It will cost the employer exactly $550 before worker's comp insurance -- unless he decides to take on some other unposted benefit costs. Because "before taxes" means exactly that: it is gross, and the other associated payroll taxes come out of that $550.
In addition to the unemployment taxes, the employer must match the employees social security deductions. This amount is made up of two components, with different salary limits upon which the tax is based. The amount is generally 7.65%, for both the employee AND the employer.

Does this position mean 5 days a week at the track? I doubt it. Especially once the season starts, they ride on what, Monday Tuesday Thursday? I know they won't be riding on Friday because they will be flying to the venue. Does it say you have to travel with the team???

550 a week is peanuts but I could also see a kid dying to get this gig! I mean to a lot of kids this would be 550 a week to have fun!
You might be on to something here. I imagine Mon/Tues could be long days as you would need to get the bikes ready that night for the next day. If you aren't traveling then Fri/Sat/Sun might be easy days or off days. The all day real pit passes make things interesting if that is a perk.

If you read a bit below, I did state that the employer contribution to SS and mc would be $40 in CA.

I might be a little crazy, but I would do this job if I were still single. I think the experience would be well worth it. The money really doesn't matter all that much, when one can learn to work and be a part of a team. Although the hours are probably long and the money not much I am sure it would be a lot of fun and worth whatever work one has to do.

This. If I were trying to be someone in the industry and could afford it. I would take that job just so I could meet the right people and prove my worth.

How realistic is it to live in SoCal at under $500 a week? (ad says $550 BEFORE taxes, not after) Because even in Arkansas where the cost of living is cheap, $500 can be a little difficult to live off of, depending on how many bills you have.
It's probably fine if you happen to spending any free time you have charging for handys in parking lots, that would be some tax free income Grinning

I was part of a Team Tedder ride day earlier this year out at Milestone. I believe it was a random weekeday and there were several team techs w/ the rig. Everyone was in a good mood, they let me moto their bike, worked on it a bit and just treated me like i was one of their guys. It was pretty f'n rad, i was factory for the day!
They stood to make nothing from the day, i was there to capture helmet footage and rode along with Tedder. They let me cut a few solo moto's and i called it a day.
This is a low pressure gig, i've seen it first hand.

I take it you're not self employed. Besides workers comp, you have State and fed unemployment taxes and ssi, if Tedder is paying a guy 550 a week, 13.75 an hour, it cost Tedder at least 16-17 an hour.

Kids right out of high school stay on their parents medical plan if they have one, until 26. Probably dental too. Maybe on their car insurance for a discounted rate. It's not much different than a kid working at starbucks or bagging groceries.
The tough part is finding someone with 2 years of experience. At least the type of experience the Tedders are looking for.

That job is worth exactly what someone is willing to take to do it. You wouldn't take $550/wk, great, no one is forcing anyone to take the job. When I was 21 I might have done it for free for a year as long as I could travel with the team.

I left a close to six figure job to go wrench. I was 25 with a supportive girlfriend, a passion for helping people, and an insane love for MX.

It all started with Team Gus. Before I left my job I was buying them fuel, hundreds of dollars in food, and hotel rooms at the races I could attend. This was the 2014 season. At St. Louis 2014 I bought 13 hotel rooms for privateers.

Fast forward to December 2014 I sold everything and bought a one way ticket to Sacramento to meet up with Gus full time. Driving the rig, wrenching, the whole deal.

Anaheim 1 I worked for Bryce Klippel.

Thanks for the pic Guy bro! And for all of the memories.

From there on out I was with Deven Raper making night shows in the 450 class. Oh, and I was making $100/weekend.

Deven and I made two main events in 2015. Best feeing I have ever had other than my son being born.

One of the guys I was traveling with (pictured on the back of the bike) and I got picked up by the K1 Speed BWR team making $200 a weekend for the summer. Still driving the rig and wrenching. He is now working for the Rocky Mountain team.

One of the guys who was with Tedders making $550 a week in 2015 got picked up by RCH. The other mechanic got picked up by the Albertsons. The practice mechanic is now with TLD as a race mechanic.

My son was conceived at Red Bud 2015. Bad ass, I know. I found out at Unadilla and finished up the season and came home.

I spent a week at the Stewart compound before Daytona, a week at Trey's before Indiana, and traveled the country with some of the baddest dudes on dirt bikes. From that year I have more memories and stories than I could ever tell and the pictures and friendships to prove it.

You never know the story of the guy making $500/week. Go talk to some of those low paid mechanics. It will amaze you what they go through.

The Tedders organization is great.

Totally. At 18, I worked for a promoter and made nothing, even remotely, anywhere near minimum wage but I didn't care. I was stoked to be part of it. Pack of hot dogs, bag of buns, a barbecue, and whatever broken stakes were laying around to burn and I was set. Ah... Good times.

Fair Labor Standards Act refers to Hourly Min wage...This deals purely with salaried wages and minimums set in place for overtime pay to salaried employees...hourly wage employees already receive 1.5X for over 40 hrs...salaried did not

Awesome write up Jon, wish it was at the beginning of the thread.
My story is similar, but not in wrenching, just a different aspect.
I've paid my dues and now have a great job in the industry after "going for it"
The negative replies in this thread are from older employed guys making 60k+ a year.
This is a great job for a guy to get in and will be filled very fast if not filled already.

I know what is in the FLSA; I read it. The link you provided is a 2016 update to the FLSA and applies to executive, administrative, and professional positions which are exempt from overtime pay. Obviously, the Tedder position doesn't meet the criteria for EAP employees in the first place so the salary threshold is irrelevant. The Tedder position would still be exempt from overtime pay if it falls under the Motor Carriers Act as it supersedes the FLSA.

Are you guys implying the position can't be fulfilled as a private contractor?

I saw where someone-else stated that there were certain requirements that had to be fulfilled due to Tedder's other companies/operations? That appears to be wrong: The Team is a stand alone operation.

I look at this as an entry level position, just like starting in the "mailroom". Get your foot in the door, prove you have more value than others in a similar position by doing it better, and you will continually move up in the industry......or the experience will serve you well in whatever career path you eventually choose.

Some of you are looking at this like a individual with little experience should go directly to management level pay. It just doesn't work that way. The fact you cannot "live" off $550 per week is irrelevant. Minimum wage and/or entry level positions are not designed to pay mortgages/car payments/vacations etc. The guy or gal who ends up in this position will likely have several roommates in a small apartment, drive a very cheap car if they have one at all, and grow to love ramen noodles. I also believe they will love every minute as they begin their professional journey in the industry.

I'm only saying that the new wage threshold is for executive, administrative, and professional employees which are exempt from overtime pay.

It is highly doubtful that the position would qualify as an independent contractor though. This is what the IRS has to say about independent contractors:

"You are not an independent contractor if you perform services that can be controlled by an employer (what will be done and how it will be done). This applies even if you are given freedom of action. What matters is that the employer has the legal right to control the details of how the services are performed.
If an employer-employee relationship exists (regardless of what the relationship is called), you are not an independent contractor and your earnings are generally not subject to Self-Employment Tax."

There are certain criteria that you have to match to be a private contractor and be 1099 labor, but that is not what the add stated, the ad stated $550 per week salary and that would fall under the minimum salary requirement so if the person were to work over 40 hrs in any given week he would be due overtime pay even though he is salaried.
Now if Tedder has over 50 full time employees in his other businesses where those employees have health care he would have to give any full time employee health care regardless of what company they fall under as it is covered by common ownership even if it is a minority ownership position, but common ownership does not affect the minimum salary law.
