Chain lube question...road vs. off road

My wife ordered the Motorex chain care kit for me as a Christmas gift. The kit includes a chain degreaser, 2 cans of chain lube and a cleaning towel. When she gave me the kit I noticed that the chain lube is for road bikes and not off-road applications. My question is this: Is it okay to use this chain lube for MX applications or is it going to be far too sticky and attract every dust/dirt particle in sight?

She was going to send it back but can’t because it’s flammable products.

Thanks!

It’s likely to be fine. Roadbikes don’t like dirt sticking either.
Even “sticky” lubes tend to look worse than they are - most dirt sticking to the “outside” of the plates. Not on the rollers etc.

I personally use “chain wax” - road and dirt.

Worst case: use it when it’s muddy, and something “drier” when it’s dusty?

Not sure about that specific product but i use maxima chain wax on both dirtbikes and street bikes.

Biggest thing with chains is cleaning them all the time. That has more effect on chain life than the lube itself.

Question while we’re here on the topic:

I’ve always used white lithium grease on my chain and all my bearings.

For a non oring chain that gets cleaned and regreased after every ride, is this good stuff or should I stick with standard chain lube and bearing grease?

Given a choice, you really should use chain lube for chains, bearing grease for bearings, etc.

A ton of effort goes into application-specific lubrication design and after having been part of the design of extreme machines with specific lubrication requirements for many years, I no longer chance things. That said, for my personal needs (vet riding 250Fs and 450Fs far below their potential), I am certain I could "get by" with less application-specific lube matching. But I always do a quick inspection for wear, galling, etc., on all of my equipment - and the right lube for the job always is evident.

Many argue it's not worth paying a premium. That's a whole can of worms right there ...

P.S. Super cool of your wife to get you that as a present! I say you use the lube and see how you like it - sometimes there are good surprises to be had. Worst case is you quickly learn there is a significant difference and you stop. Lesson learned, good story ... and an excuse to get a street bike.

ive used 10 different chain lubes over the years. chain life was the same no matter which brand i used, what seemed to change from type to type was if it made a mess on the bike by flinging off or not. so i use chain wax now, i apply it long before i get to the track, wipe up excess while its still liquid form. and it sets up and doesnt fling off later

I don't think you'll have a problem. Roadrace chain lubes usually resist flinging better, while off-road lubes are less sticky. Just wipe down as much as possible after application and you'll be fine.

I find coconut oil works the best.

That would be because you ^^^ are a coconut. Maybe you pronounce it "Cococanook?" (all in good fun, please take it that way)

Interesting video, for sure. Thanks for sharing Matt Fisher. I always enjoy the different test methods people develop/employ to simulate how they perceive the actual application/conditions at play.

Since we're going down a rabbit hole (enjoying this!), I always appreciate cycling extremes. Here's some more interesting data:

I find it suuuuper interesting how oil and lube threads are like religion and politics ... and here I am commenting. Oy ...

P.S. High Side - you need to share this thread with your wife. She'll get a kick out of it (and probably think you're more sane)

Best chain lube I’ve used.

Doesn’t attract dirt, keeps it clean, keeps rust away, and keeps it lubed nicely. I put it on after washing the bike.

I use a rag and spray above the swingarm and run it thru 1 or 2 rotations and wipe off the excess as I go.

I don’t ever spray it while just spinning the wheel and let the lube get all over the place gunking up the sprocket, hub, spokes etc. ppl who do that are something not from this planet if you ask me.

Ive been racing for years, I have 2 boys that started on 50s 10 years ago and still racing, 85s now. Ive used WD40 Lithium since for years on race day and regular WD40 after washing. I dont use WD40 because im too cheap to buy the "good stuff", but rather its it doesnt collect dirt or fly off like the sticky lubes do and lubes just as good as the others. I get normal wear and no less chain and sprocket life.

I don't have a problem with fling off. I've used Maxima chainwax, didn't care all that much for it. Maxima regular lube, Motul, Belray and some others that are no longer around from the 70 and 80's. I figure it's a dirt bike and if it gets a little oil or grease or chain lube somewhere, oh well, my bike is no garage queen. I'll just clean it up when I am done riding.
