Just wondering over the years of 250 cc and 450 racing. What is the least amount of wins that has resulted in taking the championship?

Thomas Stevens became the 1991 AMA Superbike champion and only won 1 of the seasons 8 races. He also finished off the podium at two races but still finished two points ahead of Scott Russell to become the champ. It was hardly a dominating performance.

Not after Saturday night.

Its kinda funny ( but not really ) the OP asked a good specific question and a special snowflake ( ctbale ) on here couldn't help but turn it into a Dungey bash.....Pinch

But yeah - 3 ( or 4 ) wins to take a Championship is nothing unbelievable. Like some have already said above - look at Tim Ferry.

Assuming Dungey wins this year he will be tied with RV at four each. If Dungey retires, Reed will be the only former champion still competing. Who will be the next guy to win multiple titles? Villo won four straight, but they are bridged by Dungey's first and last two. Dungey will join Mcgrath as the only riders who have won titles over an eight year span. Carmichael's championships spanned only six years. If Dungey won the title next year he would be the only guy to hold championships eight years apart, and have the longest championship winning career in Supercross history. Some pretty gaudy stats.

That's pretty damn impressive. You can't take anything away from RD. He is a true champion. How can you not RESPECT and ADMIRER him. One of the true greats of our sport

Didn't Albertyn win one without winning any races, or was that outdoors? Sorry if I'm totally off base with this, but it popped in my head.

After Dungey... who's next?

A very interesting question indeed.

Tomac? Anderson? Webb?

I have nothing against Dungey, but you need to be winning races to be a champion. 2nd-4th almost all season doesn't make him a true champion imo but thats just me. I don't see how you can win the title without winning hardly any races.

Steve Ramon won the MX1 world title in 2007 without any overall victories at all. In fact he only won 2 moto's of 30

I would guess that if healthy, Tomac will win one or two. If Roczen makes a complete recovery, he could do the same, but the next multi-title 450SX champ could be Forkner, or somebody else who is currently in the 250 ranks who has yet to reach their performance plateau. It seems as though Anderson and Seely may have seen theirs already. It could be Webb, but his transition has been lackluster thus far.

Do you guys like the idea that the guy with 3 wins is going to win the championship vs the guy that won 9?

Drop races would have corrected this. In the past two years the championship still goes to the guy with the most wins if you drop 1 or 2 races.

I want to reward risk, winning, and speed...not consistency. No one gets pumped about getting 2nd or 3rd...not fun to watch at all. BUT, watching Tomac work his way through the pack is a blast!

or....you know what...drop the damn championship all together. bump up cash payout for each race. Put a huge purse.

doing 2-3 main events will help dilute one bad race so that may be the fix...i'd prefer to see 2 15 min mains or something than 3 10s.

Jimmy Weinert (1976), Pierre Karsmakers (1974) and Jeff Ward (1985) all won only one race to win the championship. In 1985, 8 different riders won (most ever in a season) and the season had 11 races!
