knox; drained about three beers then began the teardown process...

Yep, and pulled like tractor. Lad went out and won the remaining races. Sack the mechanic, was the cry.

Ages ago, I did the same as you, only with a tube.
It didn't took me long to find where my tire iron was: I got a flat in about 5 minutes.

I work in the plant hire game, we get loads of 2 stroke machines coming back with diesel in them. “Not working” it says on the ticket. Open the fuel cap, diesel. Drain it out, feel it up with pre mix then run it up in the workshop to piss the other lads off Laughing .

Broke a tranny shaft on my ‘81 yz125. Put gears back in order per manual. Ride bike , 1-2-4-3 sheet ? Tear apart and take gears to Yamaha shop. Same results after having a certified mechanic set it up. Tear apart again and switch gear locations. Looks like the manuals were wrong that year 😬

I'll confess. It was Tony Smith Racing. It was a favor for the Suzuki shop owner that I worked at.
There, I feel better now.
