I know, and Ive been on MT since 2008 and a regular at Vital since 2011 (I think). I've truly never heard of this in any context. Never even heard of the claiming rule. Like I said, my mind is blown. The mini class must have been utterly insane back in the day.
After seeing the shenanigans they've been involved in since turning pro I can't even imagine how shithouse rat crazy Tony Alessi must've been as a mini dad.

I have such a strong mental image of him going ape shit while papa Chatfield was claiming Mike's bike. And Mike is just on the podium, getting all huffy and puffy. Musta been great to have witnessed firsthand.

i don't usually post in 50 year old threads, but if you'll notice, an Adam Chatfield finished about 5th or 6th at the South African Supercross.

Great thread. I heard about this story on here a little. Glad I got to read it & see pics. Thanks for pulling it up. Sounds like those mini days were insanely competitive. 30 bikes, really? Lol damn

The way we always did it, it was 50.00 bucks to protest a guys bike...if after tear down, it was found to be in violation, you own the bike. If it was found to be legal, like flarider stated, theowner got the bike back in a box. The protestor was out his 50.00 bucks. Would you cheat if you knew that just 50.00 bucks was all it would take to tear you down?

I'd love to know where you raced with that setup, pretty harsh and unlike anything I've seen before.
Yeah.... I'm with you on that one.

If dude still has the bike he should do a "go fund me" thing where if he recoups enough of the money he wasted on it, he'll post a youtube video of him pouring gas on it and lighting it on fire.

Just out of curiosity what makes you think that is the bike that got claimed and not just one of Mike's 85s?

I have the "chain of custody' of the bike. Moreover, the modifications that Varner did to this particular bike are unmistakable.

I someone will let me know how to upload pics in an easy manner, I will post up some of the things that can be seen outside the engine.
I actually mentioned this thread to Varner the other day when I was talking to him about a few things on my latest build. As soon as I started talking about it he immediately remembered the bike, even jetting specs and fuel requirements. The bike must have serious compression because he said to tell you to run it on straight VP C12, Maxima 32:1 and a 138-140 main jet. He also said the head has been modified for O-rings and he still has some of the custom head O-rings if you need them. Just thought I would let you know, good luck with the bike it sounds like a cool find.

I have one of mike’s race worn jockstraps from when he was on 125’s that I’ll always cherish. Hands down my favorite piece of memorabilia. Needless to say it’s never been washed seeing how it would diminish the value by at least half...

Whatever went south between the Chatfields and Alessis? I seem to remember them riding together when Adam first came over around 2002.

Any guesses what oldskool paid for the bike and what it’s worth today assuming same condition? Someone asked but he declined to share. He clearly had a personal infatuation with the bike and must have had resources given he purchase 30 bikes for pets for his kid’s race bike. The combined with the fact Tony ultimately backed out of buying it back tells me he prob overpaid whatever it was. All that said, I’d guess he paid $5-6k and prob worth 1/2 that. To be clear that’s based on absolutely nothing at all so i could very well be way off in either direction.

I typed in “found bikes” to see if there were other threads like the case of the mysterious 09 kx450f in Arizona. So in reality thank him

I found this thread again today when I heard that Todd Heemsbergen (mentioned in this thread) passed away this week. Todd was a great friend to us and a great sponsor, as well. Godspeed "TH" Todd.

For anyone remotely interested, I still have the Alessi supermini. I kept it along with my son's last supermini as mementos to our time spent racing motocross.

The Alessi bike may not have much $$ value to the masses, but it's value to me is more than monetary. I think that the story behind it is interesting, funny and sad all wrapped together. Had Mike dominated the pro motocross scene like he did the amateurs, the bike would probably be worth more monetarily at this point.

Maybe when one of my grandchildren are old enough for a supermini, I'll freshen it up and we'll go racing with it. I think that it would be awesome for a Loretta's qualifier some year in the future to race this bike to another Loretta's championship! Hey, who knows, this bike has a story that may not be over quite yet!
