I agree. I don't want to pay an extra $400+ to any dealer just to put on a front wheel, bars and check the fluids. I can do it all in 15 minutes myself.

I'd rather give them the $400+ in parts for the new bike or gear.
A $400 setup fee is probably $350 in profit.

Your $400 in parts or gear is maybe MAYBE $120, if they charge you retail. But I am sure you would scoff at that...So their profit would go down to what $80? If they are lucky.

No, I'm saying I'd rather get something for my money. If I'm spending an extra $400+ I want it to be on parts and gear, not for some dude to spend 15 minutes putting something together that I have to go over anyways.

I understand they need to make money but not 400+ for a set up fee. I could set up the whole bike in less than a hour or two. They price price gouge people thinking they don’t know anything about bikes. You think it’s worth 400+ to get handlebars, levers, tires, and some basic fluids? I don’t think so that’s for sure. They even charge a set up fee on used bikes. I doubt that reset up a used bike lol Maybe go through them to make sure everything’s good but that should just happen when buying a used bike anyways they shouldn’t charge people a set fee for checking a bikes condition

$400 is a bit salty, that is for sure. But, you are completely missing the point of my last post. The setup fee also covers the other costs that go into putting a bike on the showroom floor.

Do you own a commercial property where an 18 wheeler will stop for deliveries?
Do you have a forklift to unload all of the crates at your house?
Do you have someone on standby to unload crates not during business hours? (Happens all the time)
Do you have sufficient room to store unopened crates?
Do you have the means to remove of, and dispose, of all the crate material?
Do you have time to inspect every unit for cosmetic damage, and then fill out the necessary paper work when there is damage?
Do you own the basic toolset to properly setup a unit?
Do you own the basic skill set to properly setup a unit?
Do you have the ridiculous insurance required to be a dealer for new units?
Do you have insurance in case one of your employees makes a mistake setting up a unit?
Do you have the OEM fluids on hand to top everything off?
Do you have a showroom to present the bike?
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.

There is a lot more than you could ever imagine that goes into running a dealership. They aren’t so expensive because they want to be, they are so expensive because they have to be.
then it shouldn’t be a setup fee it should be a keep us running fee lol it makes people feel ripped off when you say you need this fee for a set up but it’s actually going towards 20 different things. You don’t go to a car shop and pay a tire disposal fee only for it to be used to buy tools and other stuff. it should be used to dispose of tires right? when you charge someone a fee it should on be for what your saying it is for. I shouldn’t have to pay 13,000+ for a damn dirt bike with a msrp of 10,000

Welcome to the world we live in. So maybe next time you’ll realize why the dealer does not want to knock any $$$ the price of a new unit. You would laugh at the profit margins dealers work with. It is a wonder why dealers even want to be in business.

Calling it a setup fee is perfectly fine, aren’t all the steps I listed required to set the bike up for the customer? A magical KTM stork does not just drop off new units at a dealer. There is work involved, lots of work.

And newsflash, a tire disposal fee isn’t always used for tire disposal $$. Welcome to the way the world operates.

Ya, I understand that.

Unfortunately for me, I can't afford a new bike anytime soon anyways. So really my opinion doesn't matter. It's a discussion and we all have differing opinions.

After other dealer fees are thrown in, the last thing I want to do is have them add another $400 for setup. That's all I'm saying. When my sister bought a bike a few years ago, I watched the price go from $8600 up to $10,700 because of setup fee, dmv fee, other dealer fees and tax. I get tax and dmv are just there, but a setup fee on top of other "dealer fees?" No thanks.

I purchased quite a few bikes in the crate every year. Your higher volume or high level dealers will ship them. The lower level or volume dealers like to use the "Freight and Set up Fee' to make extra money. They also don't like to tell you any rebates at the time, so they will double dip. Call around and ALWAYS check the current rebates a manufacturer is offering so you don't get screwed.

Wtf do you do pay for all your buddies bikes too? Good god bro thats sweet

Lol I understand you have to pass along some fee to the customer but I shouldn’t have to pay for ever step the dealer makes that’s why they buy bulk to cut cost you act like they are getting no profit from these sale that’s bs I have 6 of the same dealers within a 20 mile radius I think they’re doing just fine. And the tire disposal fee is for disposal of the whether or not they do that is on them but thats what your giving them money for. So if they don’t then there just lying and doing bad business such as these dealers.

Okay now that I've read this I see where you are coming from, but there is an issue with this. I'm not sure how it is where you are, but out here at some dealers we are charged what is written down as "dealer fees" for X amount and then a separate setup fee for X amount. So the way I see this, not only are we charged the dealer fees that should contribute to the things you've listed, but we are also being charged separately for the setup of the bike that took at most 1 hour to complete.

I don't think either one of us is wrong because some dealers might not charge those other dealer fees. I think we are both right in the situations we know.

Profit on a new MX bike is about $800 depending on model. That's IF you can sell it at full MSRP. Then you also pay flooring on it because there aren't too many dealers that shell out full invoice to manufacturers for bikes. So, dealers basically get them on credit. After about 90 days, if you're lucky, flooring starts to kick in. That's about $150/mo the dealer pays to Wells Fargo to "finance" said bike. Add that up after it's sat on the floor for 6mo to a year because some cheap fuck MX rider doesn't want to pay MSRP. POOF, there goes the profit and you're left with the little you get from "fees". Again, place your displeasure with the manufacturer, they're the ones that set their prices.

I'd really like to know the percentage of guys that pay MSRP vs less than MSRP.

I believe the majority of people buying bikes pay MSRP. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, not the case at all. More than not, they're getting steep discounts. You have big, multi-line dealers shipping them all over the country at slightly over invoice pricing while the manufacturer looks the other way. That's why the majority of your smaller dealers are closing up shop or trying to keep their head above water by adding additional fees.

I would pay full MSRP but then like everyone is saying you have a dealer fee set up fee etc. I would love to pay the 10,000 but not the random fees that they come up with because they don’t understand marketing and how to move bike quick enough. I shouldn’t be punished because the dealer uses credit to get these bikes and then let them sit for months. No other business runs this way but Motorsport dealers but cause they know they can get away with it. Cause where else you gunna go buy a new toy? sure you can make money doing this but wouldn’t you rather make the customer happy take a little less and have a return customer and good word of mouth marketing about your business. Instead of people trying anything in there power no to deal with you????

You didn't specify what brand we're talking about but i think that it is next to impossible to buy created KTMs and Huskys because the dealer has to "activate" the ECU in some way, otherwise it will stop running after a few hours?

correct on the four strokes, 2 strokes (at least the MX ones) do not need to be activated,

Which is weird to hear because most guys I know and most customers at the shop I used to work at all paid MSRP. I'd definitely like to see actual stats for it. I'm sure all of us would be surprised in one way or another.

Did you see that dealer that had fire damage? They are selling bikes at bargain prices that have cosmetic damages, so if you don’t mind polishing up a frame and buying a new seat cover you can get some sweet deals. They had a 2019 CRF 450 for like $6,000.

Automotive industry runs the same way chief, so it isn't only the motorsports industry.

The only fees you should be paying are freight, setup and a doc fee. Other than that you have title fees and taxes. If anyone is tracking on amy additional fees beyond that, walk away.

And you're not being punished at all, sorry you feel that way. Like I said, margins are minimal so they have to keep the doors open. You think most dealerships just have a couple million sitting around to buy all their inventory each order period in cash!? Whew, doesn't take a rocket scientist.

And there is no customer loyalty, their gone the second they find that bike they want $100 cheaper down the street. When you build relationships, you get repeat customers. The guys coming in asking for best price, blah blah blah are a dime a dozen in this industry.

Every repeat customer I ever had was about a relationship, never price. Many of them I call friends to this day. You just can't seem to get past the stigma of dealerships trying to rip people off. Are there shady dealers out there!? You bet your ass. But, for every shady dealer there are 10 out there trying to do things the right way and take care of their customers.

Which is weird to hear because most guys I know and most customers at the shop I used to work at all paid MSRP. I'd definitely like to see actual stats for it. I'm sure all of us would be surprised in one way or another.
I think so too, I don't know a single person that's paid MSRP for a bike near me.

The only fees you should be paying are freight, setup and a doc fee. Other than that you have title fees and taxes. If anyone is tracking on amy additional fees beyond that, walk away.

I never understood the bitching and going to another dealer 30+ miles away over $100. Had a buddy that drove an extra 50 miles each way just to save $100. I couldn't believe it! You just wasted your time and gas to save $100 on a bike.. Not worth it at all to me.

I agree on the relationship aspect as well. I love the relationship/friendship we have with our dealer.

You understand you are buying an off-road pleasure vehicle right? Dirt bikes are not cheap, haven't been for years.

I really do not want to come off insulting as you just seem like a young kid who has no idea how the industry, or the world, actually works yet.

The whole world runs on credit. Do you really think dealerships are fronting all the money to stock units? That would be an unattainable business motto, sans for a few billionaires. Would it blow your mind to know that car dealerships operate on credit? As well as Lowes, Best Buy, Home Depot, Dicks, etc. etc, etc. It is not bad business, it is good business....Have you heard of the term overhead? You think a dealership could survive with millions of dollars in stagnate units?

You need to wait until you are in the real world before you start passing all of these judgments....All of your business philosophies are wrong. Credit makes the world go round, and companies are in business to make money...Smiles and good vibes do not keep the lights on. Good customer service goes a long way, I agree. But, you are quite far out of touch on what it takes to run a dealership. Putting a picture on Facebook does not sell units....

Dealerships do not owe you anything, if you want the bike...earn it

Looking at YouTube videos of people working on bikes, I would not sell people a crate bike either. Most people don't know a screwdriver from a spark plug. 98% of them never heard of a torque wrench.

So when you buy a car when the msrp is say 15,000. Do you then have to pay for them to have the car sit there? Do they charge you a set up fee? Do they charge you a dealer fee? No you don’t cause that’s on them they don’t pass that to the customer and even if they do that put it in the msrp they don’t want until your signing papers to add a few extra grand for fees they think is called for. All I’m saying is if the bikes msrp is 10,000 I shouldn’t be paying upwards of 13,000+. That’s why I made this thread to find a cheaper way. I’m not trying to get a dirt bike for free but I also don’t wanna pay for a set up fee dealer fee etc I don’t care what you say nothing else works like this. Your example for instance you don’t go to bestbuy and have to pay a Best Buy fee etc right? It’s the msrp + tax. It’s all included in the msrp. When I go to Home Depot I don’t have to pay a flooring fee for the wood sitting there along with a home depot fee do I? So please explained to me how this is the same as a Motorsport dealership?

Yes, you do. You actually pay MORE fees buying a new car.
