Ride on the road right next to the trail. Never understood that.
I have a bike path in front of my house and no road bikes use it, not sure why?

Bikes should stay off the friggin roads that have posted speeds over 25mph. First of all they pay zero road tax so they have no business even being on the road. They carry zero insurance. They can't come even close to doing the speed limit therefore they are a danger to all involved. Plus, with all the people on the phones these days, you'd have to be on a fucking suicide mission to ride the same roads as cars without a designated bike lane. You want to ride on the road with a bike...you should have to pay road tax, have a license plate or sticker, actually obey stop signs, lights and other rules of the road and carry liability insurance...just like a car.

Instead of wishing a him speedy recovery, you make a shit comment and act entitled. Hopefully you don’t hunt.

This the perfect thread to post my opinion...or yours or anyone's regarding how fucking stupid it is (or isn't) to ride a bike on the road. Why is it the perfect post? Because a great MX'r just got hit and people are interested. I'll say it again...it sb law that bikers have to carry liability insurance, pay road tax and stay off roads with speeds posted over 25mph. Anytime a bike a vehicle have a mutual problem...99.999999999% of the time the guy on the bike gets hammered. Stay off the road. Get a MTB.

LOL my 3 registered vehicles and property tax say otherwise. Idiot.

I’m not shocked to see you’re from Iowa. Very stagnant culture out there, cycling isn’t what you corn fed fucks like to do.

Well, that escalated quickly. Oh, I see you're from Cali...just because you and your boyfriend are having problems, don't project your anger onto others. I know what you California "Bois" like to do.

Cyclists should carry liability insurance?
Liability insurance covers the other drivers bills if you, (the cyclists) cause an accident. Then you say, 99.999999999% of the time the cyclist gets hammered. So why should the cyclist carry liability insurance?

Maybe drivers should obey the laws of the road and not hit and run, or drive drunk, stoned, drive unregistered vehicles, or without insurance which that driver probably did. People usually hit and run because they're not legal themselves.

Get well Mike, hoping for a speedy recovery.

Simply calling out stupidity isn’t an escalation. Pointing out facts that you turned a hit and run into a “IT’S HIS FUCKIN FAULT” only further proves your ignorance by continuing to argue. BTW, I’m from So Cal. Your sheeps head still stuck in the fence? We know what you like to do.

I think some of the road bikers have the same intelligence level as the idiot that hit Mike. I don't understand the lack of caution some road cyclist have, especially while in groups. I've had groups blow stop signs forcing me to stop twice in my car while I had the right of way. I don't get it.

I wasn't implying anything against Mike, and sorry if my comment replying to a comment helped start the shit show that followed. I'm glad Mike's ok, and glad I don't have to moderate a forum.

Glad he didn’t end up worse. I hope that driver drives off a cliff, POS.

Glad to hear MA800 is still alive and only suffered minor injuries given the circumstances. Sure hope they catch the POS and string him or her up for a long time. There's no excuse.

On the same note, here's a LINK to a very interesting doco about a cyclist getting run into and killed in Australia on a lonely rural road and the driver not stopping showing it's not just an isolated thing, and how these country cops were able to track down and catch the POS who did it. There is a massive twist to the whole story though. I believe nothing has happened as the POS business is still on the net for all to find.

I love cycling. I really used to despise comments about it “being too dangerous”.
Perhaps it’s because I’m growing older, perhaps more drivers have the ignorant, selfish, entitled attitude of some of the previous posters, but these days I’m not riding on the road very much at all.

I hurt myself on my MTB pretty regularly but I’m less likely to end up under a truck. And for me MTB’s are much more fun.

If I rode in traffic as much as I used to, I’d invest in one of these:
https://www.pushys.com.au/cycliq-fly6-ce-gen3-rear-facing-hd-bike-camer…

I have read about occasions in Australia where someone basically deliberately hit a cyclist who was equipped with a camera, and still got a very light penalty.

A driver killed a cyclist and received a $500 fine. In a country where touching your mobile phone while driving is a $1000 offence, and “speeding” (without any crash) can exceed $1500!

Get well soon MA800

As a guy who routinely rides 15-20K km per year, holy shit Mike. So sorry to read this, literally every cyclist's worst nightmare is getting hit by a car, let alone one going 70 mph. Reading the injury list, one has to think could have been much worse (but we can say that about any crash). Heal up well Mike!

On a semi-related note, I am still recovering from hitting an off-leash dog (in a park that is leash on only) that jumped out in front of me when I was riding on a gravel trail in May. Was doing 30 km/h (18 mph) and took a heavy concussion from a dirt nap, scapula fractures, rib fractures and a lot of soft-tissue damage to my left shoulder. Still can't work out how I ended up so badly injured from this one.

Was the dog ok?
The dog was OK. Every cyclist vs dog incident, the dog is fine. Once years ago in a big Pro/1 criterium a little Pom cross ran out into the bunch and my teammate along with a couple of others hit it. Big crash, lots of broken bones, a punctured lung for one guy, carbon bits everywhere. Dog was fine.

I knew I should not have come back in here. Fuuuuccckkk.

First off, you realize that a lot of so-called road tax is paid for by property tax right? So unless the cyclist is homeless, either by rent or home ownership they are paying tax in some way to road services.

Second, why should I need to carry vehicle insurance? We cyclists are the smallest vehicle on the road, and we are the cleanest form of wheeled transportation. People actually commute to work on bicycles in the civilized part of the world.

Third, the phone argument is on drivers. A cyclist shouldn’t be on the road because drivers are too self-entitled to not use their phone while driving? OK that’s for sure the cyclist’s problem.

Finally, go hang out at an intersection and watch the behaviour of drivers before you get critical of cyclists.

Your self-indulgent view of how the world works is why we as a society are in such a fucked up place.

Another expert in Florida rules of road for road cycling that's likely never lived there.

Speedy recovery MA800 and hope Fla authorities find, arrest and prosecute to the fullest the perpetrator responsible..

Overview of Florida Laws for Cyclists
same-rights-same-rules-01In Florida the bicycle is legally defined as a vehicle and the bicyclist is a driver. Bicyclists have the same rights to the roadways, and must obey the same traffic laws as the drivers of other vehicles.

The driver of a vehicle overtaking a bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle must pass the bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet between the vehicle and the bicycle or other nonmotorized vehicle.

Wow. That is so scary. I literally just got done with a road ride...and saw this.

Get well MA800. And go buy some lottery tickets while you are healing up. When people get clipped by cars going 70 mph, 95% of the time it ends differently.

I guess I am fortunate in that I live in CA, and people are more tolerant of cyclists. Also, I refuse to ride on roads where cars can go fast. I ride almost exclusively on lightly traveled windy foothill or mountain roads. My thinking is the road already has cars going slow, and basic driving is so demanding that people can not be on their phones texting or they will drive off the road. I also ride the same roads all the time, so drivers know me. Finally, I go out of the way to be courteous and wave to everyone I can. If I lived in a place like TX or FL, I think I would find a new way to get exercise.

I never thought of it that way. So true. Taxes from gas and registration pay for the roads. Good points. I like the 25 mph rule too.

Gas tax and other road taxes/tolls/fees pay for around half of the costs (it varies by state). The rest comes from general taxes like property, sales etc..

Speedy recovery Mike !

This reminds me of another rider that was involved in a hit & run - Gaylon Mosier in 1980. He had just won 2 500 nationals that year and was a serious contender for the title,. IIRC the scum that hit him was never caught. RIP.

Phones are the thing that have changed it the most. How many times are u behind someone that u think is drunk swerving all over, drifting into the shoulder only to get next to them and it’s the phone.
