1. Lackey. US MX is where it’s at largely due to him.

2. McGrath. He took the sport to levels never before seen.

3. RC. Changed the entire game with his training and made the sport not so fun anymore for the athletes.

4. Stewart. Made the scrub just part of the normal lap in a race.

5. DeCoster. Spearheading the US team often. Also brought KTM to the promise land here in the US where it appears they’re here to stay.

Influential today?

Hard to say.

But it looks like most of the responses are geared towards most past impact. If that’s the case, there are 3 people that have to be at the top of any list, probably all tied for first in my opinion.

Edison Dye
Bruce Brown
Steve McQueen

McGrath, Decoster, Mitch, RC, Reed.

Stewart isn't even part of the sport anymore so he can't be influential.

David Coombs

The guy that runs Feld. Whoever that is.

The guy that runs WADA.

DeCoster.

The guy that runs VitalMX. Tied with the guy that runs Youthstream. I mean, look at the uproar he created by
extending his series.

Well, in the history of the sport, i can easily say Mcgrath was the most influential rider ever ! He really tooks the sport to an another level of popularity hands down. People who even doesn’t care about MX/SX have heard about Mcgrath back in the days

And if we speak about nowadays, i would say right now Roczen is the most influential rider. I honestly thought when he moved to Honda and started crushing the field, being outspoken, changing the game by wearing a suit and so on, he would have take Mcgrath place. But his arms injury set it back

Well, I can’t give an order but most of the guys mentioned above defiantly fit the profile. But. They say, that Mr Reed sells a ridiculous amount of product, so that has to count for a bit doesn’t it? And based over 20 years, well there you go....

What about Pastrana? I think from a motocross bike standpoint he has been very influential and brought about a lot of publicity. Not to mention rode pretty damn good at the MXDN after having not raced in a decade plus..

If we are talking about top five influential people now. How would Steve Matthes not make someones list. I think he has the loudest voice in the industry.

"Influencing" what?

Influencing change to the sport?

Influencing an athletes performance?

Influencing customers to buy products they endorse?

Be more specific.

If "influential" means who has the most influence in 2019 in terms of effecting change, growth or just plain 'ole how things are done, the field is narrowed down to those actively involved in the sport right now. I'd say RC, DeCoster and Payton. In terms of riders, I'd go with Reed.

The guys that run motorsports for Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar are 1,2 & 3 no question about it. Think of where SX/MX would NOT be if they decided they could no longer reach their target audience via this sport.

After them it is the main guy(s) at Feld and then Decoster and Coombs.

FIM and WADA assholes are a big plague but not truly influential.

McGrath, Decoster, Mitch, RC, Reed.

Stewart isn't even part of the sport anymore so he can't be influential.
You dont see Stewart every single lap when these guys scrub? Even the Euros HAVE to do it now... He changed the way sx/mx is ridden, still to this day. All your time used to be made up in the corners, or in sx corners + whoops. Now if two people are running the same lap times whoever stays lowest gains the advantage. In sx your jumping 50% of the time. Making up time on every jump adds up... a lot.

Carmichael changed the training aspect of the sport where now you have to be a top tier world class athlete to even be competitive. Yea it took the fun out but it also took it to the next level.

McGrath brought it to the mainstream and made it so you can be a star and an sx racer. Thats why he was called showtime. You can be a pretty big name as an mx racer these days like Ken Roczen thanks to McGrath.
