Cool bikes. TMs definitely win if you want that “hand-built” look, where craftsmanship counts vs. mass production.

They are hit or miss for me in terms of styling. Some years they are extremely trick looking, other years just a little too busy.

They get solid reviews year after year in the shootouts.

The TM shock is nicer than any aftermarket shock I’ve had, Ohlns included, except maybe a Solva. That thing was really trick. It’s not like an OEM cast KYB, Showa or Sachs, it’s billet, machined and nicely anodized. I can’t see spending the money for the Ohlins option unless you just want to be different, but you’ve already achieved that by getting a TM. These bikes are never going to be mainstream or popular, they’re hand built in a small factory. They couldn’t build enough of them if they wanted to, and it’s not their business model.

My TM is the best bike I’ve ever owned. The thing just makes me happy looking at it. It’s a 19 144MX i ordered new. I loved my KTM but this thing is so much nicer. I’ve got 76 hours on it now and will for sure buy another new one in 2022 when they get new styling. I wish more would consider these bikes. Not a huge fan of my YZ especially it’s build quality in comparison to the TM.

I sold my yz and went to a cr250. Couldn’t stand the sit in feeling on the yz and it wanting to stand up out of corners all the time.
Would love to try a Tm

Simply put, CPR, in the US Nationals ( and I assume SX?), if you don't pay for Homologation, you're not allowed to play.

I've not an accurate idea of the cost - it's probably easy to find - but for a small Importer, it's just not worth the money.

Oh, and over and above that, there is a quantity of bikes to be sold requirement that may well be impossible to reach , I'd say, for any of the small manufacturers such as TM, Sherco and Beta.

But, I doubt it would get them more sales. They won't have a rider / riders that will attract enough attention to the brand - casual fans will never be interested in bikes other than the mainstream, and riders that want / appreciate the 'different', well, they tend to already know about the smaller brands . We , here in OZ, probably have higher TM sales than the USA. But, then again, our tiny markets sales of all bikes, with just 25 million people, is higher than the supposed main US market of California, with around 40+ million people....... it's not hard to find the sales figures for those that disbelieve that.

I've had a fair bit to do with TMs, with mates of mine racing them, and, as a frame maker myself, I can look at a TM, and Truly appreciate their high standards of manufacture. That's how you make an Aluminium frame Woohoo They, to me, are a bargain.

Sweet!

Nice purpose-built 144!

They would need to import at least 400 mx450 Fi and 400 mx250 Fi.

TM built 1200 bike a year, all models all together

Even at 2400 units per year they won’t be building even close to 400 units of 450MXFi or 250MXFi, let alone bring that many into the US. It’ll never happen. Under current rules TM bikes will never be legal for pro SX/MX.

Current one is #7, my first one was in 2002. I’ve owned most of the other brands too since then but keep coming back to TM. This would have been #8, I was supposed to pick up a new 300MX a couple years ago after riding but ended up in the ER that day instead. Love my TM’s!

Thanks. I had a 2017 300MXFi 4stroke, it was a great bike, only thing I didn’t care for is the mega loud air intake and the high deceleration braking at high RPM’s. That bike was a real screamer and soft on the bottom so it was hard to avoid the engine braking, especially being a 2-stroke guy at heart. That was probably the easiest bike I’ve ever owned to go fast on. I’m not a fast guy and could turn the same lap times on my 144 but it definitely took twice as much effort.

I read that their 144 is actually built specifically as 144 and supposedly is the best big bore small more engine available and way better than the ktm 150SX

That 14 144 is a good bike. Everything you got done, from crank balance to the other motor work, made that thing work so good. My buddy has 114 hours on it now!

Such a outdated rule by the AMA. Definitely needs to be looked into. If for nothing more then progression allowing a legit bike manufacturer like TM to involved in pro racing.
I have a 19 250f.

It would be awesome. Also wish the old Husqvarna’s (06-13 era) had a chance in American pro racing also.

NytmaC had a sick, built Husky which were also such cool bikes

Yes, rule should simply be : non-prototype bike from serious manufacturers with no modification to the frame (to prevent works bike) and homologation.

Hypermoto, love that TM!!!!
Does the suspension come with a basic setup like every other bike? Or is it setup for the person buying it?? Like spring rates changed and valving already setup for you???
I’ve always loved the look of the TM’s and yours is sweet!!!!!

Thanks on for the above compliments.

I’ve spent a lot of time on a 19 and 20 150SX and can say the TM for me is a better bike. The power hits different and is much more ridable. And it’s got better suspension, handling, etc. The motor is just so usable compared to the ktm. That’s due to it being more than just a big bore like the KTM.

If you order one it can have the spring rates of your choosing, along with many other options. However there is basic spring rates that TM USA gets for the bikes that aren’t pre-sold. I don’t know exactly what those rates are, but having ridden bikes with stock suspension I can say it’s really good.

My son races a 300 two stroke for Endurocross and some other races. He also has a 144 and it is the most fun bike I’ve ever ridden! It is fast and isn’t too hard to ride for a average 48 year old guy. Can’t compare it to a KTM 150 as I haven’t ridden one, but as good as the TM handles it would be hard to beat.

I’ll also add parts are no issue, I go to TM USA all the time and have seen what they have, plus the parts that we go through. They always have what we need and I know they ship out parts daily.

Our first TM was an 85, it was so far advanced than the other 85’s there was no comparison!

I’m the next couple weeks we’ll be getting a 300 4t to test and see if it’ll be what he will race next year. Have heard really good things about it and are excited to try it.

I also added a picture of what you’ll find when you pull the cylinder on a TM, this is from a TM 300 with about 50 hours.

Awesome!!!! Sounds like it is quite the weapon!!!!!
I really like my ktm150sx but the forks are harsh on braking bumps... Part of the problem might be my light weight 115lbs, but I’ve put the right spring rate on the rear and been trying different things up front...
Anyway, I love the power on my bike, but it sounds like yours is even better, that’s incredible!!!!
Congrats on your bike buddy!!!

What brand rod is in that bike? The OEM rods have a nice smooth finish, that looks like an aftermarket one? unless the 300 OEM rods are different

How is the 300 2 stroke for hard enduro type riding? Does it have similar tractability as a KTM/husky/sherco 300? Or is it more like a bored out YZ 250?

Do the mx models have a counterbalancer? Also are forged aftermarket pistons available? Trying to decide on next years bike.
Two tiny details I’d like to see improved- seat could move closer to gas cap- do away with the plastic piece , and a top clamp with rubber isolation and forward bar position option would be nice. But beautiful machines regardless

None of the bikes feel like big bores. They aren’t big bores. They are purpose built, meaning stroke is different, cases, cylinder, ignition, PV, etc, etc. Not many parts are interchangeable.

Two tiny details I’d like to see improved- seat could move closer to gas cap- do away with the plastic piece , and a top clamp with rubber isolation and forward bar position option would be nice. But beautiful machines regardless
Sit on one and see if your opinion changes. The way you sit the ergos are absolutely perfect. you wouldn’t want to sit any closer to the front.

You can order rubber blocks (i always get solid mount and run contour bars though). Just a preference. And you can buy a Wossner forged piston.

The plastic piece isn’t a design element. That’s how the bike breathes. It scoops air into the airbox. You can hear it when riding.

Also yes, 250-300 are counterbalanced
