I pressure wash the dirt off my raw steel HGS 2t pipe, then scothbrite then wipe it with oil from the spill oil bucket. Sometimes I use a rim cleaner with oxalic acid that removes the surface rust quite easy, then wipe with oil. But this is one of the worst tasks in the cleaning process.

Your going to want steal-wool to clean you're header pipe. Make sure to wear gloves though, as it can get prickley on you're hands.
