And yep, I have spent more hours than you can imagine reading, emailing and calling people to get the parts that I needed. A swing arm from Washington, a head from Canada, trick bolts from the UK, motor work from California, plastic from New Mexico, powder coater in Illinois and some nos unattainium parts from New York.
I didn't intend to go this far with it, but the build took on a life of its own and kept morphing into something better every time I spoke to someone. And that has been the most enjoyable part.
Every single person I have run across in the vintage / motocross world have not only been so helpful, they have shared their passion and experience with me like I was an old friend. It has been a blast and I haven't even got to the track yet!
And yeah, the suspension is going to cost about what I paid for the bike and seems overkill for a five lap vintage race, but I know once that gate drops the whole "I am going to just take it easy" thing is out the window. I justify the suspension costs by two things -
I don't want crash and injure myself.
and more importantly -
I don't want to crash and dent that tank!
hahaha..
I am hoping to find a used plastic Clark tank or a decent beater metal tank I can race with
And thanks for the paint codes Neumann👍🏼

I now have to switch from the mechanics hat to the painter hat. I bought some VMX paint to match the VMX side panels and fenders - https://www.vmxracing.com/spray-paint-vmx-red-clone-clone-.html?categor… and will paint the tank, wet sand it down to 800 and then clear coat it with SprayMax Gloss 2k - https://www.amazon.com/Spray-High-Gloss-Clearcoat-Aerosol/dp/B00W2D806Y… and then finish it off by wet sanding down to 2000 grit.
The tank has been painted and needs to be wet sanded before the clear coat. This is what it looks like now:
I noticed the cap that came with the tank didn't look right (It had a dull pot metal look and the edges were too squared off, so while I waited for the paint to harden before wet sanding, I chucked the cap up in a power drill and reshaped the edges by rounding them off like the OEM cap and put a polished brush look on it. Not a perfect OEM look, but close enough for the racer tank:
This vintage worm hole I am going down sure is getting deep...
I noticed the Race Tank which is a '74/'75 is much thinner than the stock '76 tank. Hope it fits...
Both side by side
Next week - the real build begins!
Karl's work not only performs well, it is pure art for sure!!!!!

Bike need a longer brake torque arm to bring the backing plate/cable back into range.
Stevie Denton made me a custom brake torque arm. It's longer. Just waiting for it to be anodized and shipped. Then it's race time!
I hope it rips as good as it looks, Kevin- fill us in on any races you've done. Then let's do another one!
