My local race track has a concrete start so I don't use one. I also suck so I'm not sure it would make a big difference anyway.

I don't know about using boot, but this is how I set mine. I have the type you push in, not the lever you pull up. I walk around the front of the bike and hold the brake lever. Standing to the side with the start hook I pull down and push the device in with my knee. I'm short, so I have to put the top of my boot at the bottom of the fork so my knee is at the button. It took me a few times to get it at first and other racers look at me crazy. Then when they get what i'm doing, and the fact that I can get it locked on 1st or 2nd try now, they are like, "I'll be dang." What sucks is when you get it hooked, then it unhooks when you start the bike, lol.
