Well , I have mixed feelings on the Go-Pro thing.

1st...I appreciate all their sponsorship money , which helps the sport I love dearly stay afloat , along with sponsoring riders.

BUT.....

2nd....I am a huge fan of the helmet cam videos on the races. 99.9% of the ones they put out are any where from 2mins to 5mins long. ( WTF??? ) I like the full moto videos , from the drop of the gate to the checkered flag. I've been begging for damn near 3yrs and hardly anything ever comes up!

I hope another camera outfits like 360 or Reflex , ect.....if they get into a spot where they are able to show full moto videos , then I'll back them way before I will go-pro.

who else here wants to see the FULL race videos? Hate this 2min highlight video bullshit.

It has something to do with tv rights that they can't do full sx races I do believe.
That is correct. None of that is GoPro's fault, nor does it depend on the GoPro exclusive contract. They have only a limited time of footage they can release.

Can anyone post the actual recording specs of a different helmet cam that has better quality (or the same) as a Hero4 for cheaper? As far as I know, the GoPro has the best specs but I'm willing to learn I'm wrong.

I bought the first GoPro to use as a teaching tool. I also bought the second one, which was horrible with battery life. Then they started to do the bullshit deal with competition in every sport, buying up all the exclusives and not allowing anyone else to get into racing. I quit right there. Screw them for their business model, and I I don't give a shit how much money they put into motocross or roadracing. Any company that tries to keep all other companies from being involved with racing will never see a dime of mine.

I have a 3+ Black edition. It's great!
I use it on my mountain bike, and for MX.
If I ever surf again or Scuba dive, I'll grab footage of that too.

The problem is: I'm not in the market for a new one. The one I have is good enough.

So,
They need to innovate and come out with new, cool products to expand their market.
And, now that there is some competition:
Lower the damn price!

I bought mine used. $500 is more than I could justify at the time for a toy.

If they were $200 new, I would have bought one 5 years earlier, then upgraded a time or 2 since.

Instead I spent $210 a year ago on a used one, and I'm now waiting for a compelling reason to upgrade.

That would be my strategy.

I have ideas for them. All they need to do is ask Smile .

Got the $130 Hero. Wanted one for years but no chance in hell that I pay hundreds for an action camera. video and sound quality are great IMO, very satisfied.

They still make one of the best products on the market but they are unbelievably expensive. Since the only way you can tell the difference in quality between GoPro and other brands like Contour is by staring at side by side footage on YouTube there really isn't any incentive to spend the extra dosh.

They should also update the shape, it's not exactly an aerodynamic design.

Sony or Minolta or some other camera brand has one very similar for 70 bucks.
I'm going to try one. I have a Hero 2? and a 3 maybe.

whats the latest? Hero 4 Silver and black? Whats the difference?
The ones for 70 film at 1080P and 30 fps so it cant be too bad.

Im sure go pro probably uses some camera oem optics. Anyone know whos?

I also think people were let down by the 4K 15fps or 4k30 on the black edition.
not at all looks great on my 5k iMac
I have a 5k iMac too but the fps is what I was referring too. The iPhone does 30 so the silver should have at least done that. Regardless 1080p 60 is what I prefer anyways. I'm getting a 4silver or 3 black in the spring.

They're gonna have to adjust to a competitive environment.

Some of you have made the point: pricing the product like you're a stand alone superior product ain't working no'mo...

But, they DO support it "after the sale" really, really well.

Another ~19% uptick today on what can be most associated with Danny Coster's move from Apple as one of their elite designers to GoPro.

The next one should at least shoot front and back at the same time.......and when you watch it should have the split screen option to watch both.

I'm about to pass this guy, now I can also see the guy I just passed

That would be pretty cool but I imagine the recording time would be cut in half with that ability.

Yeah but they also need some type of small clip on battery pack. Because those things won't last a moto even now

Battery life is also one of the deals they need to fix to be better

Any experience with action cams in the 100-125 euro/usd range? Like Denver, activeon or Salora?

I like the thought of having an action cam, but i'm not going to spend 230 euro on the first gopro model

I know one race promotoer that wears one for liability issues. He had battery issues but after getting some settings help from someone that knew the camera got it dialed in where it lasts over six hours.

Try the Replay Mini XD. I thought it was about $150. I have one...battery life is short, the view is narrower than a GoPro...but picture quality is good...and its TINY! About the size of my thumb.

I own a gopro 3 for it does it's job it probably isn't the latest and greatest but I have no need to upgrade.

If gopro wants to grow they need go the iPhone route and deliberately sell products that have poor battery life and software updates that destroy the performance of it's products when the latest and greatest comes out.

I would argue that angle would not work in the same way it does for apple products, specifically the iphone.

A lot of people really feel like they need their iphone and depend on it. If there is a flaw or negative they feel as though they need to live with it rather than dump it and buy something else.

I am a fan of the username by the way. A lot of dehydrated people out there.

I agree with you but it's just the only way they will sell, disposable technology or products sell far more than products that are of quality.

Gopro isn't doing "well" because people are probably just happy with the product they bought years ago...

Thanks for the complimentSmile

Have you guys checked out the Fly360 videos on YouTube? If you watch it on your phone and move the phone in different directions, the camera will move with you and will do a full 360 degrees of video. Pretty cool.

I love having a GoPro! I record most of my practice sessions and it let's me know just how slow I am Smile .
Seriously, it helps me figure out what I need to work on.
And when I get a little faster, I'll post it on Facebook and show my friends how awesome I am!

I also use it sometimes to record epic trails on my mountain bike.

BUT, I think $500 is a bit much. I waited probably 5 years from the time I first wanted one before pulling the trigger, and then I bought mine for the right price: $210 used.

If they drop the price, I believe they'd sell a lot of them.

I haven't tried moving my phone, but I can put my finger on the video and move it around while it's playing. Cool af

The problem with GoPro is that they don't innovate enough. They're upgrading their stuff in baby steps and that's just not enough for the average consumer to buy the new product because the old product they already own is almost as good.

I've been using the Contour cameras for a number of years now because they were a much lower profile. I can run them under my visor and not even know they are there. Plus the simplicity of use was a bonus for me. Slide the button forward and it turns on and records. Slide it back, stops recording and turns off.

I was recently overseas and the NEX had the hero 4 session on for $150. It had many of the same features of the Contour that I liked plus a few others the Contour didn't so I picked one up. It's even smaller than the Contour which is nice but the battery on the Contour is much better. I don't think Session will last for a full 150 min Hare Scramble but should be fine for Enduros as long as I only record the test sections. I still have the Contour for the longer recording sessions if required.

I'll know more once the race season starts.
