I think last night's format made for exciting racing, BUT...

I watched / listened to practice and qualifying yesterday. The top 18 went to the night show, plus four from an LCQ. No one that watched just the night show (TV or app) saw 23rd on back. If you didn't qualify, your sponsors got no TV time. All those 23rd to 40/44th guys would have to tell potential sponsors it is likely your company name would not be on TV.

I don't think that is a positive for the sport, though the format might make good TV.

What are your thoughts on it?
Agreed. It wouldn't be great for privateers. If they stop showing up because of this type of format, the fields might be a bit on the short side when injuries start piling up.

Isn’t it insane that you can be a professional athlete and be the 25th best in your respective sport and struggle to make ends meet? I know it’s because our sport is small, but it’s just insane. 25th best doctor in the world? Millionaire. 25th best engineer? Millionaire. 25th best MLB/NFL/NBA player? Millionaire. 25th best golfer? Millionaire. 25th best tennis player? Millionaire. 25th best lawyer? Millionaire. 25th best scientist? Millionaire. 25th best SX racer? Struggle to make ends meet for a few years to live your dream. Give it up. Then search for a middle of the road job, probably with some hardware in your body you picked up along the way.

Well I was sure to specify SX there because I didn’t want to get into the whole comparing series deal that always occurs. 25th best obviously one of the guys battling on the bubble for the LCQ week in and week out. Unless you wanna throw some of the 250 guys ahead of some back of the pack 450 guys.

Get rid of the 250 class for supercross only, combine into one class. There is so much money chasing lights titles it’s unreal. Quit trying to spread the wealth out and let those top 25 guys make some real money. 3 20 minute Motos each night. One premier class.

Welcome to professional sports. If you're not good enough, go get a job like the rest of us. Stop wasting "supporters" money to go get 8th in the LCQ for 5 years and never make a main.

Ive been saying for a while we dont need privateers in 450 SX. This is the premiere, highest level of dirt bike racing in our country, we need to fill the field with Factory riders. You wont see privateers walk on in any other premiere sport.

Make the 250 class a stock class and let Privateers rule the Lites, otherwise just run the 250 class all year long and call it what it is, instead of calling it a feeder series.

You will say it will cost jobs to make the 250 one coast, but those jobs, rides, sponsors, and dollars need to go to the 450 class if the 250 is really a feeder class.

I much prefer to watch Triple Crown over both of the prior formats they have tried.

Just show the LCQ's and try to watch a privateer during the day on the crappy NBC GOLD app if it doesnt crash on you.
So, when Reed or DW15 are/were privateers, they shouldnt be allowed to compete, even thought they qualify? No different for them or any other privateer, right?

You're from the same town as Ryan Breece who finished 9th in the LCQ. Does that have anything to do with your opinion?

SX is the pinnacle of offroad motorcycle racing. F1 is the pinnacle of car racing and limited to 20 drivers. There's plenty of lower formula's and series for youth and money backed drivers to go but the pinnacle of a sport should not be open to everyone. That's what lower series are designed for, to weed out the lesser talent. In fact, most motorsports series have an upper limit of 20-30 at an elite level. NASCAR is a misnomer with 40+ but not all those entries are there every race. Many of them are just part timers and pay to play drivers.

Well I didn’t “thumbs down” the post but I do not agree with where he went with it.

25th best? What about the 40 -250 riders from both coast they are better? Or the hundred or so riding different series that are better? So to be realistic you are talking about the 150th or so best. Now you can’t compare it to careers like Doctors, engineers etc, society cannot function without those professions, we can function just fine without SX...that comparison makes zero sense. Compare it to sports/hobbies that are in the same league as SX when it comes to TV ratings, popularity amongst the general population. Now you are comparing it to sports/hobbies like bowling, badminton, volleyball etc.

So now ask the question do SX payouts compare to sports like badminton, bowling etc for the 150th ranked competitor?

Risk factor? Not relevant when it comes to making $$. There are thousands of auto racers, sky divers, bike and motorcycle racers risking their lives every day who make nothing.

How many other big money professional motorsports tailor the event to accommodate "privateers"? Would nascar make sure I get tv time if I show up in my wifes camary sponsored by Joe's Chicken Shack and try to qualify? Sorry but save the privateer thing for the outdoor nationals not supercross.
I'd be your number 1 fan!!

Exactly. NASCAR has start and park drivers who add ZERO to the entertainment factor of a NASCAR race. F1 is a great example of only letting the elite drivers compete in the top series. Half of the field at a SX should not be out there

This. MX/SX is more akin to a outdoor recreational sport like downhill mountain biking, snowboarding, etc. There are not a ton of people making big money in those kinds of sports. Also, the money in "dirtbike racing" is spread out pretty thin worldwide given there are only a handful of companies that make bikes.

F1 is no saving grace though. The Venezualan government was throwing $50 Million in backing for a "Visit Venezuala" ad on the rear wing to any team that would give Pastor Maldonado a seat. Max Chilton at Marussia had a rich dad. Lance Stroll now, literally, drives for a team owned by his rich father. Fernando Alonso even had financial backers. Schumacher got his start in F1 because he brought a tire deal to Jordan and they needed tires.

I'm ok with that though. If a team wants to sign a rider based on financial incentive and not proven results that's their prerogative. A faster rider can still enter and beat them and earn a spot somewhere.

If they can qualify, sure they can race. Doesnt mean we have to watch them qualify at night.

Reading is hard.

So no one cares that you need a calculator to figure out results or that the guy with the most points can boringly throw the third "race" and still win?

Ok, then Unsure

Yes! No offense to the guy, but look at somebody like Alexander Nagy. He has entered 79 Supercross races, and best I can tell has never qualified for a main event. Is he actually making money at this - or at least breaking even? Or does he have income from someplace else and this is just a hobby?

He does get $1,000 or so just for making the LCQ.

Yes it sucks for the privateers but the racing was awesome. However, when there is a qualifying field it’s open to who ever can afford to try and meet the credentials any spot is fair game. Its done in golf, tennis, beach volleyball, surfing and many other individual sports and I believe you can try to qualify for the Indy 500 if you got that kind of coin. Thinking Jeff Ward may have somewhat privateered a car into indy one year.

To do anything other than that the sport would need to be completely re invented on how you fill the gate and keep it full for the “show” or “shows” with the fastest 22 riders in each for the night.

There needs to be a feeder system and futures is a step in that direction but it will take some revising/time for it to pan out where someone can be racing futures one week and be pulled/bumped up to the “show” the next.

If there is a bigger plan, I like it and if not I like that too. See you in SD!

I think 99.99% of the fans show up to the races and tune in to the TV to see the stars of the sport, not the privateers. It’s no different than any other sport in that regard. It’s a professional racing “business” and they need to make it as entertaining as possible. Watching riders who are 5-10 seconds off the pace is not entertainment

The split 250 series is a joke. Not near enough talent to break it into two series. Hopefully one of these days they will combine it like it should be.
True on the 5 seconds off pace but the often make the ending interesting in followcross

One possible SX solution........

Triple Crown Premier 450...THE Big Dawgs/Stars

250 Support East/West....250 4-stroke AND 250 2-stroke....maybe the privateers in that 23+ group might get some exposure and make a little cash

Plus maybe 2-stroke East/West since Japs no longer support smokers except Yamaha and would never allow 250 smokers in with 250 4-stroke support class

Could keep East/West to make it more affordable for up and comers, do well there and get the factory gig

Are there football forums out there where fans are pleading with the NFL to make time on each broadcast to show players that were cut from the teams and walk-ons that weren't quite good enough to ever make it?

Just wondering.

Bingo. I think our love of the sport and connection with it is blinding people to how effing boring the program is watching the lappers for 3/4 of the program.

Like oh yay LeBron james beat whoeverthehell nonamer in 1 on 1 and made it into the night show. Wow so surprised....thats what it is watching tomac or roczen each weekend qualify into the main for 3/4 of the program.

Not exactly. But pro football already has a well televised feeder system: college football. And within college football there are different levels of competition. But the playoff system there is heavily slanted towards the premier programs. There IS conversation amongst some who would like to see some of the lesser programs (Central Florida this year) have a better opportunity to participate in their championship system.

I think the OP is correct.

As to comparing our sport to the NFL or others...? These racers (privateers) are paying all their own expenses. There's no "MINIMUM BASE SALARY" (NFL)...etc. They need sponsors. Sponsors are paying for exposure.

Triple Crown event make for good and exciting racing; but, they do pare down the field for "the night show" to 22 from 40. Those 18 guys that're left out of the show are the privateers.

Wow, aren't you pleasant. God forbid someone love this sport enough to ride as a privateer.

Don't worry, racers usually hang it up by 30 or so. So if they aren't the next Weston Peick privateer success story, they'll have the rest of their lives to grind away at ordinary day jobs like you and me. Only with way cooler stories for the kids. Cool

Here's my perspective. Take someone like Scotty Wennerstrom. I grew up racing 125's when he was on 80's and he was one of the top kids in North Texas around here. He's been trying to qualify for a 450 main event for over a decade now and never has. But every Saturday night he's back out there again going for it. That's respectable. He's not giving up. BUT, if you expect me to have a shred of compassion for any sort of financial situation he may be in you're delusional.

We shit all over Ronnie Ford for not belonging there but there's dozens of guys who fall in to that category. Scotty was 4 seconds off the top 18 pace at Anaheim 2. Often times if he gets a start outside the top 10 in a LCQ he doesn't even try. THE DREAM IS OVER. STOP WASTING PEOPLE'S MONEY. I don't blame him though. I blame the people who support him that continue to give him a shred of hope where there is none. They're just delaying his future outside "chasing the dream".
