That would be my guess for the future, another reason to be in attendance instead of sitting at home
Look for some testing to happen at the Monster Energy Cup. I think there will be some radio availability for teams and riders who want to try it.
In a perfect world, there could be some safety benefit to their use to warn riders of an on-track issue.
In NASCAR, it’s common for the rider/crew communications to be part of the TV show. Would this be something that the promoters would like to be able to tap into and be able to use on the broadcast? I would think so.
As far as I can find out, this hasn’t been approved for use beyond the Monster Energy Cup or into the 2020 season.
All you'd hear for 20 minutes + two laps is, "FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, SHIT, FUCK, FUCK, SHIT, SHIT, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, SHIT, FUCK, SHIT, FUCK, SHIT, FUCK, FUCK", etc.
Probably not the insight that the rest of the team wants,
;-)
Pit Row
Team: He's gonna square up the next corner and cut under you
Rider: Leave me alone, I know what I'm doing
Then again, the random layouts each week would almost make this impossible since turns and sections outside of these track markers would potentially be within reach.
I'm not sure about it all though. I'm not at all against it and think it could work out really well but I do think there is reason to worry about riders getting distracted. Remember RV at MEC when he forgot the joker lane and wadded over the next triple over table section? Whether or not that was due to a loss of concentration/focus due to missing joker Jane can be debated but regardless, Imagine someone in your ear yelling to not forget the joker lane. Or if you are already committed to a section or on the face of a take off and someone yells last minute that a rider is down on the landing.
I could see some pretty serious consequences coming from having radios but at the same time, I can see the benefits as well. I wonder how many times in the past a radio would have changed the outcome of certain racing incidents.
Not to mention, it's at the professional level. If you're competing at the top, it's not cheap. An extra $250-$500 is not going to bust the budget.
Besides, it'll most likely be provided to teams at no cost in return for exposure.
