In 1995 I bought a used 1991 CR125 off of a guy that I ended up going to high school with. The next year we were both riding at a mutual friends track - the guy I bought my bike from had a brand new - as in this was the first time he rode it - 1996 CR125. After we rode for a bit I asked him if I could take it for a lap to see the difference between the two. I take off (and I'm a very novice rider at best) and start riding while a group of guys are watching and taking a break. I come up to a decent sized tabletop - probably 60 or so feet - that I had only been jumping maybe 20 feet on, and give it way too much gas on the face and pull a total boner air. I land just before the downside and the front end slams down and I nearly get kicked over the bars, but I saved it. "Ok", I think, "that was embarrassing, but I didn't crash, so no biggie". So I back it down a bit, about half a lap later I go into a right-hand corner and hit a small rock or something with the front wheel and go down. Bent the handlebars, scratched up the pastic, broke a lever, and gave myself my first concussion. The next week at school I apologized profusely and paid for all of the parts I wrecked. I've never been so embarrassed and mad at myself. Time heals all though, and we're still friends to this day. He doesn't have a bike anymore but still likes to ride once in a while. I've always told him that he can borrow any of my bikes anytime, since I still owe him for wrecking his brand new ride!

My kid's first race on his brand new KX 65.
I was working the gate that day so I could help him.

I was parked close to the gate, but I was having to run back and forth to help him be ready on time.

His practice was coming up and I go to get his bike warmed up. Gas on, choke on, it's race ready, 2 kicks and it should run.

Nope, I'm kicking away at this thing, trying to orchestrate flaggers and EMTs over my headset, and it just won't fire....Brand freaking new.

A kid, probably about 12 parked next to us must have seen my panic, and said "Tale the exhaust plug out".

Holy hell, man! Granted, I couldn't hear well with the headset, but I did have over 30 experience at the time....

Nothing like getting the "What a dumbass" look from your 10 year old kid.

July 2017 I’m at a local track running practice. 2nd time at the track with my new CRF450R. My girlfriend (now wife) is with me at the track. It’s Jeff Walker, Greg Durivage, some old guy and myself on a Friday night practice. So me trying to show off my skillz to the GF goes out to lay down a B- class heater. One problem with that....forgot to top the tank off before going out to an open track with two local pros. Made it 3/4 of the way around and ran out of fuel. I kicked and kicked and kicked..... should have bought the e start. Got roosted a bunch of times by the pros (well deserved). And then pushed it back to the truck. Along with my ego

I've got plenty haha but two happened on the one night..

It was at the Kyogle stadium cross, think fairground race but smaller haha but for whatever reason it used to get some big names to race at it.. More on those in the second story

First one was coming back from scrutineering (Do you guys call it tech?) and I thought I'd run along side, jump on side saddle and roll into the pits cool as a cucumber, impressing the pants off the new girlfriend in the process.
I was on the LEFT side, so I hung my helmet on the RIGHT side of the bars put in a couple of fast strides and jumped on, with both legs on the LEFT side, accidentally knocking it into gear in the process bike essentially stopped but my momentum forced me to 'high side' over to the RIGHT side.. Full sprawling crash, new girlfriends pants stayed where they were..

Just go to like 6 minutes and enjoy. I’d say I was so sketch, but that would imply I’m no longer sketchy...

Thought I'd better split them haha
Anyway the second I have talked about on here before but, the bike shop that gave me a bit of sponsorship wanted someone to promote the new RMX 250.. So they thought that during the 'expression session' break that I could do a lap or two on it showing it's capabilities on a track anyway the shop owner said a few times to blow the horn (not sure why) but anyway I'd done the lap as fast as I could and as I was coming up to the finish line jump, I was planning on throwing some sort of heel clicker or early freestyle can can,
It was then that I realised that I hadn't blown the horn at all yet, so I got into the air and 'beep beep' was all I could manage haha with maybe a slight butt whip.. I thought it's cool I'll get another lap to redeem myself but nope they flagged me in, SHIT! I look over and all my mates are giving me sarcastic thumbs up

To add to the embarrasment the announcer thought I was part of the 'expression session' and we had dudes like Andrew McFarlane doing massive whips and future freestyle dudes doin no hander landers and nac nacs and shit, but the winner won on applause and because the announcer played up the 'local boy' angle I bloody won! haha

$100! My shout! haha

one time after practice, as I was putting my bike on the milk crate/bike stand (back in 1980) I was thinking, why did my brother go out to practice with his airfilter sittin there on the toolbox?....it was mine!

Another time I put the piston to my 1980 yz125 in backwards. It was days before some big race (I think it might’ve been one of the 1st SX amateur days at San Diego). My bike ran like shit so I barrowed the engine from my neighbor/best friend....I swapped motors for one race...then later realized my mistake. Still tight with that friend!

I was 17 and showing off for a chick. I had a decent bag of tricks in my arsenal, or so I thought. I went for a no footed can can. I ended up landing with my ass on the seat, both feet on the left side of the bike. I grabbed a handful of throttle and got thrown off the bike. Well, not only did I land on my back knocking the wind out of myself, I managed to ghost ride the bike right into the chick. She went home pissed and unimpressed. I guess the Dunlop tread marks going up her white pant leg had something to do with it.
Glory days.

Not moto, but I was taking a buddy to the range to sight in our deer rifles before the season started. On my RD250. It was about a 40 minute ride through several towns and then up to the state game lands range. Yeah, picture THAT - two 16 year olds, me with a Model 94 slung over my shoulder, him with a scoped 30-06 over his, on a motorcycle. Amazingly, we didn't get stopped. Wonder how that would go today?

Anyway, about 5 minutes from the range the motor seized up solid. In the blink of an eye, at 70 MPH on a back road, carrying guns. Things got exciting for a few seconds until I got the clutch in. Seems I'd forgotten to check the injection system tank for oil. In fact, I'm not sure I knew it had an injection system tank or that I was supposed to check it.

So we walked to the nearest house, still carrying guns, to use their phone (rotary, bitch!) and called my Dad, who came and got us, and the bike, in his pickup. It was an expensive lesson in 2 stroke lubrication, but the ole RD ran even better with new pistons and rings and such. It was my first street bike and I still remember how damn fast it was. My parents never had a clue what that thing would do on a dark PA road late at night.

When I was 13 I got annoyed with the rust on my front brake rotor. So what did my dumbass decided to do? Grab some WD-40 and hose that rotor down. Of course I head out to ride and boy was I shocked when I couldn't stop....

Back in 1992 I was gated next to John Dowd on the starting gate for a moto at The Northeast Challenge Cup race in Lewiston, ME. , right before the 5 sec board came out something went wrong and I released the clutch accidently only to wheelie over the gate and get hung up in it, then I fell over and had the bike stuck on top of me. They had to delay the moto until I got my sorry looking ass back to my my gate. The whole time his mechanic Brian Berry was in hysterical laughter. Turns out my clutch basket was so notched that it didn't disengage.

My crowning achievement in the field of spodology came at Hangtown amateur day a few years ago. I'm relatively proficient at nose wheelies, I love doing them down hills and little embankments whenever I can. After my first moto, when exiting the track and heading back to the staging area I noticed a small downslope, nothing major but absolutely begging to ridden down on one wheel. Even better, it was right in view of the staging area, so the next couple classes lining up would have an unobstructed view to gaze upon my mind blowing display of bike control and brake prowess. Yep, I was going to be the biggest badass that day and I knew it, didn't matter that my forearms were completely obstructed of blood flow and that I could barely feel my fingers, irrelevant right? What I didn't know, was that after starting my stoppy to stardom, a small rock would present itself at a very inopportune time, and cause me to tip forward just enough to set my balance off. So there I was, going ass over tea kettle right in front of the staging area, and absolutely shattering my ego in such a way that it will likely never recover. I also got the distinctive honor of explaining to everyone in my camp how my bike got twisted up when I didn't even crash during the race.

It's amazing how the universe has the ability to slap your ass right back into line when you get a little over the topLaughing

I was down on the track at a SX in 1986, there was this wall before the seats for spectators. I ran towards the wall, put both hands on the top of the wall and tried to do the splits bringing my feet over. Both my boots clipped the wall and I face planted over the other side in front of like 10 000 spectators...they roared with laughter and started clapping. Most embarrassing day of my life.

The looks from the guys at the timing loop was priceless. They hated me. haha

Damn near broke my neck at about 5 mph.

I was putting a sighting lap in on my new 450, just rolling around in 1st-2nd gear. I lugged it up this little table top so slow that my wheels barely left the ground. I blipped the throttle when I touched down and the damn thing flamed out!

I was in a really lazy stand-up riding position, and the bike stalled so hard that it threw my thighs into the bars and lifted my feet off the pegs. The bike was still rolling with both wheels on the ground but I went into a slow motion swan-dive over the bars... Slid down the front fender on my belly, then went into a full-on scorpion on the ground. I remember looking over at the flagger who never got out of his chair and was just staring at me wondering wtf I just did haha.

My neck was sore for a few days, and my ego was sore for a few more!

This one always immediately pops to mind when thinking about dumb shit l've done.

Friday night Ascot and it's practice. I pull on to the track for my two or three laps around the track that they called practice. For some reason when l pull onto track l'm on the oval riding next to the crashwall when for no reason that l can remember l want to look behind me or check my exhaust, WTF, so like an idiot l cross over with my left hand to the throttle and turn to look back.

Of course this causes me to whiskey throttle while cross handed and looking back. The bike hits the powerband and the bike just rockets out from underneath me and sends me ass over tea kettle RIGHT in front of my riding/racing buddy and all out Ascot friends. Damn KX went a twenty yards before it laid down. Raced that night with a fucked up subframe and bent bars but it was the ego that was the most damaged.

Hopefully this makes the cut. Back in the late 70s. Me and my racing buddies Paul and Jeff decided to go up to Broome Tioga in NY state to show em hows it’s done. The van is loaded up on Saturday. We leave really early Sunday morning. When we get there nobody is there. I mean nobody. Maybe we’re just really early. We decide to look at the track schedule paper that’s on the floor of the Dodge van. Are you kidding me, it’s last years schedule. Ok time to hammer down 81 south. We made it just in time to sign up at The Bethel track. The best of times really.

My childhood buddy and I were FaceTiming last night and spent a while talking about some funny moments we have had together riding and racing. We both had a long list of dumb things we had done over the years, and I thought it would be funny to share some of the lessons we’ve all learned the hard way, I am sure we could all relate to some.

One of my crowning moments came in 2003. I was 13 years old, and my father had passed away from cancer the year before. He had handled most of my bike maintenance over the years, so I had a very steep learning curve keeping my bike together.

I had gotten a new YZ125 about 6 months before, my first big bike, and I had ridden a ton of hours on it. I was racing that summer in the 125 Novice class at E-street MX, and was battling it out toward the back of the pack. About half way through the moto, my bike would not move forward anymore. It ran fine, shifted fine, clutch engaged etc. but it would not budge. I pushed the bike off the track in the deep sand, and couldn’t figure it out.

That was until my friends dad came up and pointed out my sprocket had 0 teeth left. I’m not talking about a couple missing teeth, this sprocket was smooth and round as it gets 😂 It was never on my radar to check a sprocket, never even crossed my mind they would wear out. That was an embarrassing moment and a big time learning experience, no doubt.

That poor bike experienced a lot of my trial and errors. Later that year, I took off my subframe/air boot for the first time to attempt to clean all the air filter oil from the air box. Of course I struggled to get the boot back on, didn’t get it sealed all the way and sucked in sand the first ride back. About 5 laps in that bike blew up in every direction.

I could write a book about all the dumb shit I did.

Share some of yours, I am sure we would all get a kick out of hearing some experiences.
e-street no way... do you by any chance know the bridenbakers?

One of my worst moments has to be when I was 7 and riding 60's. I went with my dad and his buddy to race a night race at Marysville. I watched my dad's buddy and a few other guys come off the track sitting side saddle then jump off their bikes. Thought it looked super cool. So I finished my first race and tried doing the same thing. I didn't realize they had put their bikes in neutral before jumping off the bike. So here I am, coming off the track side saddle, thinking I'm the coolest kid at the races on a 60. I jump off the bike and immediately whisky throttled and thankfully my weight drug the bike down easily to the left. I ate crap right next to our truck. Some lady, who's kid was racing with me, helped me up as my dad came running up.

My dad asked me what I was trying to do, so I explained it to him. He laughed, explained how those guys were coasting up in neutral and asked me to not do it again until I got older.

Good times!

I used to live in Carson. About fifteen minutes from it. My grandfather took me there often. They had all kinds of events. Not just moto. Speedway, mud bog races, tractor pulls, figure eight races and demolition derbies as well.
Plus the concession stands where you could buy tee shirts.
I used to save my birthday money just for the tee shirts as a kid.

Learned my lesson when it comes to torquing the rear axle nut to spec on my old '05 RM 250. I used to just give it the ol hand snug and call it good (and I would do this while not applying tension to the chain). Anyway, we had a night race at my riding club....I dropped the clutch coming out of a corner and heard the most horrid crunching sound, and the bike immediately died. I thought I blew a top end...looked at my rear wheel and the chain adjuster bolts were sticking out sideways, chain derailed, and my axle blocks were grinded up. Needless to say, I go by the book now when it comes to torquing stuff.

01ish I was doing a little intermission jump thing at a local night race with Adam Jones. Big stupid jump that I overshot earlier in the day busting my oil filled frame nearly in half on. For the night deal I got out my 250t race bike that I had there for sale. Hadn't ridden it much since getting the 250f.

Anyway, all was going fine on the jump. However, I decided to ride a wheelie on the way back around to hit the jump again. It was hard packed and rough. Pulled a Larry loop out right in front of everyone lol..

99 250 Open/C class hero. (I was 15).

Winter O's, TT day.

Holeshot was against the woods (opposite of big track gate). First turn was a left hand 90. After the turn was a single, then enough room to grab 3rd, nother single, nother single.. None were able to be doubled.

All the fast A guys were wheelyin' over the second one and saving huge time. I watched them all day waiting for my Moto and was gonna holeshot and do it. Well my Moto was the cut off which made me first Moto in the morning.

Morning comes, hot lap comes. I did a start, hit first single scrubish, grabbed 3rd and lifted the front. Absolutelyfuckinperfect. I nailed it just like they were.

Gate drops, 2nd-3rd ish into the first turn, scrub first single, grab 3rd, loft the front....... BOOOIIINNNGGGG, straight to the freaking moon. I lifted way too hard and got the ol ejecto-seat-o-cuz right in the ass when my rear end come up. I dive bombed the next single like a lawn dart, had enough momentum my body made it over the next single.

Probably funny as hell to people cuz it was C class, but I hope they saw me rip it on the hot lap.. lol

I walked it off, got a ride back to the motorhome, cleaned all my knarly road rash and then walked all the way back up to watch SX practice. Sit there for 35-40 minutes, stand up, about fell to the ground because it felt like a knife in my knee. Loosened boots, pulled my pants down, pulled knee pad off and literally watched my knee swell to the side of a legit soccer ball.. Ended up exploding the bersa sack in my knee. Spent turkey day on a sleeping bag outside the motorhome for dinner, all while hollerin at chic's cuz I was ripped on pain pills lol.. 6 months in a soft cast to the hip.
