One thing I messed up, tho, and it pisses me off so much that I need to leave it there to remind myself about "past-present-future-reality"...

General Yaeger IS an American Hero.

There...It's fixed.

John Lear knew him well and said tester Slick Goodlin broke the record numerous times first, testing the safety of it before the Air Force would strap in their star pilot. Yeager did attempt an altitude record with a rocket engine on a plane which failed, yet he survived, barely.

Not sure where you're getting your info but don't charnish Chuck 's legacy.

He was THE FIRST PILOT to break the Speed of Sound...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalmers_Goodlin

And Chuck piloted a F105 starfighter to break the altitude record when it spun out of control.

It bothers me that his passing doesn't seem to be getting the news coverage it deserves, at least from what I've seen.

That whole Facebook post seems like sour grapes to me.

Exactly my thoughts. Seems like some serious jealousy rearing it’s head there.

I'd take John Lear's claims with a bit of skepticism... he's a bit of a nut. He's a big believer in some very nutty conspiracy theories (aliens, ufos, secret underground bases, etc.) Here's a link:https://science.howstuffworks.com/space/aliens-ufos/john-lear.htm

One of the most amazing books I've ever read. His life is one of the most amazing ever lived. He was truly an American Hero. If you pick up this book, I guarantee you won't be able to put it down....

Brigadier general Chuck Yeager has died.

If you, like I, value Courage and the desire to push boundaries, you will mourn this man's passing.

I encourage anyone who reads this to Google or YouTube his name.

You will be astonished at what he accomplished.

It is serendipitous that he left on Pearl Harbor Day.

This man's accomplishments are unbelievable, even in the era of the Pastrana/Maddo/Baumgartner/etc.

Take a moment to think of and appreciate the real OG extremist....Brigadier General Chuck Yeager.

Damn it that sucks

"Unqualified and unauthorized"? Yeah, sorry, but that's not how things work. No matter who you are, the mil. doesn't just let you jump in a plane and fly off into the wild blue yonder because you want to. It's a multi-million dollar testbed jet, not a Buick.

RIP, General, your efforts played a big part in America going from the speed of sound, to the moon in the span 22 years.

If I live a life 1% as exciting as his, I will die a happy man.

Some of the men of his era were true badasses.
A different guy, but for those interested Joseph Kittinger (the first man to parachute from the edge of space) wrote a book called "come up and get me"
Really showed the level of not just balls, but desire to push the envelope that so many people of their generation in technology development went to.

I'm old and retired Air Force. Yeager was/is a real American stud. I've met him and can tell you for true...he had no fucks to give. Just do your job.

Having said that, I don't know the real story about the Bell X-1 but I work for Textron Aviation (Cessna, Beech, Bell). I work Special Missions and Defense experimental aircraft. I can tell you for a fact...no military or govt pilot gets into the cockpit of an aircraft until OUR test pilots have wrung the shit out of them. We already know every limit the plane is capable of before we give it to the military to "confirm" our results. That's just how it's done fellas.

RIP sir.

Quite poignant that he passed on Pearl Harbor Day. As a kid born in the 60s (1960), Chuck Yeager is; and always will be, an American hero in so many respects! Most kids my age (me included) thought the greatest thing in the world was to be an astronaut; but goddamn, Chuck Yeager surpassed that goal in spades!

I always heard the the original design of the Bell x-1 cockpit (the aircraft in which Yeager broke the sound barrier), had to be redesigned to accommodate Yeager's huge balls.

Yep I've mentioned that to a few people as well and they never heard of the movie.
Same thing when I mention Chuck Yeager or Howard Hughes, but they know who Pokémon is! Laughing

Godspeed General

I was lucky enough to meet him when I was a kid. We had a ranch near Grass Valley where he lived and he would get his hay from us. My dad let me know who he was and I’ve been enthralled since. Speaking to my dad today I could tell he was just as bummed out as I was. Thanks for the memories Chuck.
