Is he the most un likely 450 supercross champion of all time? If we rewind the clock, to all not that long ago he was told to stay home and race when he feels ready. Was a good amateur rider, But no prodigy. He did win a regional title, but after a few years in the class. Thoughts?

Don't agree.
Former 250 champion, and that season showed him to have true grit. Racing every lap to checkers, winning a number of races on last lap.
He's on a great quality team KTM/Husky.
He has a great quality training program.
Has had a good podium presence.
He was not the number one favorite to win title at beginning of year, but certainly plausible.

If you want to go all the way back to the beginning, I think the most unlikely would be Jimmy Ellis in 1975 on the Can-Am, but SX was still more of a sideshow at that time. I would put McGrath in 1993 as less likely than Anderson this year also. If you are talking only 450 era, Dungey winning as a rookie in 2010 was also more unlikely.

Yes, I think Donnie Hansen is the most like Anderson, both were not rookies and probably considered threats to win races, but for sure not favorites to win the title.

I have to admit I would have never picked him as a SX Champion. I was way off. He appeared to me to be a very good rider that would have always been in the 3-7th places on average...consistently fast but not race winning fast. Glad to see I was wrong, I like the guys personality and riding style. Loved the way he was going balls out in the muck last week when he could have put the rudders out and rode for points

If you would have said a few years ago that Anderson would have a SX title before Tomac or Ken I wouldn't have believed it.

It’s been building up the whole time for him to win a championship. it’s no coinsedense he makes it through the entire series without injury. Staying healthy seems to be 50% of the battle. Personally as brutal as the season has been it could be one of the better championships won when the best in the world of sx racers get injured on the same tracks or equal playing field ? Does it make him better than the rest? One would have to believe so. so what he no the fasted every weekend and that doesn’t prove anything over an entire series.

If Anderson wins the title, it will be legit and earned, not a fluke, not an asterisk....the dude is crazy talented, driven, smart and probably the best guy to watch ride a motorcycle.

Anderson has been a race winner in the 450 class for a few years now. He’s always demonstrated that he’s very aggressive and competitive, and eventually finds his way to the front in every class he’s competed in since he was a kid. What turned me into a fan was A1 in 2016. Got a decent start and passed all the big names to take the win. Saw something special in him that night. He’s only improved since then. It’s insane how consistent he has been this year. Solid finishes every weekend. Probably saw how good that strategy was for Dungey and is now following in his footsteps. It’s gonna be a good showdown between Anderson, Tomac, and Roczen in 2019.

The speed was always there. The last few years he just couldn't put it together every weekend. Only flashes of brilliance.

I disagree with the OP. Anderson was a prodigy coming through the ranks and showed a lot of potential to be a star. He was fast when he turned pro, but made mistakes (like any rookie does). He got "benched", came back stronger than before, won a title, and immediately showed speed in the 450 class. I'm not surprised at all to see him winning this championship, however I'd be surprised if he was still leading the points if Tomac didn't crash at A1 and hurt his shoulder and Musquin crash at Houston and hurt his shoulder. Those are two big "What ifs" but I'm logical enough to say Anderson stayed on two wheels and stayed healthy and that's the biggest key to winning titles in this sport so good for him on riding aggressive but keeping it smooth.

Marvin and Eli each missed one race worth 26 points. Why are they behind 39 and 65, looks to me like Anderson is the best Supercross rider. Nobody gave him anything.

That's why only mention the 2 guys still racing with him..

We can also include RC in there as well.. I think he would still be the champ..

No. He’s earned this. He has been building his position for a couple years. He’s a great rider and he has great competition. I like to think Dungey would have been right there fighting for this too but no one can say that shit. And Arvee and RC. Geez. How far back can we go. Rick Johnson?

What about MC? "The King!" What did he do as an amateur? Then he busted out a premier-class SX title in his 1st year. Sure he won a couple regional SX titles.....but if you're going to point at the unlikelihood of JA winning a premier title by rewinding his career 5 years back from said point in time. Try rewinding McGrath's career 5 years back from his 1st title.
