Not only is it Des, I still miss the Trophee Des Nations with the 4 man teams. Not the Trophee Des nations they have now in the spring.

What if we all start calling it the Tour of France instead of the Tour de France???

Or the "Tour of Italy" instead of the Giro d'Italia???

Or instead of Roger DeCoster we call him Roger the Coster? Or Ken the Dycker? Marc the Reuver? Jeremy from Horbeek?

GTFOH!

Motocross: the British invented it, the French named it.
Why would you call it the Tour of Italy? At least Tour of France makes some sense, because why would English speakers actually care about the meaning of the word they are translating, when they can just use the same letters, even if it means something different in the original language.

Tour de France means Lap of France. Giro d'Italia means Lap of Italy. Vuelta a España means Lap of Spain.

Tour also means Journey or Touring. Doesn't only mean lap.

I'll bet the same assholes that use "of" instead of des also pronounce Acerbis like "a-sir-biss" and also go to a Mexican restaurant to order the Chicken "Fa-GITAS" and Quesa-Dillas...

To me saying Des Nations is like saying Loretta's. If someone refers to Loretta's as Loretta Lynn's amateur nationals, I just figure they ride hunting wheelers.

At the 2008 Redbull MXON at Donington I presented Dr SRB of the FIM a petition with hundreds of signatures to get the O changed back to D.

After enquiring with Youthstream and the FIM I was told the following-

Des was supposedly changed in order to make the event more appealing to a US audience. Someone, somewhere thought that Americans couldn't cope with or understand a foreign word. So I asked Redbull, they said it was an FIM decision. The FIM said the change was decided by Youthstream. And guess what? Youthstream claimed it was an FIM decision. So nobody was actually taking responsibility for this ridiculous dumbing down. Maybe they felt it was needed to get Monster on board?

'Motocross Des Nations' translate as 'Motocross of the Nations'. 'Motocross of Nations' is gramatically wrong and doesn't make sense. The FIM are based in Switzerland with French as their main language, hence why it was called Des in the first place.

The fact that so many people still refer to the event as the MXDN shows that it wasn't a great decision, one day it will change I hope. But probably not while Youthstream are in charge.

The original name has a lot more panache. The newer name sounds too pedestrian. It will always be Motocross des Nations in my book.

Change for the sake of change based on a ridiculous premise.

When they dumped the Trophy des Nations it ensured that Danny Chandler's feat will never be matched. To me it is the single greatest accomplishment in moto history. 1-1-1-1 Cool

And it’d cost nothing to change it back, but instant PR win for GL.

Holy shit. Are we serious?

The FIM is located in France. Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (International Motorcycling Federation). "Moto" is short for motocyclette, french for motorcycle. Cross for the cross country aspect of the original discipline. Motocross. Motocross des Nations is a french phrase. It just so happens that "Motocross" and "Nations" translate directly to English.

Jesus.

Really? French/Français.
And since France wasn't really good at mx back in the days, I would bet this "des" is coming from Belgium Smile (the mx root with england)
