I’m currently in the market for a new moto van I have a Chevy express right now but I’m kind of tired of getting 12-13 mpg with it. I’ve decided I want to get either a Transit or a Promaster. How’s everybody like them for hauling bikes? What are some pros and cons of both? It wouldn’t be my daily driver so it would just be a second vehicle used to go riding basically. I know the Promaster is fiat which I’m a little scared of but they can be had for 4K-5k cheaper than the fords so I’ll consider it

I had a promaster high roof and loved it. Honestly I don't think you can go wrong either way. I'm not a fan of eco-boost engines, so there is that. I had the long wheel base promaster and added a electric reclining seat behind that folded into a bed and could have the bikes loaded with the seat flat. If you're coming from an express, you'll love the high roof. V6 2500 20 mpg.

Had a 2014 high roof 136 Promaster and loved it. Made the mistake of selling it to a buddy so now I have a 2019 high roof 159 Promaster and use it for moto and hauling my shifter kart around. This time I won’t sell it, when I retire in 7 years I plan to turn it into my travel van.

I have a 2018 transit 12 passenger med roof with the na 3.7 v6. Has plenty of power and I love the thing. Put some plus size all terrains on it and painted the silver wheels and it looks great. Everyone loves it. I usually just keep seating for 5-7 in there and can put so much stuff in there. Room for days

Love it so much I sold my truck and trailer

Do you want front wheel drive or rear wheel drive? I’ve got a sprinter, but it sounds like you aren’t interested in those. The transit is much more sprinter like and the promaster fwd layout has some advantages, notably the handling in slick conditions and the lack of a driveshaft gives extra room in equivalent exterioir heights over rwd models because they can put the floor lower and use a drop axle in the rear. Other than that, the drive feel is really weird and feels kind of like a cab over wheels truck. The transit is a better vehicle for North American road use.

The FWD is definitely an intriguing part of the Promaster as I live in the north so I would be dealing with snow in the winter. I’d love a sprinter but they’re a little pricey for me. My main concern is reliability

No first hand knowledge of the promaster but I have read of issues with them but the guys posting here didnt have issues so that is good to see. I like the transit a lot but don't get the diesel. I know of several that had major issues right around 100k. I just got an express but I'd love to go to a mid or high roof transit in a couple years.

Ouch. AWD is nice, especially if you live in snow country and go to tracks with muddy parking lots. But that's a pricey option to get worse gas mileage, have more moving parts, and higher insurance premium.

Exactly, It would be nice to have but I get along fine without it right now and it’s not worth 5k to me haha

I have a 2016 ford transit 250 with 56k on it we have had no problems, We average 17-18 MPG on the highway. It does not have the ecoboost so it is a little bit of a turd. Don't mind the donut tires was only pic i had on computer from photoshop class.

I used to have a sprinter and i do miss the better mileage in it, but did not care for the maintenance cost having to go to mercedes because it was still under warranty.

‘18 T350. Daily driver, work, Moto...54K miles, 16 MPG around town. just did my 2nd rear brake job with new rotor $500. I think the proportioning valve is wrong, that is the only thing so far. No eco boost.

That was big deciding factor... FWD (outside of 4WD) for me living in Canada is a big plus.

I have a 2015 Promaster (tall and long), bought it new. 17 plus MPG and no issues at all. 60K miles on it now. It's sole purpose is for my hauling toys to the track and trail. The only complaint I had was the headlights as you can't update them.

I had an Express with the 2.8 duramax in it. Those things get incredible mileage. Like, I couldn’t believe how good. I averaged about 25mpg with it. I could get 700 Mike’s to a tank on long trips. I loved that thing

Mine has been solid, but my buddy's puked a transmission. Luckily it was still under warranty....

I like my Promaster, but like others have said it has an odd seating position (cab over), which is great for short stints but sucks for longer hauls.

I love the space, and I absolutely love being able to lock up my stuff in the garage in the back. That feature alone is pretty awesome, but you can get that with a Transit or a Sprinter. I'd look hard at all three rigs...

I hate the lack of leg room for the driver in the Promaster...it's really hard to stretch your legs, and for those of us that have beat up knees from decades of moto and desert racing that's like torture. You can't put your feet up under the dash like most vehicles and straighten your legs...it just dead ends, so you end up having to kind of "stand up" while driving to give your knees some relief once in a while.

Have a 2018 Transit 350 high roof dually with the eco-boost. Bought new in August of 2019 and now has a little over 52,000. Zero problems with it, has never had to go back for any warranty work. Cost of the van and maintenance costs are why I chose it over the sprinter. I also put in a pretty basic wall.

I didn’t even consider the ProMaster because #1 they are just so ugly 😬 and more importantly my wife also uses the van to haul a horse trailer (which it also works great for)

I also use it on and off as my daily driver and it is very maneuverable for its size.

What services were you needing during the warranty? I had an independent shop perform all my regular maintenance and the dealer still honored the warranty. I had a brake booster and a warped section of the floor replaced under warranty.

I have a 2019 Promaster 2500 with the V6- absolutely love it. I had a Chevy Express before- I will never buy anything other than a tall roof van (I'm 6'2")

I did a lightweight "bare bones" build in the van to keep rear weight low as the van is front wheel drive.
Insulated and fabricated interior panels and storage boxes and built a fold down bed with a work bench that doubles as bed legs when folded down. I also built a removeable partition wall to separate the garage area from the rider lounge if needed.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, and the front wheel drive is amazingly capable in slick conditions- however I do suggest the suspension upgrade and leveling kit!

I've put thousands of miles on Sprinters , Transits, and now the Promaster while hauling bikes/gear/surfboards/etc-
I have to say that out of the long body high roof vans, the Promaster handles better than any of them. When insulated properly it's also amazingly quiet due to no rear drivetrain.

All of these vans will have small details that will make you scratch your head- go test drive them all!

If you do decide on the Promaster, try to keep the overall weight towards the front of the vehicle!

At the beginning of the Panickdemic/Zombie Apocalypse, I bought a Transit long-wheelbase/mid-roof (purchased March 12th, 2020). It’s now got 45,500 miles on it. It hauls ass! 80-85 mph up and down Interstate 5 isn’t unusual for my commutes...and sometimes traffic out in the middle of nowhere goes 90mph...even up and down the Grapevine or over Donner Pass on I-80. The Transit handles better than the Sprinters I’ve had...ESPECIALLY in high side winds! But, we’re comparing a mid-roof Transit to a Sprinter hi-roof...to be fair.

It seems like it’s always got a bike or two in it. I’ve saved thousands of dollars on shipping & other transportation costs during the “madness”, too. I’ve been able to help out with moving bikes and parts, equipment for friends, also.

The stock Continental tires have been impressive and they’re still on there, too. I’ve been fairly impressed with my local Ford dealer, Tuttle-Click in San Juan Capistrano, I got a “12 Oil Change & Rotate package” for $300 (Synth Oil). They’ve handled the few little warranty items like champs: USB port “pushed in” and a little plastic cover on the CHIMSL blew off...a known “Transit thing”.

I’m stoked on this van. It’s a std gas engine and it’s been excellent. It’s got the trailer pkg w/trlr brakes, mirrors and receiver. It’s got the audio upgrade & a few other necessities like cruise and all the power stuff. I’m about to change out the trans and diff oil at 50K (I do this on my vehicles and it seems to make transmissions last!) I plan to keep this rig for 3-4 years or 150-200K miles. I’m going to probably build a Transit Box Van.

the standard is the 3.7L V6, that have the optional 3.5 Ecoboost and a diesel option.

Don't buy one for MPG alone. The math never works out in favor of saving money in that scenario. If you want one because they are taller inside, nicer to drive, newer, etc then by all means go for it. but don't do it solely for MPG.

Thru 2019 the std engine was the 3.7 V6.

In 2020 it became a 3.5

The Diesel is suppose to be back soon, too.

Promaster with 70K miles, trans went out. Before that, the trans mounts went bad, and various other recall stuff. The dealer had the van for 4 weeks fixing the trans.I sold it and bought a Transit, only 5k miles on it, so far its fine and the eco boost rips! BTW warranty on the PM is 60k, so be sure to get an extended warranty if you get one, those repairs would have been over $10,000.00

I just ordered a 2021 high roof extended transit AWD with ecoboost. I’ve heard the maintenance cost of the sprinter is terrible. They do look good though.

If anyone is ordering brand new transit custom, let me know and I can help you out some. I just ordered mine and there are a ton of options! Don’t use the 2020 Ford build website (there have been changes to the 2021). Also, expect 4-5 months from order to delivery to dealer. You’ll need to find a dealer with allocation. Don’t just speak to any salesman if you are custom ordering.
