The majority of people who bash Harley’s can not afford them. It’s like criticizing Ferrari’s, Porsche’s etc because of maintenance cost even if they are inferior than a American made Corvette for a fraction of the cost. I’m 60 now and have ridden/owned almost every bike ever made and nothing can compare to the feel of a HD...except a Indian, which is my other street bike. Reliability? I’ve NEVER had a HD break in me...try maintenance, it’s a wonderful thing. Pirate suits? I wear KTM jackets, sweatshirts and Tees when I ride mine for good visibility....that reason and also because KTM’s are number one off-road ??

So easy to see that you are blinded by your love for these terrible machines. "nothing can compare" really? "except an indian" LOL so another shitty bike? genius.

Could not have said it better myself. I love it when (mostly ignorant and angry) older people make ridiculous blanket statements about millennials. They want to ignore, or probably in most cases, are not aware of all of the macroeconomic trends that are in effect for the younger generation. The cost of education is increasing at 8 times the rate of wages, yet, it is just "lazy kids" not putting in the effort lol. Also, I truly believe that most people who make these uninformed kind of statements are not privy to the fact that the millennial generation includes people who are now 38 years old...

"Back in their day" you could afford college tuition and housing with a part time job at Taco Bueno and still have spending money left over. It's been factually proven with minimum wage vs college tuition statistics from the 70's and 80's. Now you have to be top 2% of your class with a scholarship, go in to copious amounts of debt, or leech off of mommy and daddy's pension/retirement to pay your bills.

I walked that part time employment road for 9 years to graduate and saved myself TONS of money, on top of getting government grants, to help offset costs and still left with a big bill to pay that I'm still paying. I drive a 17 year old S-10 single cab I got in high school because my car payment goes to paying back loans.

We're raising families on "entry level" wages at 33 because there's no corporate growth because old fuck Jerry hasn't earned enough for his $2mil 5 bedroom dream home he can retire in and die in 5 years. And then they have the gall to turn around and blame us for being poor as dirt compared to them but never giving us an opportunity to earn more. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Jesus.
Dude seriously? Im tired of people taking out loans for school and then complaining that you cant make it because of payments. News flash, debt keeps you broke!

A BSMET at my local college costs ~$20,000 for a 4 year degree. Do it smart and work while you go to school. Its not rocket science. If you cant come up with $5000 a year to pay for school youre doing it wrong.

Hi. Millennial here. I work 50 hours a week, bought a house when I was 22 solely off of my income and support my wife and daughter. I’ve purchased several motorcycles in adulthood without financing or help with a single dollar from anyone. I drive a stick shift Toyota, wear Levi’s that fit me well and am cool with gay people getting married and folks smolking pot.

Blanket statements and assumptions suck and so does this thread.

Fellow millennial here. I think it’s cringey when people talk about how old they are when they bought their first house like it’s some kind of honor badge or flair they can pin to their life costume. With that being said.....

Power to you for taking care of business like a man. However being offended by someone generalizing a generation with humor to the point of validating yourself by posting your life resume/tinder bio is VERY millennial-like

I did laugh my ass off at the original post because it was hilarious.
Hi Jeff. Your mom paid for your truck and apartment for years into your early 20s while you went to hardcore shows and hung out with young girls.

Don’t try to pull my card for using a handful of specific statements to make some counterpoints about this dudes unfunny jokes.

What can compare? Name a bike please...I’m listening

Some plastic Jap crap? Go buy a verago that will deprecate to next to nothing in a few years and let me m ow how you enjoy the experience . I buy 1-2 year old HD’s and they are worth money when it’s time for the next one. And once again I will say any of you who talk about the reliability are just plain ignorant. The new models are not your oil leaking machines you wish you could afford

A nice bit of nostalgia for those who yearn for the days before millenials when people were tough as nails and hard-working, with men being exemplars of rugged manliness.

Ah gotcha. A two year school that has one Bachelor's program without a posted curriculum, and has yet to graduate a class. It also sounds like the program has yet to be accredited.

This is a pretty atypical offering. You are advocating the low cost of a degree program that doesn't even fully exist yet. It sounds like it could potentially be a great offering for some, but to frame this as, "Well why doesn't everyone just..." is pretty disengenuous.

I wish I could find me some millennials (or Gen X or Z) with HVAC, UPS, generator, mechanical, electrical, fire system and security system technical skills. Go to school for that. I'll start you at $30 an hour and you'll be at $40/hr in 2-3 years if you have good communication skills, attention to detail, and self-discipline. In 5-10 years you can be the Chief, and then take my job when I retire. I could care less about a college degree.

I don't like Harley's either. Had one, great bar hopping ride, but the AMF years were junk. Now I'm just a very slow Power Ranger on my CRF, or my "old man's bike" DL1000 on the street.

We've got 5 kids, 12 to 32. So far the 3 that are gone have stayed gone. 2 to go. I agree it's not the generation, it's what they are taught at home, and the expectations set.

I think it's about that per year here for a Bachelor in Science. School debt is still considered "good debt" but I think that is subject to you finding a job and working in the position you received your degree in. My wife has school debt but got a degree in a field that is highly in need which she fortunately loves. I think a lot of people that struggle got degrees like Business Marketing where everyone and their mom is fighting for a limited number of positions and end up working retail or food industry to make ends meet. I went the blue collar route and luckily it's worked out for me thus far but know all about the college stuff from my wife haha.

I'm surprised no one has related this back to the Moto world? Change in this sport is glacial.

Considering the 2 year program thats been around for years is $10,000, its pretty reasonable for the 4 year one.

My point is this.. theres community colleges all over that charge a fraction of the price. They charge so low that you can still work and go to school without taking loans out.

*Broad generalizations follow. If you're a boomer making 40K a year doing manual labor and working 60 hours a week you're not Harley's target demographic anyway.

Of course a boomer in charge of the company would think the problem is with us. Do they forget about cash strapped millenials that went in to a destroyed workforce ruined by greedy boomers in 2008? His generation created the situation my generation had to walk in to and now they're blaming it on us! LOL!. My generation put our lives on hold while the boomers bailed themselves out and the repercussions were passed down to us... a bunch of entry level workers with little to no assets being asked to help rebuild and "just do what we did" in an economy that changed decades ago.

Reasons why my generation doesn't care about those pieces of shit.
1. Student Loan debt
2. Medical Bills/Health Insurance
3. Underpaid entry level jobs created by Boomers after 2008.
4. (see 4) You now need a 2 income home to afford childcare costs and bills.
5. Overinflated housing/rental market.
6. Overpriced cars/trucks/SUV's catering to the Boomer market.
6. No room for corporate growth because the high earning Boomers stack cash instead of retiring and passing the earnings down. Due to increased quality of life they'd rather work until they're 70 so they can afford lavish shit like a vacation home.

Get back to us when we're 50, all the Boomers have retired, and their over inflated salaries free up some money for the rest of us.
Boom !

Wow, your looking to hire me! I’m a Journeyman Electrician(started in low voltage fire and ended in high end access control) , Journeyman Signalman( electrical and mechanical systems for the railroad). Also am a Certified Welder. Spent years wrenching on motorcycles and can rebuild anything blind folded. Also I am very detail oriented as you will see if you find one of my bikes in the builds section. Plus I’m a millennial so I’m still trainable.
When do I start?? Whistling

60yr old wanna be hardass, proves my point exactly.

And no, we aren't one big happy family because most Harley guys talk shit about anything other than a Harley...ya know 'merica made. Harley's are not 100% made in the USA.

I've had Harley guys flip me off before because I was riding a Japanese bike.

Here's a quote from an article regarding where Harley's are made: "Harley plans to shift some production of bikes intended for European markets to facilities in other countries such as Thailand, where it’s building a new factory."

Thailand Smile

The human race is a rare breed (only one that I know of!). I'd rather hitch my horse to that cause.

...the last time I checked, Ferrari and Porsche are not blaming the Millenials for their slumping sales. They know their target demographic and it ain't Millenials. They market to their target demographic successfully, as their numbers show, which is what Harley should be doing. If your target demographic can't use your product it's about time you start making a new product!

Often, a person needs to think outside the box if you can't find a job "in your field". I have a PhD in philosophy. I got that degree knowing full well that academic jobs were exceedingly scarce, but the graduate degrees were fully funded with scholarships, fellowships, and teaching assistantships so I treated grad school like a job and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Once I finished, I did teach for a few years, but when I got sick of the life of an adjunct professor - with the shitty pay and lack of job security - I took a job doing taxes. I took plenty of on the job training, developed specialized expertise in agricultural accounting and tax, and parlayed that into a career with a big 4 accounting firm - without any formal education in accounting or tax. A philosophy PhD who does farm taxes sounds odd on the face of it, but I was willing to be flexible and apply my logic and critical thinking skills - which are the most highly transferrable and widely applicable skills one could have - to another field. One needs some adaptability, intellectual curiosity, willingness to start from the bottom and put effort into development, and then a more general education can take you almost anywhere. Without those qualities, it is quite likely to take you nowhere, but that is nobody else's fault.

As an aside, I once read an article by a philosophy professor who got sick of his job and quit to become a mechanic, opening his own small shop. He argued - quite persuasively - that a philosopher's skills are not very different from a mechanic's. They are both problem solvers, but the mechanic has the extra demand for manual dexterity.

And no, we aren't one big happy family because most Harley guys talk shit about anything other than a Harley...ya know 'merica made. Harley's are not 100% made in the USA.

I've had Harley guys flip me off before because I was riding a Japanese bike.

Here's a quote from an article regarding where Harley's are made: "Harley plans to shift some production of bikes intended for European markets to facilities in other countries such as Thailand, where it’s building a new factory."

Smart guy. I have Harley’s, KTM, Indian, Triumphs and CRF’s in rye garage. When I ride my HD it’s usually with my Moto shirts on because I’ve been into Moto much longer than street bikes. Idiots like yourself group all HD owners into wanna be gang bangers who flip off other riders because they aren’t on their brand. Open up your mind/eye and educate yourself on who owns/rides various brands of bikes. What some people are saying in here is like grouping all MXers as being a bunch of redneck racist, since it is a 99.99% white sport/hobby. So are YOU a redneck and a racist because you ride a dirt bike?

I came out with 25K in debt. Not a lot compared to my wife. About 3/5ths paid off. I got paid ~10/hr, 35 hours a week making about 25K a year and after rent, bills, groceries, gas, books, equipment for my degree, etc I was lucky to keep my credit card at a zero balance. Stayed at about -$800 annually. You literally think, working for 25k/yr, that I could have squeeze off 20% of that annually and still have money for savings or emergencies? You're out of your mind dude.

OH, and then you graduate and come out in to a workforce that wasn't hiring (87 applications and 1 interview 13 months later) at the time and you get to keep working your part time job, with student loan payments due, all while trying to figure out what you're going to do with your life if someone doesn't interview you soon. There were times all I could afford to eat was JELLO for a day or two because I got it for free. Yes, JELLO. Never asked for a handout. Never begged. Never went to my parents for assistance. I wish I had you around to show me the way. Sounds like I just tried to hard.

I'll put it to you subtly...if HD is such a great fucking bike, why is the majority of their revenue from clothing/branding sales? If they built the world's best bike, they'd sell. They went bankrupt once and were bailed out...now they'll probably go under again. Honda sold what...20,000,000 bikes last year worldwide?? How many did HD sell...250,000? HD is struggling to stay afloat while Honda last October had a 23% increase in sales. Somehow HD is screwing up and heading for bankruptcy for the second time in 25 years and it's the consumers fault they aren't buying their bikes? You must be fucking joking.

Whistling

Got an $850 million build under way now - slab for building 1 will pour in June. 660,000 square feet, 50 MW. I should be hiring late 2019 or early 2020.
