flarider, I respect your opinion on this one, and I don't know Terry at all...nor the agreement on his trophy for his work invested. I was really refering to the irony of a rider (any rider) claiming a guys bike and losing the claim, then getting his bike protested and losing his OWN claim...just sayin Wink
Bottom line...one family was cheating, one was not.
I don't think you have to do anything illegal to get your bike claimed.

Are you SURE you know what you're talking about?? or do I have to read all these pages to see if you get corrected about illegal bike or not. Not trying to be a dick, just asking cause I'm not 100% sure myself

Whether or not this bike was legal was never the question because that question was not the issue. This bike was claimed.

Read the claiming rule in the AMA rulebook. In amateur MX, a bike can be claimed for MSRP + 30%. The owner MUST let the bike go or it's mandatory disqualification from the event and a 1 year suspension from AMA races.

I understand that Varner's time in this bike was worth over $10K + the parts and the core bike. So, MSRP + 30% on an '03 CR85was STEALING the bike from Alessi.

I would rather not say what I paid for the bike. I know it's worth at least what I paid for it to me or I would not have bought it. I would be happy to sell it to the right person because I am not qualified to do it justice. If I can find the right person, I would make them a great deal. Otherwise, I respect what Varner was doing at the time and that he wanted this bike as his trophy enough that it will stay with me before it will go to someone who would not appreciate it. Of course my 13 year old son is absolutely itching for me to let him flog it.

I honestly don't know what the future is for this bike. It will be determined by who is interested in it. I know it's safe here with me for now. I would like to talk with Varner and Alessi before I do anything with it (and that includes even cleaning it up). However, I don't know either of them but would like to reach out to them if they would allow me to do so. I really don't know how to reach them. I have left a message at Varner Motorsports but Terry may either be too busy to check his voice mail or he may be over it by now. I just don't know until I hear from him. It's my belief that he should own this bike. That is where it belongs (IMO) but right now, I'm happy to have it.

At the time of this incident, it was Kelly Blue Book + something like 10%

Way cheap

"Of course my 13 year old son is absolutely itching for me to let him flog it."

DON'T DO IT!! Let Varner have first right of refusal, in case he still wants it - That's who could do it justice.

The Alessi bike may not have much $$ value to the masses, but it's value to me is more than monetary. I think that the story behind it is interesting, funny and sad all wrapped together. Had Mike dominated the pro motocross scene like he did the amateurs, the bike would probably be worth more monetarily at this point.

Maybe when one of my grandchildren are old enough for a supermini, I'll freshen it up and we'll go racing with it. I think that it would be awesome for a Loretta's qualifier some year in the future to race this bike to another Loretta's championship! Hey, who knows, this bike has a story that may not be over quite yet!

wow. sad to hear todd passed. he built a mod 50 for me that was crazy fast. loved the “th racing” graphics that were on it. might have some stickers from those days laying around somewhere. would be cool if i could find them. RIP

The Alessi bike that got claimed at Loretta's 9now my bike) was NOT illegal. The bike was claimed by the Chatfield's. Claiming a bike has NOTHING to do with whether or not the bike is illegal or not.

I'll get out to the shop when this storm passes and take some more pics of the bike. It looks pretty much the same as it did when I posted the original pictures 10 years ago.

Why did you not freshen it up and have your son race that set up? Seems like you thought it was way tricker then your sons?

I tried to find anything on the web regarding Todd's passing or funeral announcements. Does anyone have a link or additional info? Thanks!

Whoever this pdoc guy is or was is a true dick. Go back all the way till page 2 he begins throwing out information about the bike being illegal like it's proven fact and hasn't stopped spewing the lie after 5 pages of people saying it WAS legal, the guy continues to throw wrong information out that a bike can't be claimed unless it is found to be illegal is a totally incorrect statement, the bike was 100% legal (we were protested in every moto the year before that and the years before that) and it was claimed for 10% over market value, it was and probably is still to today one of the fastest built supermini engine at 28-29hp. People like pdoc have some nasty posts in here trying to regurgitate the lie page after page trying to get people to bite that haven't seen the same thing a page before being called out as a lie, why? What's so important to keep throwing out a lie about someone you don't know to try and make people think we are what you say? Gtfo here.

I was standing there next to Varner when all this went down, boy was he PISSED. The bike was proven legal. It's a supermini for God's sakes

Claiming works like this....if I remember right....

1) You must be participating in the same race. You can't race in 125C and claim a bike in 125A.

2) At the end of the final race, you must notify the race manager (referee) your intent to claim the bike. This is during the standard protest period (at LL's, during impound, for example)

3. You must have cash, no checks, no CC. If I remember right, it was 10% over blue book (suggested re-sale). NO MATTER HOW MUCH $$ YOU PUT INTO IT. So a supermini is really still just a CR85 big wheel...totally FUBAR on that valuation.

4. If you refuse to surrender the bike, your license is suspended for a year, and your results for that day is DQ'd

5. YOU MAY counter-claim, have another party also put in a claim to compete for it. Again, cash only. In this event, it's draw straws.

5B ) Multiple parties may put in a claim, then all draw straws. (This is what the factories did in pro racing after Boone and Roeder went on attempted claiming spree's. Roeder did get Marty Tripes' works RC250, after that, rule was dropped in pro racing.

That's it. As far as I know, still a valid rule in AMA amateur racing (Incl LL's and qualifiers) though highly frowned upon and would be a scarlet letter

Mike's SM was never truly "lost"
It was known who had it and as far as I know, Chatfield never hid the fact of where it was...I always seemed to know

Didn't know Heemsbergen passed away, that's a bummer

Didn't he go through a period of claiming and protesting Cobra's?

BTW, if Mike's bike was illegal, he would not have WON that 105cc Supermini (12-15) class @ LL's

Mike WON IT

If he bike was illegal, claimed or not, he would've been DQ'd and results erased

Mike went 6 for 6 that week, all on the record books and added more titles to his mantle
