Ralph's job is to lead the broadcast into homes across America. It is not only us riders/racers that are watching, it is wives, children, friends of people that ride, etc. Ralph understands this and has to make sure what is communicated is not going over non riders heads, that the entire TV audience can understand what is happening and why it is happening. This is why he emphasizes some things that makes some of us cringe, like "bold statements" comments. I think Ralph always has done a phenomenal job balancing things out and leading the broadcast. We do have ex-professionals with him, RC and Emig. Ever notice how Ralph gently corrects Jeff when he gets a name wrong? Ever notice how Ralph asks RC to explain to the folks at home when he goes to deep about racing that common folk might not understand? That's also why they have a pit reporter to bring a human element to the tv folks at home. The broadcast team is excellent and they captured people like my wife and daughters who now watch the sport with me, who might not otherwise if it was only ex-pros commenting about the racing. I also think Weigant, Langston, and Georgia have followed suit and do a great job as well. It's TV entertainment that happens to be about a unique racing sport that needs to reach an increased audience. I've had Ralph's back for years and will continue to do so..

Ralph does a great job and he's one of us. The way people hate on him you would think he was on some BLM committee in charge of closing down riding areas.

These threads are so played out. They are up their with the 2t vs 4t and the Stewart brothers threads. Enough already.
Well said

10 years now I see this same thread pop up after the first race of the year, with the same comments.

Ralph is good at what he does, if he wasn't he wouldn't be doing it for so long.

I remember the last dealer show I went too, guess who was paid to be the host? You guessed it, Ralph. He's as bad in that forum as he is announcing races.
You don't really merit a response, but why would you hate a human because you don't like the way they perform a job? You are a serious tool. I don't hate you, but you are a douche.

How many SX announcers can you name ?
There have been more a few. Can we have somebody new ?
Ralph aint Dave DeSpain. Or Larry Huffman or even Larry Maiers.

Ralph's an old pro at the announcing game, there's no way he doesn't know what he's saying when he drops these kind of gems. Makes me laugh every time.

My only complaint isn't with the announcing team, it's with Feld/Monster not letting them acknowledge that there is an outdoor series. It might help the casual viewer understand that Kenny's riding this wave of confidence because he wrecked shop in the outdoors if Ralph and Jeff were actually allowed to talk about it.

From an announcing standpoint, the best race of the year is Daytona, because they don't seem to have as many restrictions since it's not a Feld/Monster race.

I think he does a great job. He's also a great guy when you get to talk to him. Here's an old photo of The GOAT, Ralph, and myself in Las vegas for our National Dealer meeting...when I used to work for Suzuki HQ Tongue

He's not a SX announcer. That would be someone like Lurch or the late Irv Braun who are there for the crowd at the stadium.

It's a lot easier to sound good on a taped broadcast that's shown weeks or months later then it is to be broadcast live with no time to edit what you say.

Larry Huffman or Larry Maiers was the in stadium announcer, not the television broadcast anchor.

That said, I would love to hear some of the "Huffmanisms" on the air, such as " he's tougher than a two dollar steak!!" or " Glover is on him like a bum on a baloney sandwich!!"

Those were fun days for sure.

Ralph is good. And to you who think he should be replaced by an ex pro like KDub etc, just stop. That would be a total shitshow. Like i have always said, Ralph need more help from the actual experts(Fro, RC).

Something that annoys me is the lack of analyzing the laptimes. In every other motorsport that is a key part of the race and broadcast, but not in SX. The best we get is Fro saying once or maybe twice that rider X just put in the fastest lap of the race, and that is it.

I seen't it ! I cracked up! I didn't see a replay but I thought for sure that just happened. And I remember the smile on her face. Oh god, who was the rider again?

The only thing wrong with Ralph is his choice of a favorite NFL team. Ralph is good at what he does, a pro rider would be terrible at play by play.

Folks should consider that many people watching and listening to the race are casual fans and not fanatics like us. I would suggest that Ralph, Jeff, and Jenny are just fine with them - not intimidating but helpful.

Plus, he is a Chico State grad!
Yeah your right, casual fans would not notice the amount of mistakes he makes.
"Last night he was talking about Josh Grant filling in for Weimer last season" ??? Huh- it was Hahn.
he asks dumb questions after the heat races also.
Jeff isn't much better.
I'd prefer Weege and Langston IMHO

I don't think people realize that Ralph's job is basically to dumb it down for the casual fan.
1/9/2017 2:58am
I'd rather Steve Matthes, JT and Ping.
Can we at least give it a trial run please lol

Honestly I don't have any experience with other commentators, as MX and SX is the only sport I watch with english speaking commentators but I believe Ralph is doing just fine. And he has his lines, like the one with someone working the backside of Webb. Had a good laugh!

Overall Ralph is great imo. It's a tough job and isn't as easy as it seems, but I find he and Jeff very likeable. There's little faults with it, of course. Nothing's perfect.

I barely pay attention to Ralph and Jeff. I'm busy watching the race. That said, I have no problem with the broadcast crew. Live TV can't be easy in such a dynamic environment. These threads are so played out.
1/9/2017 3:49am
Ralph seems like a class act for sure but there are things that's annoying. Like, for instance, when Dungey got into second place and he said something like: now that he's into second and has a clear track, do you think he can catch Kenny? I think so!

I was thinking to myself: Are we watching the same race?

Was doing my head in hard. How many times can he say "bold statement". Must have had a bet on with Emig.
