They interviewed the guy who is Serena coach and had the 'coaching' call made against. Said it's the first time in his career he's had a penalty called on him for that and anything he was doing is pretty standard issue for most any other coach in the stands.

If it's true, I could see getting pretty heated about that when you're in a big finals match and the official makes some bush league playground call.

But you would also think an experience pro would know how to put it aside and focus and not come off the rails about it.
FFS...so there's a rule against it, everybody does it anyway, and it never gets called until now. Nothing professional about it on either side except for the level of pay and lack of ethics.

I have NEVER understood cheating at anything. Wait...having an epiphany...(kinda feels like a massive bowel movement). People cheat for money and fame and since EVERYONE is doing it...it's not really cheating. But even if they are the only cheat that just makes them smarter.

My old Grandpa used to tell me..."if you'll cheat-you'll lie...if you cheat and lie-you'll steal...if you cheat, lie and steal-you might as well be a politician".

Serena hid in a panic room in her estate when the drug testers knocked on the door. Professional tennis has some of the most slack PED testing protocols and punishments in international sports that it’s almost a joke to watch them play a match.
Had to read up on that because it happened so many years ago. Sounds like the tester didn’t knock on the door yet, and given that it was about 6AM an assistant thought it was an intruder. Bizarre deal, but definitely understandable if you thought that you had locked gates and someone just shows up on your security poking around.

the particular umpire is known to be hard on the rules, and has penalized Andy Murray, and Rafa Nadel before,

seems like the sexism comments are just bullshit,

Also sounds like the rules are just a bit different for the Open than for a regular WTA event. WTA events allow this 'coaching" from the stands.

Serena got fined a total of $17K for the mess. Seems a bit low considering that she got paid around $1.75M for finishing 2nd.

No, hoping is the correct term. Not sure I get the thunder part, I was absolutely correct about your actions. Your disappointment is a bit much, though......

Takes home 1.75 million. Gets fined 17,000. She really learned her lesson. She won’t be sassin’ no more umpires now !

She sacrificed everything. Hopefully Nike puts her in that campaign.

The ref just seems like a huge pussy that got his ego hurt after seeing the video. She was pretty respectful when talking with him and he still ruined the entire game.

She was also respectful in the after game press thingy. Poor Japanese girl is crying and Serena is telling everyone to stop booing and stay positive.

I see it the other way , Serena ego got damaged as she was getting beaten by someone she thought she would beat , and she took it out on the ref ,

Serena is a legend in women's tennis. Great , great champion. I was disappointed in watching her throw a fit though. She showed poor sportsmanship , which after the 3rd strike , she started throwing blame at other people. She will always be a champion in my eye's , but gawd dang that was kinda cringe worthy. And congrat's to Osaka. Very gracious with her win , and I see her becoming the new face in that sport. One badass player!

I think she should have been penalized for the racket smashing only, having all 3 of those infractions was ridiculous (imo).

Her coach admitted he was signalling her , and calling the umpire a cheat or a theif in most sports gets you a penalty , most team sports it will get you sent off ,

She was losing this game before this all went off , and she has a history of doing this on the same situations

fair enough. Maybe it's because I grew up playing ice hockey and they don't call every little thing that happens but I like the hot heads that throw their racket and such, it's entertaining. Grinning

The umpire was sitting up there being reasonable. Never lost his cool. What else is he to do to get her to shut her entitled trap ? She was acting like a 2 year old.

Her fault. She had every opportunity to just STFU, let it go and play the game but she chose to escalate the situation to the point that there were consequences and then cried foul on the refs part while blaming everything but herself.

I just watched the presser. I was really impressed until the end. Then she had to stoop to the oppressed woman card. Too bad.

It's all about the developmental stages. She was acting like a child. If I was a professional athelete making millions of dollars to play tennis I wouldn't have acted like that. She was roid raging

I was going to post that too....heard that on my drive in to work today. It certainly sounds like they were pushing for a racial agenda basing it on sex & color discrimination.

I watched it happen live, not because i'm a tennis fan, was just waiting for the Iowa football games to get through the 1st quarter on DVR.

After thinking on this for awhile, I think Serena is to blame. She just kept jawing and jawing - and she wasn't being inquisitive about the penalties. She was being an asshole and the judge did his best to stay professional.

I think it's embarrassing the way she acted and I 100% agree that it totally stole the moment (in all the wrong ways) from the winner

Yep, people are completely ignoring/misreading the intent of this cartoon. Every cartoonist embellishes the physical characteristics of the subject person.
This is purely about the dummy spit, you're looking to be offended if you make it about anything else.

It’s so overblown, people are being ridiculous... nothing like minstrel show depiction... It is depicting a black female athlete display horrible sportsmanship after being caught doing something against the rules. Downloading movies is illegal, even if your Mum does it... and by definition, a cartoon is a drawn characateur... otherwise we’d just be watching the actual film of her tantrum.

All about trying to protect future earnings, don’t want those pay checks to dry up when she retires
