'80 125 to be raced. Plan on re-doing this into an all white Mugen replica

Also building an '80 twin shock framed CR480, a '76-'78 CR125 with Simons Forks, Fox airs, Mugen cylinder/head/up-pipe, and a C&J framed 1979 XR500 Horsepower Factory replica bike. ALL will be raced

Having said that, I will be finishing up on RC250 and Type II RC125 replicas that will never see a speck of dirt in their lives!! LOL

Thank you, Here is another one, that I do not race. It is a "true" replica of Ake Jonsson's Maico that Karl Landrus built about 10 years ago. They actually went to Ake's shop in Europe to pull dimensions for making it a duplicate bike. Never been started, nor had fuel/oil since the build.

Very nice!

Great thread. Struggle with this dilemma myself.

Ride em' Dont hide em'!
They were built and designed to be raced. I do enjoy looking at them, but they look better with some paint rubbed off!!

Oldnslo: Dupont color code is B9262K / for powdercoating it's RAL3020

Haha thanks Stevie!

Newmann - I agree it looks way too much. I need to pull apart the forks and see if there's no negative springs in them. For the rear - maybe those are 17 3/4" shocks? Might need a neg spring in them too or decrease the shock length a bit..

If that is one of Karl's "replica" arms, I don't think he ever put as much bend in them as the original Fox arms. That could have you higher in the rear compared to the standard Fox setup. Might need shorter shocks or like you said, add top out springs to get the desired height. Those air shocks need top out springs to begin with. In the front, depending on what length travel forks you have, the Fox forks usually are sticking up through the top triple several inches. I made a rather stiff negative pressure spring for our 79 CR125 to get our forks down to 10 1/2 inches of travel. I cut up one of the pressure springs for them and run a set of .46 Race Tech springs and Emulators without any air. Good stuff. That 80 model of yours with the 79 125 tank looks just damn sexy...and lean.

Built this with intent of doing the Washougal vintage event. Other than a few smooth dry laps to set things up on my home track she's just become a garage / show queen. Until she talks to me to ride her she's just gawked at. Enjoy.

That nice Ake Maico with the long stinger just reminded me how loud these things were at the time. Didn't seem to notice it then, probably couldn't hear it now. And my wife wonders about my hearing loss...

I can relate.....can't hear nearly as well out of my right ear, as I can out of my left ear. To this day, I believe it is from my 1st dirt bike, a 1972 Yamaha LT2 MX 100, we ran the open expansion chambers back then and it used to hurt my ear. At 14, I didn't think about hearing loss, it just sounded cool.

Beautiful Maico and RM there guys!!

PK97 - nothing special - just used a primer and then the automotive paint as everything else. A primer that has good adhesion properties to plastic helps (adhesion promoter). A little bit of flex agent in the paint can help prevent future cracking.

The swingarm is the RC replica from KLP (Karl)

Newmann - as far as I and others can tell, the swingarm on my '80 Fox 250 is a genuine Fox

Bike is pretty stock: 1981 RM125X (I had one in 1981, and now I have one again.)

It looked too good to ride after the restoration.
(Cosmetically good, work in progress re "Race ready")

But ride it I do.
Moto X Fox gear.
"Classic Dirt June 2016" a great fun event in QLD Australia.

The front wheel is a RM400 unit with machined Aircraft Aluminum rings for support the spoke flange. Mimics the RN Factory units of which I have one. I know it's not period correct to the FOX open classer that Steve Wise ran but man does it stop.
Another question came up on the lack of a silencer. The pipe mounted is a Al Baker unit which has a internal silencer built into the tailpipe behind the number plate. Makes for a pipey powerband but clean intstall where the silencer isn;t in harms way.

I have been looking for a front wheel with a big hub, not conical so you have given me my answer. Not for an RM build.
Thought it was an Al Baker pipe, very cool. I to am building a fox/Steve wise replica, have all the key components.
Yours is great inspiration!

This one came to me in 3 milk crates and a cardboard box. 3 years and a ton of searching for correct pieces and now its done. It will never be ridden, but mainly because I built a few others to actually ride and race ,including the balls out Dg 100 Tripes class Suzuki in the background of the one picture. The Fox bike has the original Fox porting specs done, billet clamps and cable guides(super trick) , modified air box,Fox replica cone pipe, authentic Tony D Petty, ProTec chain tensioner ,Richter style billet silencer, found an NOS PDI head (not a perfect Fox match, but damn close) as well as the other things that made the Fox bikes so cool back in the day---Simons,Fox Airs and Thor arm.

Thanks sandman, Im going to post all the other builds when I get a little free time. Unfortunately on the DG100 and the super exotic DG125 all of my before and during pics were deleted .But the 1980 Hannah 250G I do have some nasty shots of the original heap. I can see both sides of the argument of riding ALL bikes like they were meant to be,but also to keep very special machines in pristine condition as well... Im torn, like a cheap pair of pants

Amazing bikes in this thread. swatdoc's CR125 is stunning. I don't have much experience with Maico's, but the Ake bike and BigMaico's Maico are just awesome. And dat OldPro RM125....it's has such a "privateer pro badass" look to it; about the only way I can describe it. It's what we all wanted our bikes to look like in the day, so mad props.

I had a lot of fun (though I may have lost a few brain cells from the fumes) zinc plating original bolts and applying yellow chromate for rust protection and "that look". Simple parts like footpeg mounting bolts, carb clamps, sprocket bolts (dark chromate on them), and the most challenging piece - the 27" long brake rod. I made a 30" pvc tube to hold the solution, zinc, and rod and was stoked when it actually worked; haha.

One more "non rider"....1974.5 Maico 501 GP Frame. Has to be one of the last of the 501s made. I have seen 1 that was a 1975 model, but most are earlier 70s models.

Never been fired, no gas, no oil since restoration. Added the Koni Poppy Body shocks for trick "era" look.

And another racer.....125 Husqvarna (Mini Mag) 250 Wheels (for the larger brakes), Circle F Pipe, 250 Forks, Aluminum Triple Clamps, Mikuni Carb, Excel Wheels. What a blast to ride!!!
