Interesting to hear Cooksey was forced to stop his podcasts by WPS or lose his job.

How could he not? The guy signing his paycheck runs the biggest media source in our sport and the nationals. Its not a conspiracy, its smart business. I can promise you if Matthes started bagging on any of the title sponsors or MXSports that DC would put a gag on it pronto.

And Matthes does way more on his own with Pulp MX than he does as a contributor here at Racer X. And for what it's worth, it's getting harder and harder to find great contributors like Matthes or writers like Eric Johnson and Jason Weigandt and Brett Smith and David Pingree because most of the young talent out there writes in social media-sized bits now. There are not a lot of people coming up through the media ranks that have the understanding, the discipline and the work ethic of guys like Matthes. And here's one for you: If he didn't write for Racer X, which other magazine magazine that's still out there there would hire him to write about SX/MX? It's a small carousel nowadays, so Steve mostly does his own work, and "the top" has zero say there, so why even bother when he's critical of "the top" and the series sponsors, because chances are very good that he has a very good reason...

So if Matthes started pushing a narrative that MxSports that painted you as a promoter in a bad light and that gained steam with fans and sponsors and cost you money, you wouldn't consider that when his contract with racerx comes up? What about when he needed press credentials next season? If Transworld was still around and Bonnier wanted to title sponsor the nationals would you let them?

I like steve, keefer, and all the other guys doing pods, but I am not naive to think that their message isn't influenced by the people signing their paychecks. This sport is way to small and niche for any of our media sources to be truly independent in what they say.

I just find it hard to believe that the person that practically controls half of the sport in the us and the biggest media presence, has no influence over the messages broadcast by people on their payroll.
Matthes has said in the past DC has called and yelled at him for things he’s said. Those are facts.
Also matthes 100% has been holding back these last few years.

We’ve all got skeletons in our closet, but the AMA closet is really big, and filled with money. Hopefully nobody breaks in and steals it all... again...

Disregard all the downvotes….. You sir have described the entire industry and its own self imposed limitations in a few paragraphs. Anyone that disagrees either hasn't worked in it before and/it doesn't understand the illogical rampant nepotism that keeps this industry in the bush leagues.
When you put ex racers and fans in charge of big companies and run the racing structure, you get what we have.
In larger racing organizations like NASCAR or F1, the people running those are well educated in business, marketing and promoting a professional series. When people ask why sx/mx cant get any bigger, these are the reasons why. Fyi I'm not trying to downtalk moto its just what it is because of the people in charge and I'm not singling out any one person, its just what it is and always has been.

And yet JGR, the big time NASCAR team with all its highly educated business and marketing people couldn’t seem to make it work. I guess they weren’t core enough for the MX industry.
Big problem for them was Feld not allowing their sponsors to be shown on tv, sometimes they would crop out the sponsors on the riders jerseys on the podium.. same issue RCH and two two had..

If a bunch of top riders got popped in a massive doping ring, that might actually give the sport some credibility.

But even though that's not been discovered, there is a strong probability that a professional sport requiring intense athletic and mental performance with lots of money on the line will have people has doping going on.

Lance Armstrong never tested positive and was the most prolific doper.... maybe he could have a run at the nationals this year?

I would be fine with supercross being an off season World Series for riders from all countries, with majority of the focus being on motocross.

When someone a little out there mentions you in a podcast and then you get linked to a PED drug ring and accused of covering it up and also keeping journalists from doing their jobs, and not being "highly educated" or smart enough to be in this position you've worked your way up to, on a message board you've been an active member of since it began, you tend to want to react and respond to criticism.

And yes, I've yelled at Matthes--I don't agree with everything he writes--but I've never made him retract anything that wasn't factually wrong on Racer X (I have no say on PulpMX or his podcasts). He does a very good job being right 99.9% of the time.

Outside of this interview, I know nothing of Mr..Grondahl. But if I had to base my impression of him on this interview alone, he strikes me as a guy who hit the lottery on his gym deal, but at his base is not equipped to operate at this level. Not impressed.

Very true. Keefer was explaining what a fat pig the Yamaha was and Matthes kept interrupting until Keefer gave up. Bought and paid for.

If you listen to Keefer enough he doesn’t think the Yamaha is a fat pig, he does admit it’s a bit wider but he loves that bike. What he was trying to explain was how it’s actually better for shorter riders. Steve doing his ‘blucru, blucru’ rant is akin to you and your buddies talking shit at the track. That show is really just a bunch of dudes bench racing and we get to be a fly on the wall, pretty cool imo

I don't see how this can be construed as conspiracy.

A trusted group of associates (Field, Youthstream) controlling a specified arena (MX) for 'your protection'.

So I listened to the podcast...to me, it sounded like a guy that ultimately failed at a business venture, and that is to prideful to just admit he didn't have what it took to succeed and/or made mistakes which prevented long term success...and instead, is blaming other people for his failure so he doesn't have to accept personal responsibility.

Just my meaningless take on the interview...

Alright bud, then give us an example of where DC has controlled Matthes' messaging. What grand conspiracy has been out there that he was given the gag order on?

If you're so sure about it then please let the rest of us know when it happened. I expect details, dates and facts since you are so sure of yourself on this one.

Can't wait to hear this, it should be good....
