Pw50 $439 new in 1981. Today that would be $1227. You can still get them things for less than inflation out the door. So really can’t blame Yamaha for the economy here. They keep manufacturing these things and we don’t even factor in the change in labor costs either. So to me they are keeping it right in the affordable price range to where it almost hurts the company to continue to produce.

By the time he was 9 he'd had 2 concussions and a bruised spleen, and it wasn't much fun anymore. He lost that fearlessness, and didn't want to race. So we stopped for a year+, and now he's 12 and we are back at it, mostly for fun, doing local races just for the rush of a gate drop. Neither of us care where we finish, as long as we try, have fun, and ride safely.
Bought him a new KX85 last Fall - KTM/Husky way too expensive, and every used 85 I looked at was a ticking time bomb. $3850 OTD didn't seem unreasonable, although Mom might not agree.
Saw a kid at PIR last night, maybe 6, with a TC50 that probably cost more than my 450. Damn it was pretty, but $$$$$ too.

Been building the KX60 I bought for $700 for my 9yo who's short for age while still on a pitted out CRF50. Cylinder was wearing through the chrome so ended up swapping his CRF for the 2nd KX60 yesterday. Came with a spare stock cylinder, ported dirt track cylinder, V Force, FMF system and a few other parts. Stooged me on the low pipe and 80 swingarm when I got there already sold. So we stripped the parts bike yesterday which had a very near new piston in it oddly?? dug through my spare gasket kits bin and found a KX60 original spares kit so new rings and little end bearing and gaskets and back together with new those and the stock cylinder and the V Force, the standard exhaust with NOS packing I'd picked up for other bike, had my boy strip off the crappy decal kit and sticky goo, clean the plastics, I disassembled the carb and cleaned through, checked the jetting with FMF recommended which it had already, cleaned the airbox and put it all back together with the help of my 9 yo. Started it up with a few kicks and it sounds like mint new KX60 with that NOS packing, just like I remember them from when I was a kid. Like tinny sharp sound.
Now my boy has seen inside a 2 stroke, a carby and the jets and had to read the pilot jet for me lol, knows the fundamentals of how 2 stroke works looking through the reed port, seen the difference between a heavily ported with additional boost ports bored in and stock cylinder, helped with repacking a silencer and the difference between mat and ready made, as well as everything I've done on the build up including spoking and truing. Not saying he can do all that stuff but he has a good idea and learned about the life of an apprentice cleaning off those those plastics yesterday lols.
I'll put him on the parts bike today for his first ride on a clutch equipped bike with a throttle stop I put on top of the slide giving him about 3/4 throttle until he learns throttle respect for this bike, and if he loops it or trashes it learning to ride this peaky 2 stroke, it doesn't really matter. Came with some spares plastics and even radiator.
Once he's got the hang of it, I'll tidy up and sell the parts bike for about $1000 and should have his good bike ready to go. All up this rebuilt bike will cost me about $1500 with a lot of NOS, tyres etc. Do you think he would have more fun on a $6000 bike? We arn't racing, yet, so he doesn't need the "extra" performance.
And while he's enjoying his rebuilt KX60 and growing some, I've already picked up an 07 KX65 with new cylinder and top end after seizure done by local shop, fresh plastics, near new tyres and an Ohlins rear shock for $1000 to start the next build project.
Now I earn good dollars but am also a tight ass and prefer myself also not to get to far into debt to keep up with the Jones. It's still riding and learning and family time and that's priceless to me.

Being in the military, he was not a high paid guy so a new race bike was not expected but very, very appreciated. My daughter started on a $350 Z50 and now she is on a KLX110. New or used means nothing to kids.
Most people don't understand how temporary small children are and you are building the most important thing to them, a happy childhood memory.
But $4K+ for a minibike!? You can buy a new KX250F for $5500. Just get them that, instead! He/she is going to have to jump from an 85cc to a 250cc anyway, right?
Just so many wrongs here... Our sport is screwed.
So it actually costs almost the same to make a 65 as a 125. So they end up barely making any money from minis and it really ends up being to establish early brand recognition since they have the same parts, r&d, labor etc. The idea is get a kid to like yamahas early, hell buy a lot of yamahas, same with KTM...
Yamaha made the 65 to sell more yz250fs later on, same with KTM and everyone else.
As a side note, the boy did good today with the clutch and shifting. Loves that little old Kawie and couldn't wipe the small from his face. You could see the adrenaline sweating out of him from those first few runs up the track and back, with a real power band to get used to
If someone wants to buy a bike for their kid to rode around the back yard on there are fun bikes that are cheaper that will fit the bill.
I have a ktm 50 and a yz 65 in the garage and those bikes are trick. The yz 65 has all the same parts that my yz250 has. Fully adjustable suspension, disc brakes etc, they are trick
We were out at a ride park today and there were plenty of kids getting around on ttr's and klx's but they are not in the league of race bikes.
