What is the best 144 kit for a YZ125?

My best friend has not raced since he was 12 years old or ridden an MX bike. He wanted to get back into it at 39 years old so I found him a clean 2000 YZ125 for $1500. The bike is imaculate looking for it's age except for a rear tire that had been ridden on pavement. I replaced the tires and pulled the head off and noticed a big scratch on the cylinder. I told him if was going to race he might as well get a 144 kit. He wants to spend around $500 and wants to keep the stock cylinder as a spare. I know Athena makes the whole kit but what about Eric Gorr? Will he sell you the whole kit and how much is it? Is there anyone else who sells a 144 kit that is better or at a better price? Again, he does not want to send his stock cylinder off.

Bolt on is a waste, send it to Eric gorr, no question. I have one and it is awesome. If he isn't willing to ship to have it done right, don't waste the money. The head and port work is what mikes them rip. Waaaay too many people have done the bolt on kits and posted online about how worthless they are to even consider it.

X2 for Gorr, may take a month turn around, but worth the wait. Athena's yz144 kit tend to have head leak issues. Also the yz125 (at least the 05 up) need the cases trimmed for the crank clearance when doing a big bore.

FYI, all 125's need case clearance for a 58.5mm piston's skirt to clear. Without porting the Athena or standard bore and replate will have a more narrow exhaust port and a rear boost port as much as 5.5mm lower than the stock boost port. No bueno!

I would get a 139cc kit from Max Power, it feels less torquey and revs up faster than a 144cc with no case work needed.

I was looking into this, it starts out at 500 but I am not sure if that is for the YZs since they do need some extra work. A month turn around isnt bad for the work you get done. I have read nothing but good things about Gorrs work, he has good customer service and offers top end kits that are tailored to his work.

I have an '04 I want to get done, if your friend sends his out to get done let us know how he likes it.

Seems he's a amazing mechanic, but not a business man? I think him moving to another company, will help him with logistics, mail service, while he can concentrate on doing cylinders...

I bought an Athena kit for a yz125 . The first time the head gasket blew at 4 hrs . I tried to order a replacement they were on backorder for 2 months . I finally got the updated (new style) head gasket and it also blew at th 4-5 hour mark . After that i went back to stock . After the first one blew i even took it to a machine shop the make sure it wasn't warped and had the surfaces mated and the squish set to the tolerances in the athena install guide . I will never buy athena again .

BPM Racing Engines is in the process of moving to a location in central Alabama by the 1st of the year. Bobby Barr at Barr's Competition in Shelby NC did ours. Thing is NASTY! He used to build Damon Bradshaw and Ricky C.'s stuff back in the 2 stroke days. Had a couple of other 144 owners ride it and they were shocked... Mr. Barr knows his chit!

I just got a 05 YZ 125 that's got a 144 motor on it and it's blowed up when I fix it how long can it go till i gotta put a piston in it again

Should be the same service interval that is used with the stock 124cc, unless they went crazy with the build.
