I didn't break my back, but I had a couple discs removed and C5-6-7 fused with hardware. Didn't work out as planned and I can't do the majority of the things I used to do. Even things things I took for granted like fishing, I now have to do in moderation. No way I could ride a dirtbike again, so I bought a Yamaha R6 and a Ninja 250 and started doing trackdays with my kid. I only do it once a month - and since it is divided into A/B/C groups, I ride 20 minutes at a time and get a 40 minute rest between sessions. It's not nearly as rough on the body as a day of riding MX. In a typical track day I'll do about 100 miles or so, which is about 60 laps. Plenty enough of a workout for a day of riding. I never thought I could replace the thrill of riding MX after my neck surgery, but I'm enjoying the sportbike trackdays much more than I enjoyed MX. And it is MUCH safer despite the fact that you're doing triple the speed of MX.

I read the title and thought the same thing.

So sorry for your injury.

I honestly hope you don't ride again.....by choice.

My Dad broke his back in 85' when I was a kid. We had a hospital bed in our house for like 6 weeks. He started racing again the next year. About 20 years ago he bought his first of many "this is my last bike." He's 62 now and still racing. ......you're not going anywhere.

now they are worried that I may have broken more than thought. Anyway, i was talking to my dad (who also races mx) and I realized that I broke my T11 and T8 which makes my mx number 118. Weird!!! Brit

itll be okay bro. on march 26th of 2011 i almost passed away from casing a 95 foot step up at a local track. after a hospital transfer they finally were able to pin point what happened. my t11 vertabre compressed my 12 exploded and fragmented throughout my back and my L1 cracked in three places. after a 10 hour operation i was able to stand/walk. i now have a plate 2 screws a titanium cage 2 rods and staples holding my blood vessels together. 3 days after surgery my doctor came in and said in about a years time if you want you can get back on the bike. i've never felt so relived. i was in a brace for 3 months. afther i got out of the brace i decided to have fun but be safe. ive got about 6 more months befor i can ride but its worth the wait. on the plus side i have a cool x ray to show off and a bad ass scar. and remember chicks dig scars hahaha

Broke my back in October 2010. Began riding after about 12 weeks post accident.

Even though I had medical insurance the medical bills are the worst part of it and have ruined me and my family financially.

Good luck.

I broke my L2 and coccyx. Drove an hour home after, unloaded my bike and then had the wife drive me to the ER. I have chronic back pain now but it is bearable and I will ride again. It has been two years since my injury and every day I am itching to ride more and more. I have even started flirting with the idea of getting a street bike just to get my ass back on two wheels.

If you don't have healthcare then your payin for all that.
What kind of figure roughly does that cost you guys a month? And does that cover the bill for an accident as I've often heard of guys still being out of pocket etc

I squashed T6 and T7 some years ago,3 weeks flat on my back in hospital then another week before going home, only allowed out of bed with a full brace for a while, back racing for a good few years but then in 2002 I did the job good and properSad

Brit....an injury is an injury! Any bone can be broken. I just had the worst wreck of my life about 6 years ago , and spent 16 day in Emanuel hospital. I was "Done" as well......until last summer! I took 5.5 years off....and didn't realize how much I missed it. YES....you will get your bumps , bruises and occasional broken bone......but if this sport was 100% safe....we wouldn't be doing it! Heal up , re-think your plans , and if you need to take a break from riding then do it. YOU WILL get the bug again.....once MX gets in the blood......you are in it for the long haul.
