I would tell my friends that at one time James Stewart Jr. was the fastest man on the planet, and he gave me many great conversations driving home with my son after going to a race and witnessing a man do things I thought were impossible on a dirt motorcycle.
James Stewart Jr. gave so many thousands of people a moment to forget about their problems and have the sole focus on his drive to the front.
James Stewart Jr. helped break the color barrier in this sport, that was a great thing and very needed at the time.

If anyone see's James tell him a big thank you from me, I never forgot, why have so many others?
These racers can't race forever, James gave the sport so much, his issues are forgettable for me because he gave so much of himself to the sport.

If you look at pure speed then you know James was the bench mark.

Not to be a prick but the title of this thread is kind of retarded. "How do I explain James Stewart to a Newbie?" How the hell do you think you explain it? Explain it like it is. This is a passive aggressive way of saying "How do I explain why James Stewart is not out there riding?" Respectfully of course.....

Why would a new guy to the sport ask about Stewart? Unless you bring him up it seems there wouldn't be a discussion.

Simple explanation: an ex pro that retired!

Don't steer a possible new fan towards Stewart. I was brought into Moto by a friend of mine who is a huge nuthugger. I went to the first couple supercrosses wondering why the other guys bothered even showing up this was 2011. He still had flashes then but man he had me brainwashed into thinking he was god-like and I proceeded to watch hard work and dedication kick the shit out of lazy talent.

Not to be a prick either, but your reply is kind of retarded. Maybe I am also broaching the subject of why he isn't out there riding if he's the fastest guy on the planet (which would be the logical follow up question).

Yeah but how many freaking times do we have to go over this? It's been discussed ad nauseam. My reply is not retarded in any way shape or form. I can't believe that i'm the only one that feels this way.

I would say , used to be the best rider on the planet, but last few years has made too many excuses and is not at all focused and has embarrassed himself by entering races not prepared, has completely tarnished the legacy he once had.

Stupid reply and have some respect in 5 words, how ironic. Falling consistently and pulling off the track for blisters is amazing to watch? Years back, yeah he was amazing no doubt.

Seriously dude, stfu. You yourself said who cares what people think, so don't effing worry about what I think

This conversation is awkward, but the time always comes when you have to broach it. You can try something like this:

"Big James and Sonya loved each other very much, so they gave each other a special type of hug. Then little James came out of her belly."

Tiger Woods is the perfect comparison. More talent than anyone, won everything, but late part of career was filled with personal blunders (adderal PED) that left both mentally defeated

He is beyond a doubt the most talented rider to ever throw a leg over a bike. However, he relied on that talent too much and as the years passed injuries and bad decisions derailed his career. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

James could do things that would boggle the mind, from the rise of the Bubba Scrub to the Daytona Wall Jump. He also frequently crashed as a result of overconfidence and bad decision making.

Those saying he hasn't been relevant since 2009 seem to forget the season he had in 2014. I watched Toronto live. Admittedly Villopoto was sick, very sick, but James made the entire field look like B class riders at that race. It was insane how he had 3 sections where he had his own lines nobody else was hitting.

The worlds most talented rider finally ran out of talent.

To bring out a football reference, John Elway.

I'm a Chiefs fan so I hate the guy. He's always talked about as one of the greatest, but very few would put him as THE greatest. His stats, while great, aren't super eye popping when you take a closer look at them. Stewart's wins are eye popping, much like Elway's Super Bowl appearances. Neither one of them, for one reason or another, could really sustain excellent seasons consistently. However, if you were to tell me that every single rider in history is going to line up for one race and they're all going to ride perfect, I'd pick Stewart over anyone in history. Similarly, if you were to tell me every QB in NFL history is going to play one perfect game and then ask me which one I want, I'm taking Elway over anyone else in history. Now if you ask me who I want in an entire SX, MX, or NFL season or an entire SX, MX, or NFL career, then those answers are completely different.

These Michael Jordan, Tiger Wood, LeBron James comparisons are killing me.

I'm surprised I haven't heard Wayne Gretzgy, or Jesus mentioned yet.

I think we are misremembering how dominant James was. Dude only has two SX titles and we're comparing him to guys like Jordan...

If James is LeBron, how do you describe Jeremy McGrath?

If we are only talking on the track performance (which you are here), then I really like the Elway reference.

Huh?? LBJ is the uncontested best player in the NBA and has been for some time now. He is 31 and being compared to Michael Jordan, by the time he is 35 he will have passed him in almost every statistic most likely. He entered the sport when he was 18 and hasn't had a single bad year since. If you had to compare a major athlete to James I would honestly compare him to Tiger Woods. Absolute legend of his sport, did things that no one else could/will ever do again but for lack of a better term is "washed up". Still trying to compete but nowhere near where he was at one point.

Yup.
X3

-Hands down the most talented guy past or present on a supercross track

-Grew up winning so much he probably hated to lose more than anybody ever in the sport. Evidenced by the countless times he would jeopardize championships just to win races. Many people feel he would have racked up more titles if he would dial back the intensity at times to avoid crashing out of races. At one time his ratio for winning when he did not crash was something like 95% or greater.

ESPN did two great segments with him over the years.
