He was THE FIRST PILOT to break the Speed of Sound...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalmers_Goodlin
And Chuck piloted a F105 starfighter to break the altitude record when it spun out of control.
I'll go with what's in the History Records.
Pit Row
RIP, General, your efforts played a big part in America going from the speed of sound, to the moon in the span 22 years.
Some of the men of his era were true badasses.
A different guy, but for those interested Joseph Kittinger (the first man to parachute from the edge of space) wrote a book called "come up and get me"
Really showed the level of not just balls, but desire to push the envelope that so many people of their generation in technology development went to.
Having said that, I don't know the real story about the Bell X-1 but I work for Textron Aviation (Cessna, Beech, Bell). I work Special Missions and Defense experimental aircraft. I can tell you for a fact...no military or govt pilot gets into the cockpit of an aircraft until OUR test pilots have wrung the shit out of them. We already know every limit the plane is capable of before we give it to the military to "confirm" our results. That's just how it's done fellas.
Quite poignant that he passed on Pearl Harbor Day. As a kid born in the 60s (1960), Chuck Yeager is; and always will be, an American hero in so many respects! Most kids my age (me included) thought the greatest thing in the world was to be an astronaut; but goddamn, Chuck Yeager surpassed that goal in spades!
Same thing when I mention Chuck Yeager or Howard Hughes, but they know who Pokémon is!
I was lucky enough to meet him when I was a kid. We had a ranch near Grass Valley where he lived and he would get his hay from us. My dad let me know who he was and I’ve been enthralled since. Speaking to my dad today I could tell he was just as bummed out as I was. Thanks for the memories Chuck.
