It's just a matter of time. When the kids on the KTM/Husqvarna E-50s move up to 65s or 85s, what are they going to ride? Somebody should build a 65 e-quivalent (see what I did there?) and an 85 e-quivalent bike.
If some kid wins a major supermini race on a big wheel e-bike, it will be on!
My kid was on a electric husky 50 all year, then after Lorettas sold it and on normal gas 50's now. The Lorettas class is only 4-6 year old unless something changes. We aged out. Was hoping when I bought it last December that wed maybe never be on a gas bike again for my youngest kid. My plan was to buy the new cobra electric if they have a 7-8 year old class, but cobra is so behind not sure when they will be released.

Also not sure I want to do electric again for him, to only have to get off it to go on 65's.

I sure to miss it though, no maintenance at all, just plug it into the generator. Now I have to carry two gas 50's every we go cause they are always having issues.

Out of the big manufacturers, my bet is KTM will be the first to produce a full sized electric motocross bike. That said, I don't think it will be close in performance to the Alta MXR. Alta engineered a machine that was truly ahead of the times.

I'm just lucky to own two of them. They are fricken awesome.
You really don't think KTM could release something equal to or greater than the ALTA lol

Not looking forward to all of those loud ass generators recharging their silent motorcycles in the pits. Hopefully the manufacturers are thinking about this as well. The Alta guys that I ride with have to charge between each moto. Removable back up batteries would have to be a must.
Batteries having a universal standard (like the ones in your remote) is a must.

BRP bought some of Alta's assets (including intellectual property, patents and physical assets as well). They own Can-Am, Sea Doo, Ski Doo, Rotax and Evinrude. I'm very interested in what they's managed to do with that purchase. So far it appears they are just sitting on it and doing little to nothing unfortunately. I hope I'm wrong.

I do think Bryan is right... For the 1st gen of electric bike from big OEM. I think they will play realllllly safe on the first gen to not scare people away (potential issues with new tech and power wise)

Alta came in with a bang to impress everyone, and they succeeded... In that aspect.

Eclectic bikes just aren't the best right now, and if the companies won't make money, then it's not worth it. I heard that KTM's eclectic enduro bike was dull and no fun to ride, while their 2 strokes are a blast.

BRP has no plan to revive Alta. They only wanted the technology to study on it

10 years from now there will be serious offerings, they will be widely adopted, expanding current pedal e-bike acceptance and usage is laying the groundwork for future acceptance of electric motorcycles.

Keefer said that Honda is a one off engineer creation and not a part of any immediate future plan

I never suggested they would be reviving Alta. I think it's pretty obvious they will not be doing that.

But corporations don't typically spend large sums of money to study something and then do absolutely nothing with the knowledge they gain.

Depends on what you define as “best”. For getting new riders going and providing a platform that can be upgraded with the push of a button as their skills improve, electric is your only option. For getting around certain tracks as quickly as possible for certain riders, electric is absolutely best. For ease of ownership and lack of required maintenance, electric is far and away best. For overall mechanical simplicity, electric is orders of magnitude best.

Now, for doing 100+ mile desert loops, no, nobody is going to be picking electric any time soon. There’s a time and a place just like for every other bike, but for pure fun factor and range or riders electric bikes can suit there’s not even a comparison to gas bikes. I’ve never seen someone get off an Alta disappointed, I don’t know about the KTM freeride but that also looks like you’d have a pretty tough time not having fun on it.

They were already doing electric karting with Rotax before acquiring Alta, they could have wanted to better their technology.

But they actually release some concept Electric vehicule couple months after they bought Alta. I think they certainly are doing/will do something with what they bought and with their knowledge 😉

I’m pretty sure the Austrians are all over this. My guess is 2022 will be a year where we see some more E’s from them.

I would be willing to bet Bombardier will apply what they learned toward an e-UTV. Polaris (their largest competitor in that space,) already has an electric Ranger. I could see Can-Am coming out with a competitor for that. Also, maybe an electric Maverick?
How about an electric Can-Am Spyder? That's an easy one to imagine also. Some kind of in-town scooter?
An MX bike or streetbike wouldn't be first on their list. but why not look into that? I could see it happening.

That’s just an educated guess.
KTM doesn't do much in secret. They typically announce long range plans years in advance. No mention of full sized and no spy photos. Don't hold your breath.

I just hope the next bike has spring forks. My Alta is by far my favorite bike since I started riding 23 years ago. My 2005 RM250 is leaving my stable this weekend because I never ride it. My RMzilla only stays because of the time I put into building it, or it'd be going too. My kid is 5 seconds a lap faster on his electric Husky vs his KX65. Both of us have developed better/smoother skills on the electric bikes and carried that over to our gas bikes. With so many things to work on in my garage the electric bikes are a low maintenance, time saving, blessing!
I hope Yamaha beats KTM to the production line just because of the spring forks, but I'd be happy with something from any company that can just stay in business.

A rear foot brake pedal on both sides would be a nice option to have now that the shifter is taken out of the picture.

Well...if they’re testing them in SoCal “very soon”? I won’t be surprised. They’ve got some “Former GP Awesome-folk” testing allllll sorts of interesting stuff lately and it’s ALL quite impressive.

I’m jus’ sayin’...

BRP is putting heavy development into electric SeaDoos. There are a lot of "no motor" lakes everywhere (noise restrictions, no fuel or oil in water paranoia) and they'd open up a huge market for themselves if they could make a low noise Seadoo.

Your post has so many dislikes, it's the perfect representation of the Vital community, toothless hicks who stand in the way of progress out of fear of change.

I can't wait for petrol bikes to be banned and all you snowflakes will have to experience the brilliance of e-powered dirtbikes.

Or has the Vital forum been infiltrated by a PR firm hired by the oil giants? I know Vital loves a good conspiracy...

I think electric bikes will be awesome when they become widespread. You aren't helping. People don't like being typecast and insulted, and will push back harder.

Well, you heard wrong, then. That bike is a total BLAST to ride, and even though it's not a motocross bike, it can make it's way around a track surprisingly well (no triples or 100' flat landers, of course).

I've got one (I also have a 250SXF and a YZ250F), and I have my own track as well, and when I have my buds over for ride-day, I let them take a spin on it, and every single one has come back with some sort of a variation of the comment, "Well then, there's the future." And is IS the future. The biggest advantage it has is the lack of rotational mass, which makes it feel like a FEATHER even though it's quite heavy. It almost feels like a BMX bike. I'm going to get the new battery for it this coming Spring (50% more power), and then I'm gonna simply ride the wheels off it - because you can. Just lube the chain and GO. The SXF will remain my race bike for obvious reasons, but i't's only a matter of time - this, I know.

One last thing: after your second ride, you no longer need, or even WANT, a foot brake. The brakes being on the bars gives you a perfect comprehension of how big a percentage of each brake you're using. It feels like they should've been there all along. When the time finally comes and the actual transformation occurs, you guys will look back and roll your eyes at how wrong you were.
