There's a photo from Arlington that shows his transmission vent, maybe with a puff of smoke? and it is way low under the linkage.

I was on the floor at the corner before the finish line at Houston, and it was not clutch IMO, I know what a slipping clutch sounds like. IMO opinion he figured he was already out of it and would rather have someone/anyone else beat Webb so handed him a position.

Kawasaki had run an oil cooler for years, not now. Hmm.
They have generally run the cooler during the summer, but not during SX.

I seem to remember back when Bayle was racing the 500 class, he would go through a set of rear brake pads every race. I’m thinking I remember reading that he did this to load the rear suspension or to limit wheel spin, or something like that. I can’t remember for sure, but this talk of Tomac using the clutch like he does reminded me of Bayle. Does anyone remember hearing this about him, or can confirm that?

They got it off of one of Bayle's works motocrossers. Apparently he was so heavy on the rear brake that
they had to make some mondo calipers for him. So yeah, your recolection rings a bell.
Absolutely true. They also created a carbon fiber air scoop for the rear caliper.

Not sure if I’m being trolled...
I’ll assume not. It’s a class of drag racing. Basically a full-body, short version of a Top Fuel dragster. 8-10000 horsepower. The clutches slip for the first third or half track until they fully engage so the power goes to the ground instead of spinning the tires. Literally hot enough to fry eggs at the end of a run.

I’m used to seeing Top Fuel in reference to the top dragster class, and Funny Car for the top full-bodied class, but not a blend of the two names.

I’m familiar with their clutch setup. Smile

Back in the day I did some reference photos for an artist friend of mine who did amazing t-shirt art. I shot car pics of Ormsby, Amato, Muldowney, and Prudhomme. When I stopped by Don’s shop, Larry Dixon gave me a tour of the car’s layout and controls. That was before he started his driving career...he was the engine bottom end guy. Smile

Steve... this one was on his practice bike at Glendale, so Kaw may have been testing them to see it they would help.

Oh, gotcha. Yes, I’ve heard them referred to as both. I’ve always used top fuel with funny car as there are also top alcohol and other versions.

Those cars are incredible.

Up in NorCal it was a rite of passage to race Friday nights at the Sacramento Raceway. moto bowl. It was right next to the drag strip and sometimes ran in conjunction. Going to a moto race and seeing top fuel dragsters, nitro burners and crazy shit like rocket cars was beyond words when you're 10-12yrs old.

Kawasaki took his valve cover AKA Helmet off and just inside the right ear they used a small Phillips screwdriver and made a slight adjustment in the pressure valve.

Go to Firebird Raceway in late January. No press/cool guy status needed. Standing 20 feet away from a top fueler on a pass is an experience for sure.

Technically it is a "Top Fuel" class it's just not commonly named as much. The Top Alcohol classes carry that naming in front of both Dragster and Funny Car models. while it's not common to call it a Top Fuel Funny Car, it's not technically wrong either.

Technically it is wrong to the NHRA guys even though they run the same fuel and in the NHRA classes it called "Top fuel" Which is the dragsters and then just "Funnycar" . The NHRA faithful are even bigger weiners than us old MX guys Cool

Nitro Funny Car!

Went to Mile High Nationals every year when I was younger. Even did the high school drag races at Bandimere. Good times!

Funny. I raced some Nationals back in the day myself and know more than one former champion because I used to race with them. Some I ride with every now and then. Not such an unusual thing is it?

And not unusual at all to suggest that many riders use/used the clutch technique people are saying Eli uses. I.E. modulating your speed with the clutch and holding the throttle constant. It actually works well.

I don't see why the statement of who told me that interests you so much. It is not some insider secret info like Nerd suggested he had. Lol.

If I tried to hype my statement by tossing in those words and broke VitalMX SOP I apologize. But I don't plan to drag the guy who told me that into this thread! Smile

IIRC last year? they made a change after a few races to the ride height and put more weight on the front, and his results instantly changed for the good. Perhaps he has long desired the same changes to the '19, and MW got in the way of that. He looks comfortable now, probably at home eating a pizza and taking a nap.

Kawasaki had run an oil cooler for years, not now. Hmm.
So from what I could find, standard front geometry figures for KX450 are:

2018 2019 Difference

Rake = 28.2* - 27.6* - 0.6* steeper
Trail = 127mm - 121.9mm - 5.1 less trail
Wheel base = 1496.06 - 1485.9 - 10.1 less wheel base

Running the 20mm axle reduces trail a further 1mm to 120.9mm.
But that's all based on standard clamp and bearing offset, as well as swingarm length and chain set length, so there's a big * in here too.

For comparison:
2019 CRF450R

Rake = 27.22*
Trail = 116mm
w/base = 1473.2

Just wondering because lots of great opinions from some of them, I see Donnie Hanson quite a bid and he has some interesting incite on today's racing and Mark Barnett also and he scared the shit out of me when he bombed the Lakewood track with me riding shotgun in his rental mini van in the dark. I don't think you would be dragging anyone into anything because its a effective way to control the power output by using the clutch that I don't think a lot or riders know about. Now if they were taking about a riders girl friend that's a different storyWink .

PS that's one of the cool things about working at Vickery Motorsprts back in the day is you get to know a lot of the hero's of the sport,Damon Bradshaw was in last week and is still a really down to earth guy. I am lucky to have gotten to meet other sports stars to like Terrell Davis, Steve Atwater, Mark Jackson and a bunch of others, Mortorcycle's tend to bring everyone together.

Yes, those guys were amazing. When he told me to try riding that way I had never even thought about it! I doubt most riders would. It works great and I really think you can ride faster but it is tough on your clutch plates!

Of course, Eli just needs a clutch to last one race!
