Savatgy shifter bent

Edited Date/Time 1/31/2016 6:04pm
Stuck in 1st or 2nd gear. Wow. They can ride in 1st and 2nd around the entire track ? I figured atleast 3rd!!! That's insane. Those bikes run.

I'd probably be riding around that track in first gear too.

how does that even happen with a billet shifter, and why is the cotter pin on the top with the foot peg pivot?

Do the 250 guys actually run works trans with 4 or 5's when they're 5 or 6's stock!? I thought only the big teams were re-gearing.. I don't know why you would take away any gear with the smaller displacement.... Wonder what ratios short uses......... So many questions.

Also curious about the footpeg pin being upside down, is that done on purpose for some reason?

Maybe it was warm from the motor which helped it bend what seems " so easily. " ?

I know that some teams have avoided using billet shifters, to avoid snapping the shift shaft. I have seen several sift shafts bend or snap off, because the shifter was stronger than the shift shaft.

As far as the foot peg pin being upside down. I'm guessing that either Savatgy or his mechanic had a situation in the past with a list cotter pin and they want to keep an eye on it. Catching a tough block or other bike, etc, could rip it off and possibly have it cause an issue ? Only speculating....

Few ideas.

Wouldn't catch on a tough block and compromise the pin?

Easier to keep an eye on?

Wouldn't rub in ruts and get compromised?

Bought a used race team EXCF from the french KTM importer and it was set up the same way.
The mechanic told me it avoided the pin getting damaged by ruts, roots and rocks.
Guess it's the same here (except por the roots and rocks).

I would never put pins in like that, its got more chance of damage facing forwards than it has the other way round.

And thats forgetting the effects of gravity , should the split pin break.

I do like to see how different guys do stuff, my favourite in the SM world is people who route the front brake line down the outside of the fork leg, so it cant rub on the disc, but can always get ripped off with contact.

Bear in mind that we change wheels for fun, its not exactly hard to keep on top of.

Here's a better view.

Joey said he wasn't sticking his hand anywhere near the sprocket.

Wicked! Better to be bent than to snap though, I suppose. Kinda crazy how many times it has happened in recent history.

The Hondas run steel shift levers for this very reason.

you know the last time I touched my shift lever with my hand to see how warm it is?

never.

Not once in 15 years of being on a dirtbike. I have no clue how warm it could be but metal is more malleable when warm....... making something like a snag bend it easier...
