I had one go shortly after ownership of my new to me 17. I was just thankful that's all it was. I've been wrapping mine in plastic before washing, and I dont ride when it's wet.

I do like 809s idea though. If I'm riding in Michigan, I'll pay u to do it to mine. I don't mess with electronics.. lol

Same with my 18 R model that was purchased in Dec. 2017.

Quality is good, but already got a new one in the mail, it got wet after a wash and I tried to clean it with contact cleaner after and broke the plastic tabs AGAIN Silly

It’s so easy man, but say the word.

Take a knife and cut the black casing around the wires down to the steering head. Cut the 4 wires that are not used down by head stay (keep the black/white and dark green long). Take those 4 short wires and electrical tape them individually to seal. Then start at your last good point of casing and electrical tape the entire loom back together up to the top clamp.

That’s where I’m at currently. When my new dummy killswitch comes in, I’ll twist the wire pigtails together, tape separately and then tape together up to the switch.

My 2017 kill switch caused my bike to die 3rd gear wide open off a drop away jump. Thank God it wasn’t off the lip of a jump. It really is crazy that with this many failures, they still haven’t gotten around to solving the problem.

None of the bikes I ever tested did it in Shootout, it happened a few months later.

If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like you're going to twist the wires and tape them to secure them together. I'd highly recommend soldering the wires. Good possibility I'm not reading this correctly, though.

I understand. I intended to add that is the value of longer term testing. A year end review of bikes might be interesting.

This kept me out of the Highpoint National in 2018. I started the bike and road it to the gate for the LCQ, rolled it into staging, time to fire the bike up, and it just cranked forever. Gate dropped and I'm sitting there pushing the start button.

It was an awesome way to cap off my second ever outdoor after a 12.5 hour drive (one way).

I worked on the switch and noticed that a small fall caused a crack in the switch which allowed water to get in. I had no idea this had even happened. I replaced the switch and then covered it with saran wrap when I washed it.

This was a 2018 CRF450R with about 3 hours on it. I bleed red so I just consider this a learning experience.

Agree with this, and get some shrink wrap tubing instead of using all that electrical tape

Wow - funny (not so funny) timing on this thread. I have a 2018 CRF450 with 58 hours on it and this happened to me at Red Bud VetFest this weekend. This was the first time it ever happened on my bike. Washed it after practice and it ran fine for my first moto, went to start it to go to staging for my 2nd moto and it wouldn't run. I ended up racing a different bike for my 2nd moto, then came back and cleaned out the killswitch with contact cleaner, checked the grounds on the battery, all that good stuff. Eventually the bike started and ran fine, I raced my 3rd and 4th motos on it with no issues. Are some of you saying that if this happens once that you can't get it fixed at all, that's why you're replacing the killswitch? I'm thinking I'm going to silicone mine up really well now that I'm back home and have some time to work on it.

No issues with my 17 kill switch.

Specifically what part inside fails? Is it the board its self?

I always bag mine up when washing, been through a 2018 450 and now on a 2019 250, never had a problem yet. I know guys that have tho.

Not sure if this is what your looking for....
https://ride-engineering.com/products.php?d=1&p=ec&pn=MX-LED00-AS&t=cr

Or JCR Speed Shop has direct plug in for the Honda.
Thanks for the mention. To be clear, we sell a starter button with the OEM connector that is plug-n-play. We don’t offer the kill button/map selector because most folks need the map selector and diagnostic LED.

I find all this really alarming as I have a ‘19 250 with about 30 hours and was not aware this was such a prevalent issue. I haven’t encountered any problems as of yet but I’ll surely cover the cluster switch and be extra careful when pressure washing in the future.

What seems to be the root cause of the failures? Is it a poor design of the switch housing allowing water infiltration or is it a crash/tip thar compromises the integrity of the housing which then leads to the failure?

Just had my 2nd one short out......

This time during a moto this weekend at Red Bud’s Vet Fest.

I have tried everything. On this last one, I took it apart new and conformal coated the circuit board, and sealed the enclosure with silicone.

Has anyone converted the ‘smart’ killswitch to a conventional dummy one? Or know how? I’m complete fine not having launch control or map options.

What kind of conformal coating did you use? The stuff we use on LEDs makes a bead like texture on the top and for the switch I could see that causing problems. I'm just interested in what you used. Thanks!

Had this happen to my friends 18. Had less than 5 hours on it. All I can say is he was anything but amused when everyone had older bikes running and this was his first new bike that he had purchased

For what it’s worth, I have a 2019 250 with right around 20 hours on it. Had a small tip over that destroyed the first kill switch. Couldn’t get a new one shipped in time for a local race, so just ran with it. No cover on the kill switch, washed it, started it right after and it ran fine....not using a pressure washer though. Hose with spray gun and bucket with soap

Oh, and when I ordered the new one from the local dealership I noticed on the parts microfiche that the original part number was slashed and replaced with a new part number. Maybe they updated the part because of the problem? Not sure. About 5 hours on the new kill switch and hasn’t shorted on me yet, and the first one was fine for 15 hours

Hmmm....interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I'm considering just purchasing a spare to have on hand. If it fails at a race or even an open practice, it'll have paid for itself.

I think I spoke to soon when I said I had no issues with my 19. Just rolled 30 hours and won’t start. Starter clutch works prefect, but it will not crank the bike over.

It started after I washed it and changed the filter, but as soon as I touched the throttle it died.

Blah (I hope this is the issue).

Well, got it all buttoned up today. Terminated the 4 wires that weren’t dark green or black/white, and soldered those 2 wires to the new switch.

Works like a charm. Also shrink wrapped and taped the wire for good measure.
