Cost of trucks..

Just think of a Ridgeline as what it really is... An SUV you can put your bike in. Hate that if you want.

I'm at the point that if my truck isn't giving me problems, then I'm going to keep running it. I have a '14 Tacoma with 150k on it. It still looks nice and has been fine (knock on wood.) New trucks are so expensive and with all the electronics, I just don't trust things going wrong and being a big deal. I like the simplicity of my truck and I think they look great. So I know it's an old man thing to say but if it ain't broke....

I have a 2015 F150 with 115,000 miles that I originally ordered at the end of 2014 when they first became available to order. It’s been a good steed but I’m thinking about trading it in on a 2021 Ridgeline. Sorry, not sorry.

I need to be able to put 3 booster seats in the back. Has anyone done this in a Ridgeline? I don’t think 3 fit in either the Tacoma or Ranger.

Everyone rags the Ridgeline but it would serve the purpose for the majority of us. We’re hauling dirt bikes and some gear.

Unpopular opinion:

Take the $6k you available and buy the best used truck you can find!

Save the $500+ a month you would be spending on new truck payment to pay off debt, mortgage, or invest, by a new bike, etc.

Does anybody have any experience or opinions on the 14' 5.3l ecotec3 motor? I had a 4.7 in an 02 silverado and drove the piss out of it as a teenanger and it was the best truck I've owned hands down, thing never knocked or ate oil.
Early model year, some had oil consumption problems.

I'd avoid any 14+ chevy. The 6 speed autos in the 1/2 ton trucks are garbage. My torque converter failed at 53k miles on my 17.

A guy I currently work with has a 14 with over 200k on it. He's had the transmission out of it 4 times.

Three would be tight but I’m sure it’s doable if you have the smaller sized booster seats. We have two forward facing and it seems to work great for us.

Downvote me all you want but the Ridgeline is a truck just like a Sledge hammer and a Ball Pein hammer are both hammers.

Ask any experienced tradesmen for a hammer and they will reply "What kind of hammer?"

A Honda Ridgeline isn't competing with a Ram 2500 or a Denali 3500 Crew Cab Long Box Dually with a Duramax. Different trucks for different uses, both are considered a Truck.

As something to live with every day the Ridgeline would stun many people if they just gave it a chance. IF you tow 10-15,000 lbs regularly..its not for you and Honda knows that. If you tow a dirtbike to the track and get groceries and kids bikes and costco shit you don't need, and Ikea furniture, dogs, etc....its fantastic.

OP since your budget is 20-25k a 2nd gen RL is out of the question as the hold their resale value extremely well. 1st gen trucks from 06-14 are plentiful, take a look at a 2009+ RTL and make sure the timing belt gets changed ever 100k if you ever get serous about buying one.

Not saying I’d want one but it serves some kind of purpose I suppose.

I had an older 98 Silverado and got tired of spending weekends working on it and thinking about the money I was spending on a old truck.

Decided to sell it and got a 16 Silverado with about 60k miles for about $30,000.

I’m happy, it’s 4WD, V8, 4 doors, and instead of spending money on parts, I can now have reliable transportation, can haul my bike in it, and more time!

For that matter you could use your purse or even your high heels as a hammer, just sayin’.

I had a hard time deciding on a new truck. I chose a 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro for reliability and resale value.
I paid $45k OTD last May and could sell it for more right now. You cannot say that about any other brand. And reliability is top notch.

I like it allot and have started modding it for our travels.

Would I do it again....no. I would have gone the vintage route like a mid 70's Ford F150 or 250, four springs and simple electrics.

The Taco or any new truck scares the crap out of me with all the bells and whistles they have

Yup. Have had my '98 k1500 for 12 years and the only new truck I'd buy is a Ram TRX. Hence another possible 12 years in the '98 haha

Long story short I had to get a car for a previous job.. well fast forward two years I beat the car to piss and now I ride almost every weekend that im out of college I really could benefit from a truck. I have an old yukon that costs me nothing I use with a moto jack. Although she's a 6.0 with 160k miles and she's tired.. I have been told after the first quarter both our industry and the car industry should be back to "normal" inventory. I have a solid job, not a ton of expenses, and have 6k I can put down. I have waited all of covid to get a truck but im tired of waiting and feel like my car and yukon are ticking timb bombs. So do I man up and wait for who knows how long.. Or man up, bite the bullet and try to find a deal (LOL) before tax refunds or potenially more stimulus? Truck prices are driving me bonkers.

But the GMT800 and GMT900s are both built well. Even if things started going wrong, would still be cheaper than financing new. You are looking at 30k plus for even a shite single cab.

You could go used, 5,000 but for a late GMT400 Chevy/ GMC (post 1996 is best for OBDII diagnostics). 5,000 will also get you a high mileage z71 Silverado Sierra from 199-2006. Has ABS, heated seats, cruise all the cool modern shit. Will be cheap to maintain. In fact , you could sell your Tahoe or trade it for one.

Well, It is probably ready for lifters, it leaks oil if I don't drive it for a week or so. Regardless I can't drive it for work, I drive too much it would be a car payment just to fill it up. It was always taken care of but used as a tow vehicle for a long time, Tranny shifts hard, I have to baby it.
I am a recent grad as well, though a bit older than you I am guessing (still in my 20s) and I can assure you that payments suck azz, even when the money is good. Better to save than flush $500 a month for no reason than to look cool/good like you said. Even if the tranny goes out 2k for a rebuild is 15 times less expensive than a new ride. I know you just want to buy a new whip, which is kewl but low key you can buy a dope 4x4 truck for way less than 10k that is reliable and looks good.

Unless you are a recent grad in engineering or com sci or are working in the oil patch, a new car is gonna make you what they call ‘car poor’ anyways. I would go crew cab GMT900 1500 or 2500 (gas) with the 5.3 or 6.0, z71 since you have to look cool for the girls and need to have a 4wd for the country gals. Sell the Tahoe and use your cash savings and pocket the 500 a month.

My wheels where in another state. So I rented a silerado , engine, trans are junk, rode terrible, mph sucked. 1988 to 95 chev 350 tbi much better engine, great low end power, trans better, rides better than any truck made. Simple bolt ons get 29mpg. Looks hot. There the next big thing, a lot of people looking for one. There is 50k miles and lower, out there . They want 20k, still better deal than junk at 60k

Same boat here I finally had to break down and buy one. Got a pretty fresh 2017 Silverado 1500 for 19000 out the door with 40k miles. I loved my old truck but it was an 05 Chevy 1500 with 300k miles overall it was a good deal and I’m pretty happy. Do what’s best for you, and what fits your budget.

Stay out of debt. Keep driving what you have or sell it and buy something less-used. Just not worth going into debt for a car/truck. Fwiw I’ve been running a 7.3L diesel f250 for almost 20yrs now. It’s never failed to get me to a race.

Outline your needs, do your homework, budget to the best of your ability, pull the trigger and don't look back. It's hard to make perfect decisions, there's too many variables. Ride, love, work smart and enjoy life. Trucks seem to hold value better than cars!

That is what I liked about my Ridgeline is the back seat had way more room than my Tacoma did and I had 3 booster seats in it for several years. Not sure how much room is in the new style Ridgeline but mine was surprisingly big in the back seat, I really like the new look of them also.

Can you assure me? I mean it sounds like you budget pretty well.. Let's see.. I was hoping to keep my truck payment around $500 like you said so I just need to score a 40.2% APR, hopefully I can nail it dawg. I had an 02' chick pullin' silverado paid cash for at 16yo sold it 6 years later for the same price, rolled that into my car. Don't worry bro I am only worried about looking cool to the other bros like you at the track.

I currently drive a 2017 GMC Sierra Denali. Got it new in 17 and have put almost 80k miles on it. Not a single issue, these trucks are so well equipped and drive so damn nice.

I’ve now had 2009, 2012 and 2014 Silverado’s/Sierras. I’ve traded them all around 80-100k for a new one, but have never had a single issue with any of these trucks.

When it comes to buying new, you can score some pretty damn good deals. My trucks sticker price was $60k. With incentives and negotiating I got it for around $50k OTD, which is something like $15k off sticker. There’s a ton of mark up in trucks and SUV’s.

I would recommend a 2014+ GMC or Chevy given your budget. You could find one well equipped with relatively low miles.

I am a firm believer that all of the brands have pros/cons and issues that arise from time to time. If you treat them well, they will treat you well right back.

I drive a Dodge Caravan and tow a tiny trailer. The Caravan is the Swiss Army knife of vehicles.

If I was buying a new truck, I'd buy a Toyota Tundra with the 8 foot bed. If you're gonna buy a truck, buy a truck.

Another option, but it depends on how often you ride, rent a truck when you need one.

Had my 2005 F150 5.4 up until 6 months ago. Now it's my step daughter's and it still runs as good as the day I bought it. Custom ordered my 2020 F-150 back in April and received it in July (plants were closed for a bit)... And I plan on running this one another 10-15 years.

Just find something you like, that will serve your needs, and buy new. Make those payments and pay it off... Then keep driving it! Run that bitch as long as possible, a decade or longer, then buy new again. It's a truck, use it. Take care of it and keep using it. I went back and forth on buying a new truck for the past 3 or 4 years simply because of its age, then I'd realize I still like my '05 and it is rock solid, so why have a car payment again? 15 years was finally the cut off for me to make the leap again. That was 5 years of car payments and 10 without one.

Whatever you do get a TRUCK. A half ton at minimum.

I'll pick up a 2030-35 F250 next probably. Depends what I plan on towing.

For work I Bought a 2017 Silverado, V8 extra cab 4x4 with 42K on it for $25K out the door. The boss gave me $25K budget to spend. Blows the doors off of the F150 I had previously. The Silverado rides great, quiet, info link works well with my phone with hands free and tows our 6x12 trailer with bikes and gear with ease. Have had no issues with it. The F150 I had was a pile.It was 2wd, 6 cylinder and.the front end, shocks, ball joints, drives shaft failures, rattled like crazy, poor interior, speakers went bad, was uncomfortable and left me stranded too often..It was the same price as the used Silverado. Love Toyotas and would get a Tundra if money was no object. Youtube has videos on Tundras going a million miles! But for about $25K the Silverado is a great deal! Look for lease returns. When I bought mine the car lots were full of them. Good luck!

Oh yea, also the Silverado has remote start and heated seats. Even though they are cloth, cant beat it going thru our Ohio winter cold to start your truck from the house and it automatically warms the seats before you get in!

We own a landscaping business and buy/use a lot of trucks. While Toyota doesn't make heavy trucks, I have always drove them as my personal vehicles, the reliability is spot on and the resale is like owning a free truck. My wife on the other hand has owned several Ridgelines, while I do not consider them technically a truck, they haul bikes and a small trailer great and their resale is spot on as well. As far as the domestics, piles of shit, they make walking a pleasure. We own/owned Dodge, Chevy, Ford 1 tons and up, all disappoint with their reliability and resale. A Ford dealer told me on a F550 crew cab dump I owned that was 4 years old and had 50,000 miles on it, that the bed on it was worth more than the truck itself when I went to trade it after a myriad of problems.

I vote used Raptor will a 96 month loan. Boom, done.

For real though, I wouldn't count out the 2.7L Ford F-150. That little turbo V6 engine is impressive with 400 lbf-ft and 325 hp. I have 45k on my 2018 XLT 302A and love it.
Regularly get 22 mpg on average, thing is surprisingly quick with tons of torque, and tows just fine. 10 speed transmission is very good as well. Was always a V8 guy until I test drove one of these!

Covid has made prices crazy, but you should be able to find reasonable STX 2.7L models. Ford was blowing them out in 2018. I remember seeing them in the 27k range back then.
