Everyone is different and addiction effects everyone differently. For example, my brother has a very addictive personality and can't just take something without becoming 100% into it and it leads to bad shit. I tend to be the opposite. The big difference might be that he spent several years on pain meds due to several knee surgeries, hand surgeries, wrist surgeries etc.....
or
That the team was in financial difficulties - MXMatti
looks like it was neither.

Addiction is tough, hope he gets the help he needs.
Yeah, we have freedom of speech and can search out and start digging up anything and everything on every rider, duh. So should we? Obviously you mind is too caught up in the yummy morsel of gossip rather than using a little discretion and common sense. You're right this is the new America, where we can do whatever we want, no one will tell us anything!
Yes, its news, duh. But if someone is genuinely concerned enough to search out gossip like this and go to the trouble to post it, why not dig a little deeper and find out how to send him some letters of encouragement, support, or general concern. Which would benefit him more?
Sounds hokey, right? Because that's clearly not what the OP had in mind.
But sammy took to stealin' when he got that empty feelin' for a hundred dollar habit without overtime,
And the gold rolled thru his veins like a thousand railroad trains and eased his mind in the hours that he chose
While the kids ran around wearin' other people's clothes.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes, and Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose,,,,,
That's a nice talent to have.
Tell me how YOU KNOW he is having a hard time?
Lot's of pure speculation on your part Sir.
Does he even get the "presumption of innocence"
I like my Lawyer.....most of the time.

Yes, providers are too quick to hand out opiods for pain. There are a variety of NSAID analgesics that can offer pain relief when combined with therapy and physical rehabilitation. Sometimes opiods are necessary. A lot of the time they aren't. There needs to be more oversight on the prescription and renewal of these drugs and much better follow up with patients.
That being said, there is a major component of personal responsibility here. Yes, some people have addictive personalities, clinical depression, anxiety, etc. Some people had a less than ideal upbringing. But at the end of the day, It is up to you to use your resources to manage your medical problems in a way that does not lead to your own destruction/addiction. It can be done. Unfortunately it's easier to take a pill or stab a vein than to pursue more proactive solutions to medical issues, pain, mental illness, etc.
One final point. Not sure if this is the case with Stroupe, not saying it's the case with all addicts in general. From my experience, a significant number of these people simply do not want to get sober. They'll go through the motions for the benefit of family and friends, or to get the courts and social workers off their back. As soon as that pressure lifts, they go right back to what got them in trouble.
Steer clear of Tramadol. They give it to you when the Vicodin becomes too much. It is a non-narcotic but read about it and search the Internet before taking it. It's a long term pain management pill and a major bitch to stop taking. Doctors don't know because they generally don't fuck themselves up.
In regards to Stroupe.....hopefully this will be his rock bottom and he will recover (if he even needs to recover.....how the hell would I know). These things happen to people so try not to be too harsh. He just a kid with an awesome talent. Great rider.

Guy's get hurt then they get hooked on pain pills like oxy's etc...
Then they move onto the evil H and other things...
It's actually quite common in general society - I've seen it often with people.
That's pretty much what happened to Healey also.
It took him some time to get back to normal, but he did it.
Best of luck to Austin.
Hopefully he gets through this and gets his life back to normal.
To say addiction is a choice and they should just man up is a completely false statement.
The fact of the matter is "choice" and "willpower" only go so far when you're talking about overcoming chemical reactions.
Very sensible points. Couldn't agree more.
Hope the kid can get a handle on his life and get healthy.
Oh, and going to rehab? That's just networking for addicts.
What I've seen of guys at his place in life is he has about 5 to 7 more years to go before quitting, the challenge being living till then.
About 5yrs ago I posted this thread. I lost one before it and one after. Makes me sick to my stomach.
