From the home page Day In The Dirt link. Yes, I found the home page after all these years...Tongue

"KTM and Yamaha get it. But we really need a 125 (that can be boosted to 144 or 150) from all the manufacturers. It's currently the missing link of the motocross world."

Even people that don't know anything about dirt bikes ask why 4 strokes sound like shit.

Why do we need a 2 stroke from all the manufacturers? It's not like the KTMs, Huskys and Yamaha 2 stroke bikes are flying off the shelves. Well the KTM and Husqvarna enduro and XC bikes are very popular, but the demand of brand new bikes (please remember this, brand new) isn't high enough.

There are literally 3 brand new 2 strokes on the market. The KTM 125, Husky 125 and KTM 150. How many of the 2 stroke lovers have bought any of these 3 bikes? Or a Yamaha(an old bike, i'm not saying that the bike is bad. Only old)?

The 2016 KTM/Huskys are lighter and faster than ever. Still i don't see any 20+ pages about them and big discussions about those bikes. I took a look at the member bike checks, there is 14 2015/2016 KTM 2 strokes and 8 2015/2016 Yamaha 2 strokes.

2 strokes are a part of our sport, but the demand of brand new 2 strokes are clearly not high enough.

I actually did watch it the day they released it.

And i knew i would get a comment like this.

I'm a fan of 2 strokes, hell go and take a look at my bike checks. I have an RM 250 2007. But that proves my point. it's an 2007. The demand of brand new 2 strokes(big bikes) is not high enough.

I would buy a brand spanking new KX-125 or RM-125, if they looked anything like the photoshop job going around..

Love the new YZ but, I've had too many YZ's and like a different color..

So it should be the latest and greatest? Would you buy one if it came with the price tag associated with latest and greatest?

Two-strokes definitely have their place. But I was also talking to one current fast pro this weekend (think top ten), who said the 250 he was on was slow, and that 250 two-strokes would never be competitive against 450s.

well , let's look at it this way. Is there a ton more 2 strokes out on the track today compared to let's say...5yrs ago?

I would say there is about 10X more 2 strokes at the tracks I visit compared to 5yrs ago. The thing is , they are mostly Yamaha's and KTM's , because the other 3 big manif's don't produce one. We would see plenty more out there if we had a newer 2 stroke made from these three , stuck inside a new gen chassis.

And that isn't just the tone here on vital , that is what's happening at most tracks now days. At least up here it is.

And yet, that's how the AMA wrote the rule back in the day. At that point, it was considered fair. I think they were slow to react to changing it, and that's among the reasons why we're where we're at now.

I love my smokers but I also remember there being left over models in manufacturers warehouses for years.

KTM/Husky & Yamaha sell a crap load of 250's and 300's. 125's are probably 25% of total 250 sales? IF Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki thought they could cash in on this market and not end up with leftovers in the whse they would.

I've never purchased a new two stroke, so I'm unclear as to how this works. Do the dealerships include the tin-foil hats with the purchase or are you guys buying them aftermarket? Some of you seem to have especially sophisticated tin-foil hats - are you modding them or just buying them that way? I would love to know how to keep those big, bad, manufacturers (ESPECIALLY Honda!) out of my head and do whatever I can to keep them from absolutely destroying the sport!

You're talking at the pro level. I look at 125s as a missing link in rider development. It also used to be a staple at local tracks. It could/should be again.

This!!!! But (and it is a big ass but) comparing bikes is where I have my problem it is generally accepted that a modern 250f is equivalent to a 250 2t - yes/no?

Going by that reasoning KIDS that are moving up jump from 85 to 250 2t!!! Now that is just freakin insane yes/no? Before anybody asks yes I did do that with son many years ago but he was given the choice (yes I do regret it!! And no he doesn't ride anymore.

The 125 2t is the stepping stone both physically & mentally to allow KIDS to develop personally and moto skill wise (IMO , flame on)

I for one make my own. I don't trust the tin foil hat manufacturers; they may be in league with the 4-stroke conspiracy and I wouldn't want to compromise my clear thinking abilities.

I started a drag strip and we allow single cylinder diesels, but you can run any gasoline engine configuration (v6, v8, v12, straight 6, whatever). We determined that people hate diesels and they are slow at drag racing compared to a gasoline engine! Silly Silly Silly

No 125 class?

Have you forgotten about the EMX125 class? The EMX300 class?

There is a place for 2 strokes and there will always be a place for them. But is there a place for brand new 2 strokes from 6 manufacturers? No i don't think so.

This is what rosebud441 wrote earlier in the thread: "I would buy a brand spanking new KX-125 or RM-125, if they looked anything like the photoshop job going around..

That proves my point. There are 2 brand new 125s that are freaking light and fast but he doesn't even mention them.

Agreed. Kawasaki Canada's most requested off-road bike from dealers for a few years has been a 125/150. Parents aren't too stoked about their kids stepping off an 85 and straight to a 250F. I believe local track participants across North America outnumber pro riders (hence a viable market)

What he just said is a skewed perception based on the stagnation of the two-stroke market. YZ125s aren't selling because if you purchased a 2010, you're not going to purchase an 11, or a 12, or a 13.. because it's the same bike.

If the manufactures placed the same emphasis and marketing tactics on 125s as they do 250Fs, they would sell similarly, if not better. The majority of the offroad cycle market is for "play".

You absolutely cannot sit here and talk about the sales of something that doesn't really exist, which is a fair market for two-strokes.

If Kawasaki put a 10 year development freeze on the KX250F right now, from 2016-2025 model, how many 2025 models would they sell? How ridiculous would it sound when someone said in 2025 "meh... the KX250F just doesnt sell, so theres no demand for it"

When any four-stroke back in the day was a warmed-over trail bike in a current chassis? Before Yamaha came out with their 400 works bike? Probably lots of people.

Used two stroke market is healthy for ktms and yz. I could not imagine spending 7gs on a new 2 stroke. I would love to know the profit margin on a yz250 or ktm250. If they sold for 4 grand. I imagine sales would be significantly higher. 7 grand for old tech or a grand more and get more bike.

And yet, that's how the AMA wrote the rule back in the day. At that point, it was considered fair. I think they were slow to react to changing it, and that's among the reasons why we're where we're at now.

The crooks and thieves at the AMA considered it fair. You do remember there were those there who were busy stealing money from the members at the time. The rest of us knew that a high revving double displacement engine would be the death of the smaller 2 stroke. It wasn't fair then and still isn't today. But the AMA, one of them anyway, will be quick to point out that it is all up to Davey Coombs and MX Sports to make any changes today.
