I should have spread this post out in progress chunks but I blew it. I picked up this bike from a coworker for $250. It was seized and showed up in pieces. Had low intentions of rebuilding it until California shut down. So here it is 9 months later just waiting on graphics. My first time actually restoring a bike, but the goal is now to race it at Mammoth ‘21. Excuse the photo dump. Hope you guys like what you see.

Wow I wish I would come across those deals! Haha
It came out really clean!! Do you have more pictures or you could explain the whole process, how much was the total budget,...
I saw a 1992 CR250 right by my house on OfferUp that was kinda “bad” condition this week for 900$ but I wasn’t able to snatch it :/

Forks are kyb kit psf1 off a 2014 CRF, and I had applied mill the clamps for a ‘96 with the proper bore for the forks. Oversized brakes off the ‘14 as well. I couldn’t get a response from Emig racing for the factory replica clamps unfortunately.

I set out with a $2500 budget and quickly exceeded that once I bought forks and clamps haha. Initially bought a wrench rabbit kit and returned it almost same day after finally doing some research and getting a OEM crank from a 2000 CR250 I believe (I’d have to check receipts). Every moving part in the motor was replaced all oem. V-Force 3 reed cage, BUD racing pile with pro circuit Ti carbon silencer. Pro Circuit didn’t have a ETA on a works finish exhaust.

I didn’t set out to be 100% period correct, but fairly clean with some modern touches. I was lucky enough that the bearings in the bike were thrashed but came out fairly easy. No part of the build saw any vapor blasting, all done with elbow grease. I think overall I spent $4300 on the bike. In all honesty I wish I would have documented the build a little better but with working a lot and small kids at home I would pick away at it and tell myself I’ll take pictures and post em tomorrow haha.

Once graphics are on I’m takin it to the track. But just cruising it around I forgot how good those bikes actually felt. They don’t ride as dated as they look at all.

AWESOME BUILD!

Gary at Emig Racing scrapped 2 sets of hard-to-find OEM 22mm offset clamps for my 2008 CRF450R trying to bore them to fit A-kit PSF1s (1mm oversize if I recall correctly). That dude cost me a lot of money in clamps and labor and insisted they were all bad. One set was new take-offs. He would never own up to anything and it was always someone else's fault. Just throwing that out there for those considering him. I wish I had gone to Applied.

Oh - and he never once would respond to me, either, I think that's just the way he is. Very similar to Eric Gorr in my experience.

My recollection of the power on the 96 CR250R was that it had more than any other Japanese 250 I rode after it (namely 2001 CR250R and 2006+ YZ250s).

I also remember that powervlave spacers really made a big difference on these motors. They look like this (I think I had a 15mm version by Boyesen):
http://www.vintagehonda.nl/for-sale/hrc-replica-parts/

The amount of low-end power that the spacer added to mine was almost too much. I was shocked. I was running the FMF SST (and the accompanying silencer) if that helps fill-in that picture at all. The engine was stock otherwise. Unbelievably awesome engine, that's what I remember.

Did you run the UFO front rotor cover? I have a 95 I did and need an oversized rotor. Also what clamps did you run?

This is very interesting to hear. So it made a big difference? I have a 1995 CR250. My brother has a 1993 CR250. He bought a spacer but it hits the exhaust so he could not use it. I have a different exhaust. Maybe I should try it.

Beautiful build. Stunning.
I believe the $4000.00 mark is what it takes to do a proper build replacing just about everything.
To make it even worthwhile to sell it you need to get close to $10,000.00 to possibly pay for all the time. If someone can do a build like yours for under $2000.00 they simply did not replace everything.

It’s good to see validation of that amount in another quality build.

Huge thanks to Rider 5280. Great info on those spacers. I never knew their value in adding low end. I bought one of the HRC replica ones. It’s 15mm which may need me to switch out to another pipe. I couldn’t find any of the 10mm ones.
Great post Rider .. Very cool.

Which pipe he has and which pipe is yours?

I have a PC pipe on my 92. I know the 10mm spacer would work with that pipe.
My 95 has a stock pipe and there is maybe 20mm of gap between the cover and pipe.

I couldn’t find the 10mm spacer. I went with the 15mm and if need so I will have it surfaced down to fit my 92.

Thanks for the info, I’d see those pop up from time to time searching the inter web for pets. I’ll look into them.

It’s a cycra rotor cover and the clamps are applied. Turn around time on the clamps was really quick too. Even with the custom bore. I was really impressed.

They’re KYB PSF1 A-Kit. Kashima uppers with DLC lowers.
