what about Hakan Carlqvist?

a decent 500 rider.. and i mean stopping for a beer during a GP win.. has to rank up there

plus he just looked like he would stab and kill you if you ever brake checked him..

No doubt in my mind Magoo was the fastest and craziest mofo I've ever seen on a 500.

I grew up in the 80's so I remember that Ward, Bailey, Glover, Magoo, Lackey, Carlqvist and Malherbe could all ride the heck out of a 500.

I'd love to see RC in his prime on a 500. The way he rides a 450 wfo, me seems to think those skills may translate to the 500.

Thats the thing about "today" is taht all these riders riding 450's are basically riding open bikes. a 500 today would be conducive racing the 450 class. not that they will do it but the nationals would be so dam cool with 500's back. heck i would start going again to watch!!! last national i attended was 88 red bud 500. Smile

i remember watching ron lechein destroy everyone at washougal i think in 1990 or 1991. he made everyone look really bad. i know its only 1 race but all the top guys got good starts also

if i remember his shoulder was pretty beat up and he almost couldnt finish the races to win the championship

How do you choose between Magoo and Bailey? Weird thing is, they were completely opposite in style. Magoo was WFO before he even kicked the bike over, while Bailey rode that awesome works 500 like it was a velvet hammer. That guy was the king of smooth.

That has to be the 85 cause when you do that on the 84 it pokes a hole in the right side of the rear fender. Or is that when you loop it, I can,t remember.

Not quite in the same league as the aforementioned gentlemen but Stephen Gall from down under used to ride the ears off his 490 back in the day. 110+ MPH in the Finke desert race.

Honorable mentions go to Jeff Leisk, Darryl King and Joel Smets!

1 Racer that hasn't been mentioned is Rolf Tibblin. He raced the old 500 four strokes then the Husky 2 strokes and won championships, then came to the US and did the Baja type races and started up the School of MotoCross, which later became the Suzuki School of MotoCross. He was 1that really got MotoCross started in the US (MHO)

Bobby in Norcal it was like we were raciing a national every weekend!! Magoo, Shultz, Cantalupi , Richter . Wosick, Turner, Lesenski. Mckeena , Coupe, Berluti , Losh , Jodry, Rogers Watts . Waxam, Ryan And i seen YOU !! beat them ALL!! we had to ride against them every week and i was only 15 !! i was very happy when you all left for the nationals...lol...
