I like the questions you ask and Christophe will no doubt get some top 5's by the time the championship is over.
Pourcel is very calculated.

If Christophe is not up front it is because he is purposely taking his time getting there.
Give the dude a chance. He hasn't raced US SX for 3 or 4 years.
Considering that he is doing awesome.
The only ones hitting the panic button are uninformed fans.
Nice interview Dunes.
So the guy has been out of sx for 5(!!!) years and is as fast as anyone in one lap.
Just think about that for a moment. Every time someone gets injured and is out for a year and the results aren't the best early in the season people always talk about that the dude needs time and races under the belt. CP377 is doing that but he has been out for 5 years, that is almost like retiring.
I'm so fed up with people who talk about "oh, CP does a CP yet again" after the first 3 rounds. Even Matthes is doing that in the RacerX podcasts(no not surprising)
I agree with you. Give CP a chance to get used to the tight racing and high intensity. He will probably have podiums by the end of the season if he stays healthy!
Didn't he say that he would start doing well by High Point last year? Well guess what, he went 3-5 for 4th overall and 2-3 in Budds Creek for 2nd overall.
Personally, I think the industry lost out big time when CP wasn't signed by a factory team in '11. In my eyes, he's the most naturally gifted rider out there. What's crazy is I'm not sure he is very confident with his SX skills, or he just downplays them to lower expectations. When I asked him about racing SX again at Washougal during the press conference, he said, "Yeah. I don’t know. Everybody says I’m so good at Supercross, but I don’t feel like I’m that good. It’s just a strange feeling".
It's weird, because the kid was incredibly dominant and I'm pretty sure it's unprecedented to see a back-to-back dominant 250SX Champ (not to mention that he nearly won back-to-back 250MX Championships)not signed by a factory team the next year. I talked to CP about that last year (not with a recorder, but while he was watching practice at the Monster Cup) and he blames himself more than anyone and does have regrets. To paraphrase he said, mentally all his eggs were in one basket hoping for the Factory Kawsaki ride and when he didn't get it, he didn't want to ride anywhere else.
Bottom line with CP377, haters are going to hate and he's going to just do what he's comfortable with. Like the haters, I too find it confusing at times and like the lovers, I too know how good he's capable of being if he says, "Fuck it" and just pulls the pin. I hope that time comes, but either way he's incredible to watch ride.
Pit Row
Anyway, back to old CP and this panic button thing. Let's see. Anaheim 2, he gets terrible gate and it appears he's not trying, yet I believe he got 12th. Good or bad is up to discussion, but I think La Frenchie is just smarter than the average racer. He had a crappy gate and knew he wouldn't get the start. He's new to SX (hasn't raced in ages) and he already said he'll be ready at round 7.
With all said, he knows he's not winning the series so why pull a Canard, Tickle, Bogle, Barcia, etc and get hurt. He's just waiting. We have at least 4 other guys that will rag doll themselves. I say he'll end the series with a good standing just by finishing the series. He's just smarter than everyone else.
Thanks for this interview about CP, I enjoyed it very much. I just want to see him building momentum, he is a rookie in SX450 but also in SX.
(Stats: 24 SX US in total? Even Anderson who was rookie last year may have 60-80 starts in total? CP also raced 6 times on the West his whole life, with 3 races in 2007. Got 76% podium rate in 250? 57% win rate in 250? 67% injury free/complete season in SX? 10% crash rate? 90% top3 quali time? Did Bercy only 3 times, with a 33% win rate?).
Those flashing of brillance in practice are actually not expected in SX and with this field. He must just keep learning, then once he is very confortable he should start to race with the top 8, top 10. Step by step, the competitors are not amateurs !
And finished 13th, 12th and 12th in the mains?
He's a racer, he has done it for ages.
Pourcel is the other way round, he has the pace but hasn't raced supercross in several years, plus the field is stronger then ever plus he does it all the very first time on the big bike...
He's ahead of Wil Hahn in the standings and not far behind Musquin in 12 place o/a. Is he really doing THAT bad?
And he's not getting injured, he will most probably be there racing till vegas (like outdoors where he finished a 5th overall as the top husky guy)
