Why doesn't our sport capitalize on selling replica rider jerseys like other sports do for their players?

Most fans are riders and have their own jersey and numbers? And it's the same gear the pro's wear and not a replica?

Those same people stand in line for hours for a signed poster. Don't tell me fans wouldn't buy them if they were available.

Yes, there are a lot of serious riders who are fans. But there are also just a lot of fans. The thing is, we aren't even offered the stuff other sports are.

This guy is right.

Our sport should embrace the echo-chamber and completely ignore the successful strategies used in other more successful sports.

I'm not trying to turn it into anything. I personally don't care for Nascar or football. I just want our sport to grow and be prosperous. Proper marketing is a huge part of that and an area where we are severely lacking.

Plus I just like collecting pro rider jerseys! And if you're not 12 it's kinda difficult to get one. Lol.

And the next thing you know, the riders will have four tires underneath them and will be racing in an oval.

NO. THANKS.

I like those Factory Yamaha and KTM jackets you see Webb, Reed, Dungey and Moosecan wearing this year. If they sold 'em I would buy 'em.

Yes there are... and the sport would love to turn those just fan folks into brand new bike buying/riding/racing ,full set of gear wearing, knee brace wearing, bike modding, energy drink drinking moto-enthusiasts Smile

I think that's what the teams concentrate on in regards to marketing.

And if Granny is also a fan she can sew/knit up her own ET3 & RD1 jerseys (kidding). Smile

Im weird i guess but i like the somewhat small, tight knit community of motocross where local tracks arent filled with everyday street trash making the sport look bad. But w/e man obviously no sport can survive without being a mega conglomerate

I know FELD doesn't allow teams/riders to sell merchandise in the pits, but does D.C. Allow it at the Nationals? I never went into the pits, but over in the food row, there was merchandise forsale (Muddy Creek). I bought an air filter & a few other things from a guy out of a trailer that had a crap load of random stuff.

My opinion is that by opening up the revenue steams for the teams/privateers, the community will be healthier as a whole.

Exactly, I won't buy any of that overpriced bullshit because I know where the money is going (or more importantly where it isn't going). That has to be the biggest joke in the entire show, a rider can't even sell his own fricken merchandise, give me a break man that's just wrong on so many levels. It would make so much sense to be able to buy a 722 shirt, or a 22 shirt, or any shirt for that matter. Even stickers can go a long way, kids love them and they can be sold at a decently low price to get the name out there.

One of our million dollar ideas we never did anything with was to make hats that were replicas of popular riders helmets, and put a plastic visor that's shaped like a helmet visor instead of the cloth covered cardboard bills.

That idea was right up there with Morey Doyle cars, colored tires, and diet pizza. All genius ideas (at the time anyway) Laughing Laughing

Most of the teasing is people wearing their own jersey to the races. Watching tv at home or going to the races in a jersey with your favorite rider is a huge missed opportunity. Even in my schoolboy thinking I'm the shit days I don't remember making fun of people in signed pro jerseys. Now you go to the races in your own or one of those Walmart looking ones feld was selling, me and my buddies would tear into you.

I'm sure some brands do replica jerseys that they give to their top dealers.

As far as fans being plastered in their favorite rider's jerseys...I've often seen people in here laughing at fans who show up at races in jerseys.
I don't understand the need to pull the "Cool Guy Beat-Down Shit-talk" on fans that show up in jerseys. I see it at all sorts of other pro-sports events.

when i was working for a nitro funny car team, we had two rigs, one for the car and one for merchandise. we sold a lot of t-shirts all weekend long at every track. but of course the team had to pay a fee to NHRA, it was however a small fee compared to what was sold. i can't remember but it might have even been a flat fee instead of a percentage of sales.

I was just thinking about this...kids and early teens would wear them I think. For sure there is a market for it. I would just get mine autographed and framed.

Go to a hockey game everyone has a player jersey on, go to a football game it's the same thing so on so on, go to a motocross race only the tools have a jersey on. Also when you can buy most riders race worn jerseys on eBay a couple times a year why would you buy a replica?

Riders arent allowed to sell stuff unless Feld takes their cut, so where privateer guys could make a few bucks by making stuff to help support them, the big man doesnt allow it.

This was the reason why Josh Hansen bailed on UK SX, because he wasnt allowed to sell his #100 beanies, without someone else getting a cut.

Personally i think it sucks, a few cool T Shirts to buy at the track for $25 isnt going to kill anyone.
This is what i remember as well. When you sign up for your license there used to be a policy stating that you could not sell merchandise.

The WSL (World Surf League) started selling replica jerseys and jersey-style t-shirts last year. While I wouldn't rock a rider's replica race jersey, I'd sure as shit wear a t-shirt with their name and number on the back, and team name on the front. They would sell a ton of these at the races.

The ET3 shirts that Eli sells and Malcolm's shirts look great, but like Hansen's stuff, you can only buy them online.
