Wrong thread, but when it's race 2 and people think it's over, we have a problem.

A points system is defined by how many positions in any given race it takes to regain the series lead.

When you increase the gap for 1st, 2nd and 3rd you make it more difficult for anyone to reel them back in. If you can keep the positions needed still possible down to the last race, there is at least a chance.

http://www.promotocross.com/mx/series-points/2018

Let's take Roczen for example as a dark horse with a chance. In the current system he has more to overcome to get back in the hunt as he is 47 points (or a win and a 2nd) if no one else scored any points. He's F'd.

In an Olympic system, with a 6/16/3/8 he would have 33 points to ET3's 4. 29 positions apart with 20 point paying spots (there should be more). Still a long way, but if he won, and ET3 had 1 moto worse than 20th and another worse than 9th KR94's tied for the lead.
What happens when you miss a race? Automatic 40 point penalty?

Which doesn't make sense to me since JA is from Albuquerque which is about 5400'.
He lives in San Diego now, so there’s that...

aldon baker is not john tomac. john tomac himself has competed on the highest level possible in xc, downhill and road racing. nobody heard of aldon baker before RC hired him. I'm not saying baker is a rubbish trainer but john is one of the best athletes mointainbiking has ever seen. there is a huge carry-over onto eli. that's why he has the edge as soon as it get's tough in my opinion.

This is the reason Tomac is Tomac. When you live in the same house as one of the best mountain bikers in the world you are bound to pick up a few tricks on the way they train. I remember reading an interview a few years ago with Eli and he was saying that he had just beat his dad for the first time on a mountain bike.
yep, I learned more about fitness and diet importance in one year of racing mountain bikes than i did in racing expert moto for 15 years. I also grew up playing soccer and hockey. cycling and mtb training is insane at the expert level. The training knowledge JT has is invaluable.

Yep, DNS should probably be 41. Points for everyone on the gate, not just 20, in which case KR94 could overcome the deficit in one moto. The factories would cry too much unless you gave them a Mulligan Moto or 2 for their stars. 2 throwaway motos would ensure there were no fluke championship winners and keep things tight, and keep riders from having to be on the track in an unsafe situation.

I don't see how it would keep things closer without throw away motos (and that would never happen). Imagine Musquin misses 2 motos because he has a small injury. He gets 82 points? Tomac gets 2 or 3 total points, and now Musquin is in a 80 point hole in one weekend? Tomac could place 11th in the next 8 motos with Musquin having to win all 8 motos to close an 80 point gap. Game over.....
While the current system is a little bit more complicated, there is more of a chance to come back in my opinion if you miss a moto or have a bad finish. And what if you did not qualify in the top 40? Would that be the same 41 points per moto? My head hurts!

JohnnyDepp, you are promoting the "Dungey coasts into third and fourth for another championship" style of racing Stewart / Reed (all he has to do now is get sixth second paces in a row, etc.

I am a Kawasaki fan. What "we" have right now is awesome! Kawasaki and Tomac stepping on necks. Crunch time!

Without having throw away's, you would have to limit points to 20th. Regardless which system, a DNF is most likely a season killer.

What we have today is Tomac coasting to a safe finish, just like JA21 did in SX.

Keeping the points closer is a win for keeping a series competitive (without a playoff) no matter what color bike you ride.

I’m not sure it has to do so much with his training at altitude but I think he is willing to let it hang out a little bit more when the tracks start to get rough .

Which can also bite him as we’ve seen in the past.

staying under anaerobic threshhold has a gamechanging effect on one's ability to hang it out safely.

Bingo! Spend 3 hours pedaling a mtb up/down and around at 9000 feet if you are living at sea level and the difference is quite noticeable. Additionally growing up at elevation can give you anatomically larger lungs than normal.

I just bought 45 acres about 10 miles north of Cortez, tracks to come, in case anyone wants to come and train at 6800 feet.

Literally between the reservoirs. There is a state section to the North of Narraguinnep, then my piece. 10 shares of MVI, Montezuma county water tap and nice 100 foot high hill right through the middle that I can run the tracks up and down.

Sounds like off X, I know that area well, moved there from so cal in the early 90's to train, was there over 10 yrs and still have a house on the lake in Cortez that my parents live in. Super nice little town, Burger Boy has the best burgers.

Nailed it, X road it is. The idea is to put in a couple of prepped practice tracks, no races. Probably some sort of AirBnB/camping thing and option to demo bikes. I could see possibly selling some annual memberships, but I don't want to deal with a public track.

With the moto, mtb and a wake lake on one side, kiteboarding lake on the other, I don't think we will lack in fun. And as you know, Moab and all the desert around there are easily accessible.

mammoth track club (mammoth lakes, ca @ 8,000ft) was the go to spot for ryan hall and a lot of other very very fast olympic marathoners for a reason.

killian jornet is arguably the best mountain ultrarunner in the world, he grew up at 7,000/ft

most people don't realize that ethiopia (consistently home of the fastest marathoners) is high elevation (4,000-9000ft).

the list goes on

i spent a few weeks at mostly above 10,000ft in the sierras (fastpacking) and coming back to sea level in socal was amazing. after only that short of an acclimation period.

no way around it, elevation training is a huge advantage.

no doubt the FL training has advantages with the heat/humidity. i'm surprised oxygen deprivation sleep tents haven't made their way into the training programs there.
Who says that oxygen dep tents haven't already been on the mix? I have to imagine that almost any cycling trick ever is being used by aldon and oxygen dep tents definitely fall under that banner.

I think eli has a huge advantage by training at altitude. Hes just as fit as anderson and marv with way less oxygen. So when he goes back down to sea level to race his body has so much oxygen its probably similar to blood doping legitimately.

I might be way off but just my observation.

I hear this a lot from people that race at Mammoth at 8000 feet elevation. A lot of guys have problems with it guys that typically can handle the humidity but it's a whole different animal
