That's just about the coolest, most professional setup I've ever seen.

I drove the Honda Road Race rig for the 2001 season and it looked very similar to this.

Then I drove the TLD Supermoto rig for a season and then filled in here and there for the mx team for a while.

Today was a little gnarly, blizzard conditions in Iowa. I, ve seen much worse, but the constant 50 mph plus wind gust. Driving on 1.5 in of ice, keeps your focus locked. Taking a route people traveled b4 interstates, emporia Kansas. Rt. 50 to 61 to 54 drops ya on i40. Ks. Wind was worse gust of 65mph, 1 gust lasted 4-5 seconds. Upper body is burning, not .1 second break. Hazmat liquid totes, pull worse than 488,000 in a super tanker. Makes you earn every .75 cpm. The people you meet traveling is the best part. The tiny Woman that loaded this, was awesome. We had a lot of laughs.

Yep that was me, I'm not one to get behind the camera much, but I think those videos turned out pretty cool. And at the time I was the youngest driver in the paddock (22), and most inexperienced so it was fun to throw those together. Glad you enjoyed them!

I pursued a career in the Fire Service and was fortunately picked up with LA County Fire. A lot of what I learned on the team transferred over into helping me achieve my career goal for sure.
I've been haulin transporters since '96. You made a better career move. I know quite a few Ca. employees. Can't beat that retirement.

I drove that Violation trailer one year. It was wore out. Someone was mentioning tires scrubbing on these type of trailers. Funny story. When I start working for a team, one of the first things I do is get the trailer axles set up. This rig had already had the axles wired, they just didn't know it. So, I and one of the team owners buddy's ran a wire from the trailer up in to the cab. By running 12 volt to a solenoid valve, you can control the air bags for the suspension. What you do is override the leveler. Filling the air bags up completely will give you 5-6 inches more or ground clearance easy. You can also wire them separately. By doing this you can extend the front trailer axle(actually lowering it so the trailer raises up) . Then take all the air out of the rear axle will actually lift it off the ground. By doing this you effectively shorten the trailer length since it is now pivoting off of the front axle. And you get no scrubbing on the rear axle.
The next year the schedule interfered with the Ferrari team I work for so I set my buddy up with the job. I really liked working for the owner.

Thanks Maverick for this thread. Drove at least three of the rigs posted. Miss the mx days. Moved on to cars. A lot more money and less races per year = more home time. Plus, car teams will fly you in. Don't have to live in the LA area.

Over ride the leveler, with no air regulated, you must blow a lot of air bags. You can make a lot of changes to equipment tho. Strongest horizontal drill rig in the world. We designed and built it all, mud rig, cleaning unit. 24 volt much quicker, air clutch operated from the survey trailer. 11 axles on the rig no air bags. 200k per mile on east coast moves in 94. Super Liner v8 Mack turned way up.

Just out of curiosity, do you drive for 1 specific team or different teams/series?

Have you always driven for race teams or did you haul a whole bunch of different stuff before falling into your current gig?

Which moto team was the best to work for?

Drive for a specific team and then fill in with other teams in other series when scheduling permits. Between IMSA, Grand Am, World Challenge and Ferrari Challenge I can get plenty of work. That's the way it is in car racing for fly ins. If you want to work full time for one team you got to live close. Then the pay isn't as good. Better to be a fly in if you can keep busy.
Started driving trucks in the early 80's when I was still racing. In the 90's I started racing cars. Decided to go back to college and finish my engineering degree. While doing that I heard a local team needed to hire someone. Walk in and a buddy(who use to be a Yamaha support rider and fast as heck) I use to race with worked there. That got me in. With plenty of racing background, some engineering, and a Co. license I was lucky. It's really who you know. I've seen a lot of drivers that couldn't shift or drive for crap running pretty nice race trucks around. Funny that I have never had a skills test when starting with a team. My current team is kinda a funny story. Well, maybe sad for the guy I replaced. He still won't talk to me at races. Anyways, Had worked for this team previously a couple times. They called me up a few years later and said we need a toter home stacker trailer drove out to Limerock. When I got there, the other driver had unhitched the tractor and we bob tailed it to the hotel. This guy was hired from Penske's race team. He couldn't make a single shift without grinding the crap out of the gears and jerking the truck around. Couple weeks after the race they call me up and asked if I could drive the truck for just a one day test. They didn't want to fly the other guy out just for one day. Plus, he said it didn't shift for crap and they wanted me to check it out. They had just bought the rig used. So I went and drove it for them. The problem was one cylinder Jake brake was sticking. So the engine would decelerate quickly. To shift smooth you had to keep your foot on the gas a little to match the rpm. The other guy didn't figure this out and was double clutching on top of that. I tried to tell him back at the track not to double clutch. His answer was Penske brought of Fleet trainers to teach some of us and this is how we are suppose to do it. I told him that's great when your a beginner. Now you have experience so don't use the clutch. He just wouldn't believe I was right. Double clutching takes so long by the time he did that the engine was at idle. When I told the team what the problem was they hired me. Sent him down the road. I got the Jake fixed and am still driving that truck today. I have since bobtailed around with the owners and showed them. If a guy can't shift so smooth you don't feel it, don't hire him.
As far as Moto teams I never worked for the factory 5. At the time those drivers where set and not looking to move on
. I got an offer back in the car stuff so I move on.

Never blown a one. It's regulated and you don't go down the road with them extended. It's just for driveways you can't clear. Happens a lot with them that low. I've never driven anything like that. Just regular low boy stuff and triples. There aint nothing like a motor turned up though.

Use to have the cab over style. It was popular when pulling double or triple trailers because of the shorter length. In the 70's Freightliner built a lot of them. Rode like crap. That's how Freightliner got it's nickname of Freightshaker. They had all been phased out by the 80's to help with driver retention. Hay haulers still use them. I didn't like the ride. Sometimes you would be bouncing around so bad you literally couldn't take a drink of your coffee. Didn't like the small sleeper bed. But, they sure were great for backing in to tight spots. Saw one of the Euro trucks over here when I was doing the Historic races. The team had shipped it over here to haul around their F1 car for the season. Had the shifter up on the dash. It was a cool truck. Driver said the first thing he did was go to a Dealer and have the speed limiter turned up. Told me they could only turn it up to 72 mph and he was still getting his doors blown off by the US trucks.

I use to love the yank trucks with the big nose on them, then swung the other way when my bro drove for beneton f1 team, the f1 had some serious smart bits of kit

I take it they don't care about speed restrictions and length over in the states then 😁
Poor ol truck drivers in UK are restricted to around 54mph I think

10-4 ok I figured you aired up the bags for properties and stuff. Pretty tired lastnight. Hey was that you today in NM. On I-40, I saw 2 Ferrari rigs east bound hauling ass. On my 10 hr break yrs ago I helped a couple Yamaha guys do inventory on there rig. So they could enter Canada correctly. Talked with a bunch of race rig drivers over the years. The stock cars look cool with rubber stuck all over the front and tire rub marks. This rig was parked near Milwaukee. Any idea why there is so many race rigs in that area. Usually at a couple businesses s. Of town. Not on road America race weekend

I've always been curious about the pay for this type of gig. Is it pretty equivalent to a regular OTR job? mileage pay, hourly, salary? I know there is a lot more that goes into it as I've talked with tedder back in the day but didn't talk pay.

It’s all salary pay for the race teams and a lot of the teams are 1099 also. But no it’s nowhere near equivalent to an OTR job, there is cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, filming, helping out during race day with various things, etc.. also if you do Supercross and motocross seasons you are on the road from January till early September, which isn’t bad at all. Pay depends on the team you work for and the experience you bring with you from other racing teams like motorcycle racing or car racing.
