Time goes by way too fast. Refresh my memory. Was the collision with Dungey this year, 2017? or was that 2016? Can't truly remember if he even lined up in 2017?

I'll always have respect for James, and all that he did while racing.

I'm shocked to hear that he wrote the AMA a letter to keep his number for 2018 because he supposedly plans on racing. Do you guys think he would actually write that letter and then never show up??? I don't think he'd be able to step out of his house to train without someone snapping a picture of him and sharing it so I can't imagine he is getting into shape and ready for A1.

Also, he has to know that his fans feel let down and I would think that he would be smart enough to not add fuel to the fire by writing a letter to the AMA when he knows it will go public and make his fans even more upset if he decides to not show up.

I've heard from people who may or may not know what they are talking about that even Red Bull is having a hard time getting ahold of him. Don't take that as a fact, just a rumor I've heard and I have no clue if there is any validation to that.

I can't believe no one has seen him out in public even at a local walmart or something. He seems to be as high profile as someone on the top 10 most wanted list so I would think if he was spotted out in public, someone would snap a picture and share it. I just can't imagine he's hiding in his house this whole time but odd to not hear anything even if he went to play a round of golf or something.

It is strange to see him completely vanish from not only the real world but on social media as well considering he was one to post pretty often in the past.

I'm totally not suggesting that it's a good idea or anyone should stalk him and get a photo, haha. I think that's a bit creepy but with the people out there who seem to be actively searching for him - I would think a photo would have been posted by now on or off the track.

Seems to me I read around here a while back a quote from James saying to the extent that when he retired, he'd just walk away and not say anything to anybody. I don't like it...but it sure seems like he's being true to his word. I would be shocked if he just "showed up" at A1 without any press release going forward. He's not the kind of guy to show up in a Sprinter with a bike a la Dean Wilson either...

You are way overestimating his fame to think that he can't go out of his house without someone snapping a pic and sharing it. Sure, James is/was huge in the world of moto, but people that know anything about moto are a tiny minority. I bet 9 times out of 10 that Dungey could walk into a random supermarket in the US and buy a box of his Wheaties (with his picture on the box) and nobody would have a clue who he is.

I can definitely see what you mean and I have to say I agree with what you are saying considering that our sport is so small. However, that doesn't answer the other part of my post that I guess wasn't really a question but more of a statement. I can't help but wonder what his thoughts are on writing a letter to the AMA if he doesn't plan on racing.
The part of my post i'm talking about is pasted below.

"Also, he has to know that his fans feel let down and I would think that he would be smart enough to not add fuel to the fire by writing a letter to the AMA when he knows it will go public and make his fans even more upset if he decides to not show up."

The fact that he wrote a letter to the AMA about keeping his number because he DOES plan on racing in 2018 is mind boggling to me if he actually has no plans on returning. It's as if he mentally wants to come back but physically doesn't want to put in the time or take any more risks - which is totally understandable but doesn't make sense when he gives his word to the AMA and essentially his fans, knowing that it would go public, that he plans on racing in 2018. To me, the sentence, "I plan on racing in 2018" means that he plans on attempting to race the entire series rather than just one race but maybe i'm looking too far into that part.

To sum it up, why write a letter to the AMA if he doesn't plan on returning which gives me hopes that he actually will return whether it's for one race or more. I'm taking his word one last time and I do believe we will see him line up again.

Thanks for the reply, always enjoy hearing your guys' thoughts on my thoughts!

If he's living in SoCal by the beach, it wouldn't be hard for him to not be seen. Nobody outside the MX would knows or gives a fuck who he is.

Heck, he could easily blend-in in Florida as well.

While the narcissism of fame has it's pull, some just get tired of it and find the peace of anonymity refreshing. I dont know if that's the case here. But it sure wouldn't surprise me.
I think our sport has the blessing of giving you the time in the spotlight which can be overwhelming when it comes to "fame" but at the same time, once you retire, you can more easily blend in since our sport is so small.

When I was in highschool, I was the only kid who raced, until I was a senior. At that time an incoming freshman was racing too but only local events. In college, I was surprised to meet someone who raced motocross and when I met him at a party and he noticed the MX shirt I was wearing, he came up to me and said he rode too. I pretty much jumped to conclusions and thought he probably had a bike at his grandpa's farm and rode it every once in awhile but to my surprise, he started talking about qualifying for Loretta's and from then on out we became really good friends.

I can count only on one hand the number of people I met in public or in a non-motocross environment who rides or knows anything about the sport.

While I haven't met too many people in public who know about the sport, I have met quite a few people who can say they've heard of Carmichael, Mcgrath and Stewart which made me think that eventually, someone would have spotted him.

I applaud the Stewart family for being quiet about what ever is going on,there is no contract that says he has to make announcement about retiring or returning to racing I'm sure whatever contracts James Stewart may have had have been fulfilled..The compound is private property and I'm sure there is some kind of airspace law that doesn't allow helicopters to just be hovering over his property! If he is planning to return to racing those that need to know are keeping quiet as well! If he is retired he has earned it and congratulations to him! Family first Always...

I would hope, but I doubt it. No one in this sport can keep a secret....look at how many times we have known about something ahead of time..RV & Dungey retirements, Kenny to Honda, Kenny to Suzuki, etc etc etc etc.

I have a good friend who works at one of the pharmaceuticals in Florida. He has a high profile athlete currently working on a masking agent for amphetamine based drugs.

He wouldn't provide details but said if this all works out, Toronto 2014 could well be repeated in 2018, MINUS the positive blood test. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This could be like Ben Johnson coming back and running a 9.45 clean. Great for the sport.

My guess.

Part time tour and into retirement.

That's why he sent a letter to keep the number 7.
