Which bike is fastest for motocross?

Hi all,

Firstly i just want to say that i dont want to start a war between 2t and 4t. I currently have a 2017 YZ250 2t which i bought in December last year and for a 16 year old i thought that buying it myself with money id worked for was a big achievement for me, it has all carbon fibre parts and alot of goodies on it. Before anyone says anything ive been riding bikes all my life and they get maintained to the highest possible degree by myself as all the work is done by me weather its a top end rebuild etc. My question to you lot is that when i start college after my GCSE's this September im thinking of financing a YZ250F as ive been told 4t are now alot more competitive than the 2t. I mainly race hare scrambles as an *A class rider and the occasional MX race but have noticed most of the bikes are 4t in motocross nowadays. Ill be keeping my YZ250 2t no matter what but was wondering if a YZ250F would be a good move for MX.

Any advice or comments would be appreciated,

Regards,

Rob

My advice is this.

Youre just going into college and want to finance a $8,000 toy? that 2 stroke is going to be perfectly fine and cheaper to maintain and rebuild. Youre not going to be more competitive on a 250f. Throw a flywheel weight on the yz you got and it will make it easier to ride. Use the $8000 to pay for school. Of all the situations there could be to finance a motorcycle, this one is pretty bad.

4t rules in MX and GNCC and Sprint Enduros. 2t's are fun and cheap and pretty close and become the preferred choice in tighter enduro and Extreme races where lifting the bike is required. Unless you get a Beta 2t which has upheld 2t honor Smile against 4t's in Enduro GP. Enjoy.

College in the UK is not the same as college in the US, I have no idea what it's US equivalent would be. But yeah, there's seems no point in getting another bike when you have one that's perfectly adequate.

Over here in the UK we dont pay for college or education hence why i would be in the position to finance a new bike. The dealer said it would be around £100 a month or something which is about 3 days a weeks wages. Ive never ridden a 4t and was just kinda wondering why do people ride the 4t over the 2t?

Because a 4 stroke 250 is faster than the 125 two stroke. The 450 is faster than a 250 two stroke. Thats why.

Wasnt aware you were in the UK. I still dont like the idea of a kid in college financing toys like that regardless if its “free”. Im just guessing.. but working a part time job and paying $100 a month doesnt add up when you already have a paid for bike thats perfectly fine to ride.

Nah im from York in North Yorkshire. When i say 'free' i mean its not like private school where you literally have to pay for school. College is free to attend too apart from pens and pads etc etc but that still leaves me enough room to finance a bike if that would be better for MX.

Find a friend who has a four stroke and go ride theirs. It should be pretty apparent why the majority of people can go faster on the four stroke. I am sure I will get blasted for that statement there, but it is all about tracking and comfort.

I bought my YZ250 in full hence why i can afford to finance something new in a few months. My YZ250 tires me out on a MX track but in harescrambles and stuff like that im fine with. My buddies YZ250F ive ridden once on a MX track for a lap and i wasnt as worn out. I work for my father so i guess i get paid more than the average kid at my age at £8.50 an hour.

Ah nice, York is one my favourite cities in the UK, beautiful place. I really wouldn't bother with finance mate, your yz is fine for motocross. I financed a bike before and it isn't worth it, you end paying more and it feels like your paying forever. There's plenty of people who win races at club level on 2 strokes up and down the country every Sunday.

Yeah it’s a good city. Like you say I might just rock my Yz for a while as it is as fun as it comes. I’m wanting to go to college to become a mechanical engineer so maybe in the future a 4t addition may be a good idea to learn the ins and outs of a 4 stroke properly. Thankyou for your advice it is much appreciated. Rob

Not worth it. From a performance perspective they both have pros and cons. It mostly depends on track conditions as to which one is "better" but it's really six on one side half dozen on the other. If anything the 2 stroke may be better just for the fact that you might get better starts.

I wouldnt be financing anything until youre above 20/hr. Sounds like youve made your decision already. Hope you enjoy the new bike

The old saying is.. only borrow for things that go up in value.. never borrow for things that depreciate.
Im in Oz. A 250f will set you back about 12k. You borrow 12K and after a few years, you still owe 8K, but your bikes worth 6K and you will end up paying 15K with interest.
Stick with your 2T 250 and enjoy it. If it wears you out.. train harder and sort the suspension. Its a competitive bike. Have a look at Ryan Villapoto last year riding a YZ125... He screams on that thing.

Cheers,

If it was me I would have both. But I currently have a CR125, CR250, CRF450 and a KTM350. I don’t currently have a 250F but only because I can’t decide if I want a Yamaha or a KTM and I haven’t figured out a way to talk the wife into another bike.

You can ride a 250 2 stroke in the 250 class in amateurs so it still does beg the question why.

Somebody is “literally paying” for you go to school. It’s just not you at the moment. Going in debt for a motorcycle is using emotion instead of logic and long term outlook. If you can work while going to school, just save up the money.

Because College in the UK is where you go after High School, and then on to University, which is what you think of as 'College'.

Its £9k a year tuition plus you living costs, my daughter is in the hole for £40k for her 3 years which she has to pay back plus interest, and they sell on the debt and ramp up the loan,

Personally i would nail down a good used 250F so you have a bike for each, but for me i would run the 2t.. we have a 250f and a 300 2T , and i ride the 300 , the 250f just makes noise and doesnt go .

Get a 2 year old 250f. They are dirt cheap and mods and suspension usually already done. But definitely get a 4 stroke. They are so much better to ride and the 250f is a blast.

Moto gp bike is fastest easy. Crf 230 would handle better on a mx track though....should do a mx comparison between the 2.

Unless you plan on racing for money....that YZ is all you'll ever need. The 4t is easier to ride but not "faster". A big bore kit and dial in the suspension...you will be as fast as you will ever be. Your bank account will be happier as well.

"hence why i can afford to finance something"

The irony of this statement is that you finance something because you can't afford it. I get it though, I was young once. I financed my first race bike in my early 20's and regretted it for the next three years.

Stick with your current bike. Agree on the fly wheel weight. Get your suspension top notch if it isn't.
You are a sharp young man it sounds like. Best of luck in school!
Payments suck.
