How do you know that he was letting Ryan by on purpose to just come back and make the hit on him? Maybe in his attempt to slow things up so everyone else could stay close and cause more commotion Ryan just got by him and Eli had to take the position back to make sure he controlled the tempo...

The whole "he could have done this or that" is because he could have. Zacko did it, Jason did it twice. I don't think you have much control over how hard someone hits you when you give them the chance to take you high. I don't think Eli wanted to crash Ryan, he wanted to rattle him and try to get him to make the mistake or have one of the other guys get close enough to cause commotion or pass, besides he wouldn't risk taking himself out too.

Maybe it would have been better if he just punted him that first time, but you all would still call him dirty, at least this way, at least in his mind (and many other racing fan minds) he raced clean, smart, he did what he had to do without being dirty.
Did we watch the same race? Eli slowed up so hard in some corners RD had to almost come to a complete stop, he had no choice but to go around. Eli did all he could, no fault in that. But your green tinted glasses are making you miss the big picture. Elis only chance was to bunch them up and stuff RD and hope for the best...

I mean, by the letter of the law, it did work and Dungey should be docked two positions. Dungey definitely gained an advantage while off the track. But that is never enforced, so I don't blame Dungey for doing it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this.

Toolmaker is right. He hit him about as hard as he could without getting in trouble. I don't blame him one bit though. It'd been hard not to punt his ass with that much on the line! Those were some very hard "block passes" Laughing Laughing

If a young Bob Hannah had been riding the green #3 on Saturday I'm pretty sure the result would have been much different.

Was Hannah dirty? Not really, just driven to win.

Then why did he have to repass someone three times when he clearly had a better pace?

Clearly that is a photo of a guy not trying to put someone on the ground ...

No vital or social media back then for everyone to go bonkers on and scream dirty riding. Everyone at the track was stoked on seeing some hard racing action, and went home and talked shit about it at the local track with their friends. There wasn't a bunch of people bored, sitting behind computers far far away crying about rough riding all week lol

Well one is a last ditch effort for a possible championship, seems reasonable. Isn't the first picture when he initially took the lead? Not exactly a repass (I could be thinking of a different time though). Also one of the times Ryan got by was when Tomac missed the quad, no saying that wasn't a genuine mistake on his part.
To think someone, especially as skilled on a bike as Tomac, couldn't take someone out in a bowl turn if they wanted is silly

He had to repass him because he was slowing the race down, Ryan passed him a few times, he had to stay out front, but also try to keep the guys close instead of run away, it was his best chance at Ryan making a very rare mistake. And those photos show a guy who could have gotten a hell of a lot closer, he could have pulled what JA21 did. Or what Zacko did. Ryan is a smart guy, he knows when to check up, Eli knows this and probably expected it, maybe he hoped that one time he wouldn't, but he wasn't going to t-bone him. He was aggressive but not Anderson/Zacko/BamBam aggressive.

So KTM can race backwards but not kawi....ohhhh ok lol. Who started it? Not saying Ryan or Eli agree with any of it. Maybe Ryan wanted Marv to win NJ?? Maybe Eli wanted to just ride out to the win in Vegas?? We aren't in these guys heads or inside the team hauler for meetings. I think we are all very lucky to have had as much excitement this year as we have had. I'm an Eli fan and I'm bummed but I feel as though in the end Ryan and Eli have respect for each other and understand this is a business.

Whatever happened to a good old fashioned brake check? Way better strategy than getting passed and doing the lightweight block passes.

If,If,If,

None of it happened, it's in the past and it really doesn't matter at this point "what if"

Dungey was a better rider this season, Eli was fast at times but not consistent enough to win the title.

There are no if's

Anyone else think Tomac tried to gap Dungey and just beat him by a massive margin , when he took the lead (which seems like classic Tomac M.O., and would have proved a far more significant point-that he was the fastest man all season-than trying to play games with him) and when he realized that Dungey was as fast as him and could potentially beat him straight up, he changed his strategy and tried to bunch everyone up and try beat him that way?

It just seems like right after taking the lead Tomac pulled an almost 4 second gap, then as Dungey started closing the gap laps after Tomac took the lead, Tomacs lap times dropped...Did he really miss that quad? Or triple it on purpose?

I don't really care either way...but man that was a fun race to watch...who knew supercoss could have to much "strategy"???

If Eli wanted to CLEAN OUT Dungey like the 16 did on the 17, he probably could have. Anyone who thinks he tried and failed due to Dungey's skill is an IDIOT.

He didn't because, like he said in the post race press conference, "at the end of the day I am a fair guy"

Can you imagine if he slowed up, let Dungey pass, then went all OZZY ON HIS ASS!!! Holy shit, the shit storm that would have occurred after that, the $million$ dollar bonus would not have been enuf compensation to how Eli would have been totally ostracized by 95% of the racing world.

He just did it to cause a "mistake" that he could not directly be blamed for. And if you watch the race again, there was at least 2 or 3 times where Dunge almost took himself out. I think it was Baggot that almost hit him at the beginning of a rhythm section too. If those things would have happened, then I think Eli could have gotten away with it unscathed.

I didnt really care who won. I think it worked out, and it was a great race. Not sure if I can remember 2 better main events EVER!!~!!

Unlike Savatgy, Dungey was ready for a block pass which is why Tomac's only option was a blatant take-out move. Like his rookie SX year, Tomac will learn from this and come back stronger next season, if not earlier when then outdoors start.

After LV the lesson is definitely don't be shy about taking out your competitor. That's where Eli failed. He definitely could have been more aggressive with Dungy. Hopefully lesson learned. Zach get's congratulated on his great race and Eli get's called dirty. Crazy.

That is a very good point. I kind of wondered the same thing, but the lap times show that Tomac was consistently getting faster. (Maybe not as much as he wanted?) Whatever prompted the slowdown, he dropped an average of 2.37 seconds (from his fastest lap of 1:05.22) for the rest of the race. (And that average is leaving out his 2 slowest laps in which he block passed Dungey.)

I'm cool with how both riders (Zach and Eli) handled their races...but I think there is a massive difference between how Eli rode and how Zach rode...Zach was racing forward, going as fast as he could...Eli was racing backwards, going slower than he could in an attempt to bunch everyone up, force Dungey to pass him so he could take him out (and tried it three times)...

The two aren't apples to apples...one racing forward...the other racing backwards.

Like I said, I'm cool with both moves...and I really loved the strategy at play in the 450 main...but I can also see how they are completely different.

How flippin' skilled on a bike would you have to be to control a 450 supercross race like that!! Unbelievable how talented these guys are. Dungey was kinda being a little bitch calling out the "cheap shots" but was probably just caught up in the moment as he got a mic stuffed in his face right after he got off the track. Awesome freaking race though and I think both Eli and Ryan can hold their heads up high after that season.
5/8/2017 2:34pm
I really don't see how you can call it dirty, no one ended up on the ground and that's not on accident. Dungey and Tomac put it behind them Saturday night and it's Monday and you guys are still crying?

Should say.. "I am a fair guy who is ok with a second place." ..... Because if he was serious about taking home the title he would have rode around in second until the last lap then parked the diesel in section 514, row z, seat 9... Still not a 100% chance of winning the title, but way better than running him high 3 times, which basically did nothing...

There seems to be a point of contention between Eli fans and anyone with eyes and even a little racing experience. I'm a fan of both riders so, here's my unbiased take on it. Those were not block passes. There was a good bit of contact in the last two attempts. Tomac's intent wasn't to just pass Dungey. He had to put him down and tried to but Dungey knew it was coming and stood his bike straight up each time. Now, if Eli had been successful, more power to him. Like RC said about Savatgy, Dungey put himself in that position. You don't take outside lines when you know someone wants to park you. Eli rode exactly like he should have. Dungey, in my opinion, subjected himself to Eli's attempts. He countered those attempts beautifully though. To the OP's initial question, DeCoster absolutely will pick Tomac for the team. As far as that goes, if Webb is ahead of Dungey in points when he makes the picks, he'll pick Webb.

that last attempt was extremely weak. He could of easy destroyed dungey in that turn if he wanted. Dungey even made it easy for him but got lucky tomac was nice. You should rewatch it he barely even touched him.
