Im just tryin to sort it out. If he wins every overall then he wins every race. Its not “perfect” but its winning every race. Thats still something that raaaaarely anyone does and eli probably wont either. Its crazy though that theres been a few in mx but not 1 in sx, shows the difference in technicality. Not rv, js, rc, rd, not mcgrath as far as I know. Says a lottt especially mcgrath not doing it may never be done.
I’d put McGrath’s 15 out of 16 SX wins in ‘96, against any “different” perfect National season. Sort that out.

I think winning a national overall is pretty badass in itself. 12-0 would be ridiculous.

Hey Eli, you were almost as good as RC and JS, but heres your highly coveted AMA snowflake award.
I didn't know they called it a "2nd tier perfect season award" for finishing with the most points, I thought they just called it a championship. But hey, you do you...

The scary part about RC going 24/0 twice then winning every overall in 05 is that Ricky retired in 07 doing a limited schedule, and he won every overall during that 6 round stretch as well.

Good point.

As someone alluded to, it’s kind of like the difference between a “no-hitter” and a “perfect game”.

I’d say that winning every overall would/should be referred to as an “undefeated series”, as moto wins are a component of the event, not individual events.

Winning every moto would/should be referred to as a “perfect series”.

Problem solved.

Considering the current field of riders (at least the quality of the top 5-6), this season in my mind is equally impressive as 24-0 if he can do it. RC and JS were simply incredible riders and to me their greatness wasn't defined by going 24-0 (it was for other reasons) because going 24-0 says more about the competition (or lack of) than it does the rider going 24-0. Tim Ferry in his prime wouldn't be in the top 5 in this field (no disrespect Tim). Other factors have to play into your favor to go 24-0 - mechanicals, weather (no crazy mud races), not getting caught in a first turn pile up, someone not cross jumping into your line taking you out, no cameraman running across the track distracting you from 200 yards away, bike not running out of gas, etc. So much can happen in a MX season to ruin it. In order to get to 24-0, there must be a WIDE discrepancy in talent from #1 to the rest. RC and JS were simply fantastic riders, I'm not trying to take anything away from their greatness or put ET3 on their level yet. I just don't use the vaunted 24-0 to define their greatness. To me, 24-0 says "weak field" as opposed to "great rider".

In this field, you have the following riders that could show elite speed in any moto on any weekend: Anderson (when healthy), Barcia, Tomac, Musquin, Roczen (once fully healthy), and Baggett. That's a solid 6 riders that could easily take any moto during a season. If Tomac can go 12-0, that's a totally badass accomplishment in my eyes.
The only rider on that list to show they can beat eli is musquin.

The others may give him fits during a moto but non can actually beat him right now. Unless he crashes or has a mechanical the only rider that is going to challenge him is musquin.

I agree 100% about the perfect season and defining ones career as well.

I think a perfect game in baseball should be the pitcher completing the game with 27 pitches. Smile

Marvin will win Washougal and Unadilla.
Someone else will probably win the round where he wraps it up...
So unfortunately he won’t be getting the 2nd Tier Perfect season award lol.
I think Eli wins the next 2 though..

I’m not an Eli fan but when I race Moto locally and friends ask how I did, I tell them my overall. As does everyone else I know. If I go 1 and 7 I don’t tell them I won 250A. That’s why it’s called an overall. 12 wins out of 12 is actually a perfect season.

If you went 1-3 and your competitor went 2-2, would you have won the overall?

I’ve never understood this thought process. At their time, those guys raced the absolute best of the best. Going 24-0 shows that nobody was in their league. They are racing the most premier US MX series, and couldn’t be touched. Did they have no competition because the competition was sub-par, or were they just insane good?

You mention that Tim ferry wouldn’t top 5 right now. No, he wouldn’t. Neither would any of those other guys who were battling for second place back then. But, you can do the same thing when looking back at the 2002-2004 era. Doug Henry won the championship in 1998 and wouldn’t have came close to RC in 02. Shit, the RC of 1999 wouldn’t have touched the RC in 2002.

Things change and the sport evolves. These guys consistently race the best of the best. 24-0 is incredible, and the only way it shows a lack of competition is because those dudes were light years ahead of anyone else.

So if you go 12-0 for event overalls, that means you are one bad mofo. If you go 24-0 in moto wins, then that means your competition sucks? Learn something new every day... Huh

Yes, thanks, which brings Ricky in with his 14 out of 16 in 2001. The gift that keeps on giving, the legend of RC.

Bingo and he led 370 out of the 382 laps that season as well and won a Moto by over a minute. Something RC did more than anyone.

A healthy Reed and Windham in 2004 is more competiton than what Eli has had so far this year. If Roczen were 100% that would be a different story but he's not and either is Baggett.

In my eyes the greatest single SX season is 2007 Stewart. What he did to Reed was criminal. 15-1 against him and that one loss against Reed was due to a crash and he lost Atalanta that year due to Reed dive bombing him and he still beat Reed. 13-3 on the year with RC winning twice and finishing second 5 times and Reed winning once but finishing third in every race that had RC in it as well.

RC really crushed those guys a lot on 2001 and MC in 96 but it's who Stewart did it too in 07 which makes me give it the nod over those other two all time seasons.

Hard to argue that one. Let's see McGrath '96 - 14-1, Carmichael '01 - 14-2, Stewart '07 - 15-1. That's darn near two National seasons worth of motos. 43-4 between those 3. Different and perfect at the same time.

Rc did 2 completely perfect season (02/04) first on a two stroke Honda then on the 4 stroke before leaving to suszuki, then his first year on suszuki (05)he had 22-24 moto wins and clinched every overall that year still. His first moto he lost in over 2 years was at south wick, he tried jumping to the bottom of a hill with sand rollers n came up short, two laps later in the same section he jumped over my shoulder 2 bumps further into the bottom of the hill riding like an absolute mad man. Then the moto he lost at unadilla, that one I think everyone knows about with him and bubba...
That South Wick story was so bad ass it actually made me laugh a bit. Thanks for sharing!

It all started with Eli going 24-0. That came and went real quick. Now 12-0 is the discussion and being compared to a 24-0 perfect season. Definitely not the same but amazing just the same. Only thing is there is 7 rounds to go. Not going to be easy with Marv out there.
